  • Our circa 2020 6hp Mercury 4 stroke outboard has been giving us problems lately. Stalling, sputtering and loss of power have been the symptoms. Follow along as we perform some maintenance, take apart the carburetor, clean the jets with carb cleaner spray, reassemble and test drive.
Our motor has an aftermarket propeller with only a 6” pitch compared to the stock 8” pitch propeller. We changed that to help get on plane with 2 people in the dinghy. You lose some top end speed by lowering the pitch, but it help us get on plane at lower speeds. Watch our prop swap video for more info on that. - • Mercury Outboard Prop ...

Hi and thanks, Adventures of Happy Ours for sharing. Embarrassed to say I don't even open my car's hood. You sound like a mechanic whom I have to hire when I need help. 😂😂😅😅Very instructive. 😎

I had an issue with my outboard. The mechanic I spoke with recommended Mercury Marine Quickleen first before taking anything apart. This was like liquid gold.

We’ll be in Croton July 4 weekend for our raft up before I head South. If you are around, come by and say hi!

Unless you have a rebuild kit, you shouldn't disassemble the housing.
If the engine has less than 100 hrs on it or less than couple yrs old then it prolly be ok to but many times, the o rings and gaskets tear and you need to replace them.
You can soak them in kerosene and blow them off and clean out best you can after soaking but... that's it.
Carb cleaner is extremely harsh on rubbers and also plastics so it's good to tear them down before using it.
    Again need a rebuild kit.

The only rubber o ring was the float bowl seal. It’s also a newer motor so everything in good shape. Just bad gas. Ethanol, dirt - who knows. Running great now. I keep a screwdriver aboard now to drain float bowl when it starts acting up.

I notice you added a hydrofoil. Did It make much of a difference to the dinghy ride?

Before adding the hydrofoil, the prop would cavitate under certain conditions. With the hydrofoil, no cavitation and the boat got up on plane much quicker.
