Babymetal and their writers have an incredible partnership.. the Kami band probably didn't need to be coached at all.. I think the girls went through a lot of training and hours and hours of practice being so young.. but damn if it didn't pay off.. when they're on stage it's like magic and that's strictly from being great artist.. I've been waiting on some original stuff from em.. maybe after the contract runs out.. lol

This is a rare performance of this song. Su was performing it before the first album was released and it could have been included, but she was not satisfied that she was doing it justice as she felt she was concentrating most on getting the lyrics and tune right, she didn't feel she was expressing the emotion well enough. It was only when, at one performance, she saw some of the audience crying that she realised she could move people emotionally and only then was the song was included in the second album.
Leda Cygnus of the Kami Band wrote the guitar arrangements, this was the first time he was not there to play it. Instead Miko Fujioka was making his very last appearance with Babymetal, he tragically died just a couple of weeks later ... there is a line in the song which says "We shall never meet again, but I want not to forget you forever." At that moment in this video the camera focuses on Mikio.
There was an introductory video played just before Su sang this referencing the Atom bomb and the acid rain that fell on Hiroshima. This is a subject Su feels very strongly about as it is her home town, so maybe that was why she was also so emotional in this performance. This was a special occasion as she made her triumphant return to her home town for the first time with Babymetal for her 20th birthday.

'No Rain, No Rainbow' has only been performed five times (including both of the 'Legend S' concerts in Hiroshima), and never outside of Japan.
It is always a crowd favorite and a special event, whenever it is performed live.
The 'Legend S' video is especially meaningful when you realize that they have a close-up on Mikio Fujioka (RIP) during this part of the song:
"Nidoto ae-nai kedo, wasure-naide itai yo."
(We shall never meet again, but I want not to forget you forever.)
These two concerts on back-to-back nights were the first BABYMETAL performances ever in Hiroshima, Su's birthplace and home prefecture.

"It looks like she's about to cry" - I can't pretend to know what Su was thinking during this but it's one of their more emotional songs and this show was the first time they preformed without Yui (They said that she was sick at the time but she never performed with Babymetal again after this). The entire show was a bit surreal as it was one of their bigger budget shows but all the choreography was kept the same so they were doing routines designed for 3 people with only the two on stage. Mikio died a month later. It was an extremely rough time for Babymetal and their fans.

@@CHRISCONTEPSS To go even deeper into your comment: Su has very strong feelings regarding the bombing of Hiroshima at the end of WWII and this song is (as I have heard from others) partly about that in some way, speaking of the irradiated acid rain that fell on the victims after the bombing.

@@mr.osclasses5054 Would not at all be surprised by this. I have heard about similar expression hiding behind "Gimmie Chocolate" . .Apparently when US GI's went to visit Hiroshima after the war (to verify the destruction, catalogue the damage etc) they would have chocolate bars with them. The orphan children roaming around would ask them for Chocolate. The rub is it became the first words in English Japanese kids would learn. Weather this or the sentiment you mentioned about NRNR were intentional is only known by the lyricists and the fox god. Either way an artist interprets the composition with their own soul. . .and this is beautiful. CC

@@CHRISCONTEPSS That is interesting. I had not heard about that for GC, but I can absolutely see that being the case as there were a lot of GI's who mentioned that when recalling their time either in Europe or the Pacific later in life, and you can see that happening at least once (in Europe) in the miniseries, Band of Brothers when one gives chocolate to a little Dutch Boy.
I love teaching and discussing those little human moments with my students. They learn to appreciate things more when it is put on the level of just regular people, not the higher-up's and military leaders, and now that I've discovered BABYMETAL and this song, I may try to incorporate it into a lesson about the end of the war.
That said, I agree 100%. While it is a bit vague, I believe others have read interviews done by Su where she discusses the bombing and/or how (if) this song is part of that. It is an incredibly beautiful song no matter how you look at it.

Sad to think that was the lead guitarist, Mikio's, last filmed performance as he fell off an observation tower about 10 days later, on New Years Eve, while enjoying his hobby of astronomy, and died the following week. The lyrics are heartbreaking (which accounts for Su's tears). Here's the last bit, after the guitar solo -

I cried when I heard that he passed away, and it surprised me cause I never cried like this for the death of a "public figure" before that. It really wrecked me and it's still kinda hard to watch videos of him, especially on this song which is so beautiful... Intro for this song at Legend S.
    The bright beam of light
that wiped all light from the world
also ceased people's light of hope.
    The skies turned dark
and endless rain fell upon the people
who had lost all their light and hope.
    But endless rain doesn't exist
and the people hope of black skies to clear out
so the heavens can restore the light that had been lost
They hope to discover that there's happiness at the end of sorrow
and they pray for light of hope to return to them.
This show was at Hiroshima Green Arena, near the Hiroshima Ground Zero. It is Suzuka hometown, and this live show was made in honor to her at her city. Also there were strong problems with Yui here already, and this was the first live show she couldn't perform. Also was the last for Mikio, before he died on an accident (the guy of the guitar solo).

Mikiko, BABYMETAL's choreographer and mentor, told Su that a singer needs to feel the emotion in a song, but also that a singer must never cry on stage.
As others have mentioned, due to this being the first time YUI is not present, and the fact that they were performing in Hiroshima (her home town) for the very first time and to celebrate her 20th BD, SU was almost in tears, but was able to hold it. You had noticed that she was tearing up!

I wanted you to be by my side
    Even despair turns into light
    Even if it rains unstoppably
    Even despair turns into light
A sad rain will cast a rainbow forever
    I'll never see you again
    Don't forget
If your dreams continue, don't wake up
    Why did you laugh
    Why were you lonely
    No one knows
I just wanted to meet you
    Even despair turns into light
    Even if it rains unstoppably
    Even despair turns into light
A sad rain will cast a rainbow
The unstoppable rain will fill my heart forever

I‘m a sucker for good ballads, and when I heard this song for the first time, I was so damn happy that BABYMETAL are delivering on that front as well. All the people saying that BABYMETAL are fake should look at Su‘s eyes at 5:58 (of your video) and wash out their mouths with soap. I have been listening to BABYMETAL every single day for the last three years, and this song has yet to fail to make me cry. Either they are great, or I‘m the most wimpy guy out there (OK, maybe both).

This performance/concert is a very emotional one for all BM fans. This is from Legend S - Baptism XX concert. A 2 day concert in Su's hometown of Hiroshima to celebrate her 20th birthday (she will be 23 in Dec 2020). 20 is the age you're considered an adult in Japan so is a very special birthday.
What makes this even more emotional is this is the first time without Yui who had to pull out just days before due to illness (Yui never performed again with BM) and this is the last BM show with guitar legend Mikio (aka ko-gami, who is seen close to the end playing).. sadly he died only weeks later.
Finally Su has only ever perfomed this song live 5 times. She performed a few times when younger but said she did not have the appropriate emotional experience to do it justice so it got put on hold until these 2 shows where she knocks it out of the park. That moment you noticed when she is singing nears tears then BANG power Su switches in.

When she was very young and studying at Actors School Hiroshima, Su made a promise to her dance teacher (who would go onto be Babymetal's choreographer) that she would never cry onstage. Although this was a very emotional show for all the reasons other people in the comments have mentioned, and she came very close to it during this song in particular, she has kept that promise to this day.

As others have said this is very emotional performance for Babymetal and the fans. The first show without Yui-Chan, Mikita dies a month later (brown guitar), Su’s hometown show for the first time. Hiroshima, Su’s home of course has the horrible history of the atomic bomb, something Su has talked about in the past. All this leads to an amazing almost painful performance to watch. Great job guys.

"She can sing bro, I'm sorry."
    We are not ! ;-)
I would say this is rock/metal ballad, not Symphonic Metal.
Emotion and passion is her strong point and conveying that in the past way possible.
Or as she ones said about Babymetal live: No thinking, just feel it ! :-)
This show was at Legend S, her 20th birthday show, which is when you are in an adult in Japan.
Moa and thus also Yui are also old enough now to be adults.
But two of the 3 Avengers are not.
Legend S is in Suzuka's hometown of Hiroshima, she always wanted to come back perform there to show everything she had learned.
To bad the show didn't go as planned because Yuimetal couldn't perform of health reasons.
It would have been one of their best shows yet, they pulled out all the stops. An amazing stage set up, etc.

      @hugoa2637 Před 4 lety +6

It's a power ballad, which are very difficult to do well and not many artists can pull them off. Musically, this is one of BM's most impressive songs

    • @autohmae
      @autohmae Před 4 lety +5

@@hugoa2637 Kobametal mentioned in an interview, this song has many influences. "Musically speaking, it was in line with Billy Joel - Honesty"
The interviewer and me laughed at that. :-)
Wikipedia mentioned about the song Honesty: "the track is a predecessor of the power ballads of the 1980s and 1990s"
If you want to call it a powerballad, fine by me.
But let's remember it's very likely also a reference to X-Japan's Endless Rain, some say that's might have been influenced by Purple Rain from Prince and maybe Guns N Roses November Rain was influenced by that. And thus maybe No Rain, No Rainbow would fit that list. It would be great if it did.

I'm not really into ballads, but when Su and or BABYMETAL does a ballad, I always watch to the end. There is something about their passion for music and performing that just grabs me and won't let go. She is most definitely the power behind the throne that is Amuse Inc. I just hope that this company does right by Su and Moa and also the Kami Band. This is epic music from the beginning to the ending, which we all hope is a long ways away!

The saddest truth about this concert was Mikio Fujioka's last performance with Babymetal 5:43 he had a terrible accident on December 30, 2017 and he passed away on January 5, 2018.

The part that I wonder about is if it is just one thing, two things, or just the emotion/effort put into it (I tear up watching it without even thinking of anything, thus the last part there). If you think about it, it could be because of Yui having to be out with whatever the issue was for her (illness or injury), it could be Su's deep feelings regarding the use of the atomic bomb on her hometown of Hiroshima at the end of WWII, or if it is just spontaneous, which is why she could get control of it so quickly and transform it into her death stare at the end of that note.
It is impressive to understand that Su herself shelved the song early on because she didn't feel like she had lived enough of her life to understand the power and emotion that should be put into it. To have someone at the age of about 16 (or younger) have that type of self-reflection is rare. It is also what leads me to believe it could be because of Yui that she tears up, but this performance was at home, so again I go back to not knowing. Still, such a great performance and so powerful. She just keeps getting better!
