- This is the 70th anniversary of the launch of the Waverley paddle steamer, the last seagoing passenger carrying paddle steamer in the world.
PS Waverley, built in 1946, she sailed from Craigendoran on the Firth of Clyde to Arrocharon Loch Long until 1973. Bought by the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society (PSPS), she has been restored to her 1947 appearance and now operates passenger excursions around the British coast.
Waverley is powered by a three-crank diagonal triple-expansion marine steam engine built by Rankin & Blackmore, Engineers, Eagle Foundry, Greenock, Scotland. It is rated at 2,100 IHP and achieved a trial speed of 18.37 knots (34.02 km/h; 21.14 mph) at 57.8 rpm. Passengers can watch these engines from passageways on either side of the engine room.
The main crank is solidly attached to both paddle wheels so they cannot turn independently of each other. The Waverley therefore has a much larger turning circle than modern ferries.
Primarily based in the Clyde, Waverley spends 6 weeks between September and October cruising the Bristol Channel, the Solent and the Thames before returning to the Clyde for two sailings in October.
Rothesay Castles dates back to the early 13th century and is remarkably well preserved in spite of its age. Built by the Stewart family to defend against invading Norwegian fleets, Rothesay’s immense circular curtain wall makes it unique in Scotland.

Just watched this on the big telly...2 words, Absolutely Stunning! Thanks for sharing this beautiful vid!
Absolutely beautiful footage. I am so happy to have been able to buy a flat on this lovely little isle. I've also spent a day on the Waverley and it takes the stress levels back about 50 years. Thanks for doing this; I can show off Bute and the Waverley to my friends in London.
