His depth of knowledge is enviable and his honesty and sincerity is unbelievable. Thanks to New Indian Express for this beautiful interview with such relevant & in depth questions. I only wish if they would have asked him his opinion about India's first Oscar winning music composer, the man who is called "Mozart of Madras" by his fanatic young followers. Also questions could have been raised about our own veterans like Devarajan master, Babukka, Dakshina Murthy Swami & Arjunan master. To be frank this was the best interview ever of a Malayalam music composer. Wishing the best of health and long life to dear Jerry master.

You could see total sincerity in him. How beautifully he articulates his thoughts. He is a great musician not being properly understood or utilised by the industry.

Such a humble genius.. he gives generous credit wherever it is due, like the synergy with lyricists.. my most favorite music director from malayalam music industry. He came as a whiff of fresh chilled mountain air with minimalist arrangement in his debut song 'mizhiyoram' that blew my mind as child.. i could imagine someone singing in a foggy morning in an estate bungalow gardens, janaki ammas voice had that slight whispering shiver.. this was when i hadn't even seen the movie.. Right then I knew that Malayalam movie was entering a new phase.. the same happened when i heard chinna chinna asai in 1992.
Same feeling. Good narration.
One of the finest music composers who could effortlessly blend western classical structures with Hindustani/Shaastriya music, in the same league as Illayaraaja and Salilda. The beauty of his music is also the extensive use of acoustic instruments, which adds richness. It is a tragedy that his talents were not used to the full potential by film makers. It is sad to hear him say that he is ready from his end.

Why I am writing a piece on this Extraordinary Gentleman because even in the
“so called spiritual world”, one would find none like JA?
I have never come across such an unassertive, detached & “no airs” distinguished gentle soul like JA in the fraternity of Art & Music Industry in spite of him being a thorough genius in the given field.
JA is a perfectionist to the core but one could never observe him deriving any arrogance and impatience from him. About these qualities, those who are working/have worked with him would joyfully be testified/already done so by many.
I do not think any Indian could master the craft of both Western & Hindustani Music like JA as he is very firm about his convictions and professional brilliance as far as pure music is concerned.
Unfortunately, the Uncrowned King (UK) of the Malayalam Music Industry, who is a contemporary of JA, even though he has passed his prime time long back but still his writ prevails over the spineless Movie Industry, had some venomous enmity against JA on account of a certain interview he had given in one of the most reputed National English Newspapers. JA effortlessly handles both English & Hindi Besides his Mother tongue and the UK could not grasp what JA spoke in the interview due to his very often proven meek knowledge in the “ Queen’s “Language. When JA came to know about this freak misunderstanding, he called up UK and tried to assuage his ill-feelings by profusely apologising but UK could not forgive JA.
It's still unbelievable that for more than 3 decades nobody from the Malayalam Movie Industry called JA for his trade due to the above brazen factor and whenever he is being called, he proved his worth by churning out lovely music which towers over the rest always.
JA does not hold a grudge against anybody for his “ forced retirement” and he always says “I am sitting in the house only and if anybody calls I will play music for them, otherwise I do whatever comes in my way “.
Just a parting shot: JA was the favourite disciple of North Indian Music Legend
“NAUSHAD - Duniya Ke Rakhwale “fame - for 6 years - and he has graduated from Xavier's University in Pennsylvania and Masters from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY in Western Music.
He has a got a very young mind!

The interviewers do not have much knowledge of old Hindi songs. While Jerry sir talked about the peculiarities in the personalities of Rafi, Lata, Mukesh and Manna Dey, they didn't ask about the nature of Mahendra Kapoor whom he mentioned. In Admi he had sung a duet with Rafi: the only duet in their life. As Jerry sir was with Naushad at that time, he could have thrown light about it.
En kanmani was such a rare gem ....wish Jerry sir had composed more in Tamil also......
Honestly sad that the tean of journalists who went to interview sir could have asked more relevant questions than the usual cliche questions.
A man who has a plethora of experience who have been extracted more from. Proper home work was lacking. Who could have delved into many more about his songs like vachanam, poovalla ponthaliralla oor some devotional songs which were path breaking.

ചില സംഗീത സംവിധായകർക്കു യേശുദാസിന്റെ അതുല്യമായ കഴിവുകളെ മുഴുവനായിട്ട് അംഗീകരിക്കാൻ പ്രയാസമാണ്. അതവരുടെ സ്വഭാവമായിരിക്കാം. കാർണാടക സംഗീതജ്ഞൻ, എല്ലാ സ്ഥായിയിലും അനായാസം പാടുന്ന, അമൃതിനു സമാനമായ ശബ്ദമുള്ള മഹാഗായകൻ എന്നതിനൊക്കെ ഉപരിയായി യേശുദാസ് കഴിവ് തെളിയിച്ച ഒരു സംഗീത സംവിധായകനുമാണ്. അങ്ങിനെയുള്ള ഒരാളെകൊണ്ട് പാട്ടു പാടിപ്പിക്കുമ്പോൾ ചില സംഗീത സംവിധായകർക്കു പലവിധ കോംപ്ലക്സ് ഉണ്ടാവുക സ്വഭാവികമാണ്. അതു കൊണ്ടാണ് ശാസ്ത്രീയ സംഗീതം അഭ്യസിച്ചിട്ടില്ലാത്ത ഗായകർ ഇവർക്ക് പ്രിയങ്കരർ ആകുന്നതു. ഇവരാകുമ്പോൾ തിരുവായ്ക്ക് എതിർ വായ് ഇല്ലല്ലോ.
അതുകൊണ്ട് യേശുദാസ് എന്ന അമൂല്യ രത്‌നത്തെ വിലയിരുത്തേണ്ടത് ഇങ്ങിനെയുള്ള സംവിധായകരല്ല.
