I Did NOT Expect This โข Taking The Train From Cancun To Playa Del Carmen โข May 2024

- We decided to take the new Tren Maya or Mayan Train from Cancun to Playa del Carmen for the day, and letโs just say, it was an adventure!
I found out exactly how little Spanish I actually knew, and we ended up having to McGyver our plans to get to/from the train stations, but overall, I think the train is FANTASTIC and is a much safer way to get to Playa del Carmen or Tulum.
We started off the day catching an Uber to the train station & catching the 9:30am train. It took an hour to get to Playa del Carmen, with about an 8 minute stop in Puerto Morelos. The non-stop bus to Playa del Carmen left the station at 11am and took 20 mins to get into town.
On the way back, we took a taxi, as weโd missed the bus due to my lacking Spanglish skills (and common sense, if Iโm honest!) and that took 20 mins, getting us to the terminal with seconds to spare for the 2:30 train.
The ride back to Cancun was another hour, followed by another 20 min wait to depart on the ADO to the downtown (Centro) Cancun bus terminal. It took about 30 mins to get to the ADO station in mid-afternoon, weekday traffic.
The local bus was another 30 mins or so, to get to the Sandos Cancun, in the middle of the Hotel Zone.
The train is new & clean, has USB ports for charging your phone, and has toilets as well as a food/drink car. It is sometimes slow but reached speeds up to 125km at points and it is expected to be much faster in future, after the trains have been running for a while.
Iโm excited to plan a trip around the train routes next year, and see places that were previously very difficult to get to, such as Bacalar and even Merida, and so much more of the area.
Would you try the train?

This is going to open up interior Mexico to so many more people. Canโt wait!
Yes I agree! It's going to be so interesting to see some new places!
Thank you! Would try this out myself next time Iโm in Mexico.
Hi Marilyn! Well itโs only going to get better and better. I am looking forward to seeing new destinations!
New train with 7 cars for long distance is coming on September, that will be like the premium version, with beds and private rooms
HI Omar! Wow that'll be great! I presume that'll be for the northbound routes or have they resumed construction on the routes south of Playa del Carmen?
I love your husband's accent!
Hi Christine! Thanks!! Heโs English but grew up all over so itโs a bit of a mix. He isnโt often in videos but he seems to be getting more comfortable in front of the camera!!
Can you elaborate on how long it takes to get to the major tourist places and where it goes exactly and is the train finished and what parts is not.
Hi Eden! It was about a 20-30 minute ride from our hotel (Sandos Cancun) to the train station (near the airport) and then from the Puerto Morelos station, it was a 10km drive to downtown (I didn't get off there, but on other videos, I've seen that they also have an ADO pick up set up). From Playa del Carmen, the ADO bus left about 30 minutes after the train arrived and then it was a 20 minute drive to the bus station. Another 15 minute walk and you're at the Cozumel Ultramar ferry terminal. From the bus station, maybe a 5 minute walk to 5th Ave.
The train going south to Puerto Aventuras and Tulum is not finished yet and everything else south is still being constructed but is expected to be complete by later this year.
The train follows the highway but is maybe 10km inland from it, so it's not a particularly scenic ride, other than seeing the occasional lake and lots of greenery, but it was a lot less stressful than driving in traffic along the highway and way more safe - I've seen some horrific accidents along the highway over the years.
At this time, you can take the train up to Merida and Chichen Itza, and down south along the east coast of Quintana Roo, as far as the train goes (last stop is Palenque in Chiapas). It seems like the train route is not located in the local towns, but they've arranged transportation to get you from the train to the towns.
It's going to be pretty exciting to take the train when it's done and see some areas that would otherwise be very challenging to see.
That 400 pesos taxi ride from the ADO Alterna in PDC to the PDC train station was a complete rip-off. Should have been no more than 150.
Hi John! Iโm quite certain youโre right but we decided to throw some money at the problem to fix our situation and make that train instead of waiting several more for the next one. ๐คทโโ๏ธ it is what it is and Iโll be better prepared next time - hence me sharing my dumb travel mistakes with you so you can avoid them!! ๐
@@ChristineTurner Understood. The need to travel to and from the various stations makes taking the train a pretty big drawback, unfortunately. I live in Playa and have still not tried it.
@@johnwoodham3263 Oh wow. Well if you could drive to the train, that's an option, but if you're going to drive that far... I think they'll improve things fairly quickly for those stations. Unfortunate that the southbound train development has been put on hold but considering their environmental concerns, it makes total sense.
