  • On East Asia Tonight (Jul 8), a look at Japan and the Philippines' newly signed defence deal allowing troops to be deployed on each other's territory; China's report on coral reef damage on a disputed shoal in the South China Sea, and a top Myanmar army chief's visit to China. We also look at striking Samsung workers in South Korea, and Tokyo's governor race, where incumbent Yuriko Koike as secured a third term after a landslide win.

People often forget that ASEAN's main principle is of non-interference among its members. The organization's purpose is to resolve differences so the member countries can be good neighbors to each others. It's born out of necessity to prevent the region from being torn apart internally by its own inhabitant countries, and externally by outside forces (it was the US and USSR during the cold war).
But there's some important bits in what you said, that if ASEAN can't provide steps to guarantee the security of its members, then it might fail to prevent the region from being torn apart by outside forces. The first one is China-PH conflict, and the second one if there would be some kind of Indo-Pacific NATO involving the Philippines (yes, this one is a major problem for the region because it will invariably increase tension while providing security for PH in the short term).

I think it's important to note that with or without CCP's aggression in the region, PH-JP was gonna have this pact regardless, it was something that has been considered multiple times before it's just that the recent mutual conflict with China motivated the two countries to finally agree on something. I wouldn't be surprised if S.Korea wants to be part of this in the near future as they are also distrustful of the CCP and does not support their expansive claims.

Yes I don't know too much of India-Russia history, but I regularly read the work of veteran senior Indian Ambassador Bhadrakumar (who was India's top ambassador to Russia for years) on his Indian punchline blog. For example, read the Ambassador's latest two pieces about India-Russia ties in which he states that for the benefit of India, it must productively engage with China and choose a Russia-India-China tilt as that's the way forward out of poverty for millions of Indian people.
The Chinese and ASEAN, where I live in SG, very much want better ties & friendship with India, but Indians must engage in that. And realize there's little to gain for India with the colonial-minded US and West except for more usury, as you're not really them, especially with Trump's imminent return.

In effect, Washington forced Manila to cede that set of features to the PRC.

China's illegal presence and creeping expansion within the Philippine Exclusive. Economic Zone is a blatant disregard to international law of UNCLOS.
China's nine-dash line claim was invalidated by the UNCLOS Permanent
Court of arbitration at the Hague in 2016...
China is among the first countries who signed the UNCLOS in 1982 and ratified it in 1994. But now China refuses to follow the rules based order of UNCLOS and rejects the arbitral court's' ruling, asserts sovereignty and contol of the WPS and the south china sea,
wants to take Taiwan and Senkaku islands.
To deter/counter China's belligerent expansionism in Philippine EEZ,
The PCG, JCG and USCG should jointly, regularly patrol the WPS, the Scarborough, Ayungin, and Escoda shoals.
US Japan deploy troops, missiles and Typhon launchers systems,in the islands thru EDCA and RAA.

Singapore, the smartest country, as well as the most successful one in ASEAN, has been playing smart geopolitical balancing games between super powers for decades, for the maximum benefit of the country, without being squeezed and sacrificed as cannon fodder by the US or China.
Filipino people always look at the success of Singapore with envy, and wonder why they can't replicate the best practices in their homeland and why their country is still deeply trapped in US colony mentality without a clear way out.
Truth hurts. A smart leader plays smart geopolitical games and invites American and Chinese companies to build factories in order to generate jobs and increase revenue, while a clueless leader easily gets emotional like a kid, often is played by geopolitical players as chess pieces, invites foreign military to build bases in order to generate tensions and increase the risk of conflicts, and sacrifices the country's development and trade.
Japan and S. Korea can sit down for negotiations and cooperations, despite of their long time disputes over the sovereignty of the Liancourt Rocks in the sea between them. That is political wisdom and diplomatic maturity on full display.
Other countries such as China and the Philippines can definitely learn from S. Korea and Japan to manage their difference on South China Sea, Taiwan, MILF or whatever, and develop their relationship.
Even the leaders of Vietnam and Malaysia are now much smarter, more resilient and pragmatic than P-Noy and BBM. Now the Philippines is the only ASEAN member that works as proxy for Uncle Sam in Southeast Asia, and puts itself into current awkward position of either losing face or losing credibility.
Soon, even Laos and Cambodia will become richer than the Philippines. The Philippines will only compare better than Myanmar.
