    Reviews:
"If you love film noir movies, then do yourself a favor and see "The Big Combo". Why? Well, because the film has a lot of what noir fans love--brutal action, snappy dialog, great cinematography with wonderful shadows and a grittiness that epitomizes the genre. And, like all good noir, the film has no pretty boys--just solid acting and realism.
The film begins with a frustrated Lieutenant (Cornel Wilde) lamenting that months of work have failed to come up with anything useful to convict a local mobster (Richard Conte). To make things worse, the Captain has ordered the investigation to be dropped. So, on his own, Wilde pushes those around Conte to testify against him. The problem is, Conte is ruthless and has two seemingly gay thugs (Lee Van Cleef and Early Holliman) to do his dirty work. Ultimately, however, things start to break--can tough-cop Wilde finally get the goods on him? The film is much more brutal and harsh in style than most noir. In particularly, its handling of a taboo for the Post-Production Code era (gay hit men)--though it's not 100% obvious. But, for 1955, it's pretty risqué...and tough. Well worth seeing--with good acting, a taut script and plenty of excitement.
By the way, I have one minor complaint. John Hoyt's 'Swedish' accent was downright silly--and sounded German. In fact, until they said he was a Swede, I just assumed he was German. Now Hoyt was a fine character actor (and played the Dr. McCoy role in the "Star Trek" pilot)--but here he's just out of his element." -written by "MartinHafer" on IMDb.com

I *_LOOOVE_* this savory little "taste of Noir" crime thriller every time I watch it.... for Decades!!! 👌
Thank You ARTFLIX for the beautiful HD quality upload, with rather classic, time-honored performances by both Richard Conte and Cornel Wilde.
Not really _"True Noir",_ but Definitely DAMN WELL CLOSE ENOUGH.... 😎

One of the best noir films ever made : I saw it almost fifty times, it 's a masterpiece...
David Raksin, great composer (Laura, For Ever Amber, It's a Big Country, Whirpool, Suddenly), underrated in my opinion, gives here once again, a wonderful score.
Thank you vey much, the copy is very good.

I remember liking Conte, as a kid in the 70s. Not sure what I had seen him in, but he was older. I feel bad because I didn't know he had already died by that time, 1977ish. I was fascinated by black and white for some reason. We knew if something was BnW, it was from our parents, or grandparents time. If it was color ,it was usually more recent. 70s kids had the unique timing, of having a definite chronological border, in film and television. There's music and video, from 40 years ago, and some of it looks and sounds like it was done recently. Production value improved so much, its often hard to guess the year of something from the late 80s onward. I really like this style of film noir , most have some old jazz in the sound track, and that seals the deal. They always have a desperate energy.

You captured it! Great review of the classic appeal of the noir genre, the culture before ( the rise - 1940s) and the after ( the fall -1970s) of the American dream. Seen No Way Out⁉️ Brings you right up to the present moment, except now we have the stylishly dramatized gangster, made to look heroic in technicolor nightmares like Power and Snowfall, stripped of ideas and relatable characters but plenty of sensational sex, narcotics corruption and hypnotic hip hop soundtracks.

Great script, direction. Richard Conte always fun to watch. Lee Van Cleef long before he tangled with Clint Eastwood in a couple of excellent Sergio Leone westerns. And Jean Wallace, one of the loveliest of the blonde bombshells of that era.

My review from a few years ago.
"Glad I saw, for the second time, THE BIG COMBO (1955) on CUNY TV last night..Directed in fine style by Joseph H. Lewis, also responsible for My Name is Julia Ross (1945) and Gun Crazy.(1949). A real testament to a director who in 1938 and early 1940's was turning out six and seven bottom of the barrel quickies a year.
Basically the story line is a police lieutenant (Cornel Wilde) goes after a criminal (Richard Conte) whose wife (Jean Wallace) does not love him. Wilde hopes she will assist him in his quest. Conte, full of chirping, venomous confidence, gives the best performance I've ever seen from him. He's psychologically aware, cunning and ruthless. Brian Donlevy, Lee Van Cleef and Earl Hollman are all fine as Conte's minions as is the striking looking Helene Stanton as Wilde's stripper girlfriend. The only weak link, IMO, is Wallace who is a bit one dimensional in her acting.
From the dark opening alley chase sequence to the last shot in white fog, this is some kind of film. Cinematographer John Alton is universally praised for his style and The Big Combo might be his finest achievement. A claustrophobic tale filled with shadows, harsh facial lighting and spotlights. The whole film is an amazing exercise in painting with light (the title of his book). David Raksin's jazz influenced score is also perfect for the roller coaster twists and turns on the screen.
The Big Combo has everything--guns, killings, violence and torture. Oh, and toss in sexual perversity and homosexuality as some reviewers have stated. .There is a brilliant and brutal torture scene that is almost unbearable to watch, a startling and most likely unique for its time machine gun killing, and an inventive last scene that, due to budget limitations, was fashioned out of skeleton sets and the most meager of props. This marvelous little noir was shot in 26 days---give Joseph Lewis full credit here. Like Edgar G. Ulmer, another poverty row director, Lewis had the wonderful ability to create gems out of rubble.
Foster Hirsch is rapidly becoming one of my favorite commentators on noir. Last night he said " The Big Combo is a summation of noir themes" He is right; this late in the noir cycle film has everything. He also stated " There's not a normal, well adjusted character in the film." Spot on again.. Hero police lieutenants are supposed to be 100% good guys but here Wilde is anything but. In this respect The Big Combo reminds me of Kiss Me Deadly. Explosive melodramatic plot inhabited by flawed, unsympathetic characters. At one point in the program Hirsch, the author of 16 books related to film and theater, asked the host of the show, Jerry Carlson, a question because Hirsch wasn't sure himself. This is the kind of intelligent, humble man for whom I have the utmost respect and admiration.
If you yearn for a noir that touches all bases, look no further than The Big Combo .Very highly recommended. Simply one of the great noirs.
