  • Should you buy a Mercedes SL55 F1 Pack? Here is a 6 months ownership review of my 2005, 45k Miles, SL55 AMG with the highly sought after optional extra 030 Performance Pack, now known as the F1 Pack/Pace Car. The 5.4L M113 is a relative of the Mercedes McLaren SLR, but it comes at a fraction of the cost in the R230. This is a true future classic and is still under appreciated, especially the 030/P30 variants.

    Agreed. Now with the hardtop roof SL extinct at Mercedes, these R230 SL's are appreciating dramatically. Many aftermarket improvements upgraded it's systems such as the magnetic transparent ABC filters. Simply replacing the original spec Pirelli PZeros with state of the art Michelin PS4S's does miracles for handling, road feel and ride.

      @@Dranreb865 go back and replace those slippery OEM PZeros and apologize after you thank me. Ditto the transparent magnet filters. But I don’t even use the PS4’s anymore. Clearly the Michelin Cup2’s are the greater miracle workers.

      The R230 SL of this era are simply the best looking of the SL models and still turn heads wherever you drive one, whether it’s the F1 pack or a ‘standard’ SL500. They were a very expensive car when new so the running costs reflect this but all similar cars, Ferraris, Aston Martins etc, are all the same. The difference is the purchase price now, with good SL500s available at around £10k and as you said SL55s around the £20-25k. At those prices you have an awesome V8 GT super car for very little money, so if it costs you a couple of grand a year in running costs that is still bargain motoring for the quality and performance you are getting. You just have to set aside a maintenance fund. Compare those costs against the deprecation on a new car and suddenly the R230 SLs maker perfect sense 👍

    besides the special status and the nice full leaher trim in the interior as well as the rims i think the difference is only remarkable if you go on the race track. there the limited slip, the bigger brakes and the second oil cooler show their value.. th next question is if you really want to waste such a classic on the race track..

    I have an '07 P30 (as they're called in the US) with 72k miles. Very rough ride on properly inflated tires. Skips laterally when going over a bump in a turn. Trying to figure out if that's the way it was built (as a "track" car) or if my accumulators are shot - which is what gearheads who never owned a P30 say. Thoughts anyone?

    Started looking into these recently. Can you comment on cabin rattles / fit & finish etc since these cars are getting quite old now? Also, how useful is the command system now in reality, is it just radio that you can use (if that?) since I imagine the phone tech is too old now?

    • @thedoo777
      @thedoo777 Před 2 měsíci

      Every one of them has problems but for a 20-year-old car!!! Get a new radio or command center and I suggest coilovers. I went with the hiros. When things start breaking down. I drive it in sport mode anyway old man's mode I don't know. I don't feel a difference now. I just simply replace those struts. I would not shy away from these cars
