    Once in a blue moon a band comes along that transcends the norm, not only with their music but also by who they are, the message they represent & by the very nature of the invisible "Feel good" aura they exude that envelops every audience. A band who can lift your spirits, make you smile, cry, laugh, love or just sit back & say "WOW". That is the band you fall in love with forever & that band is BAND-MAID.🙂

    Your mention of how the crazy solo duel thing was less complex and more to fit the energy of the song is actually why I enjoy their solos the most. There are many talented, wonderful guitar players out there, that can play insane, complex, finger blistering solos. And they are awesome. But what makes me enjoy a Band-Maid solo, is that it fits the song. It feels like it's supposed to be there, not an interruption. Daydreaming is my favorite example still. The build up, then epic emotional release. Chef's kiss.

      @eatsmylifeYT Před 4 měsíci +1

      That's one thing I love about Band Maid. They have no excessively complex and showy solos (whatever instrument) that goes off the main melody line and into every direction then goes back to the original melody, and they all, like you say, "fit the song".

    The members of BAND-MAID once said this during the MC for a concert in Japan.
    The English word "HATE (phonetic symbols: héit)" is pronounced in the Romanized pronunciation as "hate (phonetic symbols: hǝte, hate)," which means "? =Question mark" in Japanese.
    So they seem to enjoy pronouncing this song as "Hate (hǝte)?" in the Romanized pronunciation on purpose (tilting their head to the side), not as "HATE (héit)" in English!
    So, the title of the song, "?" is just a pun that Japanese people can understand. LOL

    Thank you for having the courage to say that they don't always write the most complicated stuff, because i feel like people who are not musicians, often times get mislead by reactors who overhype everything as if it was the most impressive thing they had ever heard. And while i would like for them to go all Dream Theater on us for one song each album, to show what they're really capable of, i think what they write is, in a way more impressive than Dream Theater, because they know how to show restraint. And sometimes, less is more! Thank you for always keeping it real!

    Congrats Chase on your channel coming of age. When you go back and listen to it again note Miku's part (left ear as usual) leading into Kanami and Misa's dual. She is just strumming cords when Misa first comes to the fore but when she suddenly drops out it makes the bass solo really pop. Great writing by Kanami as usual. Also when she comes back in playing the ascending cords toward the end of the dual it adds great tension as she then joins them in that chugging climax. Subtle but another great example of "Band-Maid doing Band-Maid things".

    Listening to this song through the earphones and speakers, it's an good song. Hearing and seeing this song live in person is a whole different energy. Akane's drumming off the bat with this song is high energy!!! It's one of the highlight for me during the Sacramento show.

  • @785boats
    @785boats Před 4 měsíci +6

    And on top of everything else. There are two women wearing the most sensible footwear for a three and a half hour concert. Misa, with none. And Akane, with her flat soled
    Dr Martens.
    So yeah 'Choose Me' from the same concert. Made from 24 fancams, over the live sound, as Saiki, Misa, & Akane, walk around the audience on the catwalks. So precious.
    And then for your acoustic flavour, Saiki doing the same song in the same show with just her playing the piano & singing. Yep. Two versions of the same song in the same show.

    The extended middle to HATE? is amazing. It's not one of my top favorite BAND-MAID songs, but it's definitely one of my favorite live performances. I got to stand ten feet on front of Kanami and MISA as they did all this, for their Minneapolis show back in August '23. It's as amazing as you imagine.
    Another note. In the real air at a live show, Kanami's guitar is definitely out in front. It is loud. It is clear. I agree the mix folks need to bump up the guitar a *bit* more, for the CZcams videos. Still, these Yokohama mixes still sound great, in my headphones, and the mix is much better than for some of the older live videos. E.g., Domination.

    Chase, this does grow on you. Some earlier live versions, including at Lollapalooza, were a bit muddy, this is the cleanest recording and the melody and chorus hook will stick after a couple of listens.
    As mentioned in the chat, it follows directly from Dice, linked by the Akane drum piece, which is why this clip starts a bit abruptly. If you get hold of the bluray you'll appreciate how they flow together seamlessly.
    Now there's an idea, you could do a Twitch session of the whole show, only need about 4 hours, lol! Greatly enjoyed this reaction, thanks again.

    This one took some time to grow on me, but it's definitely in the top half of my list of preference for Band Maid songs now. I'm terrible at ranking beyond that, and I honestly enjoy basically their entire catalog from New Beginning on (I left Maid in Japan off of my all-Band-Maid playlist, as it just doesn't catch my ear the same). It *is* probably one of the best diss tracks I've heard in quite some time.
    If you want to really get the emotional side of these ladies, I highly recommend checking out the recently released live version of Endless Story. Or for an acoustic touch with Miku on vocals, check out Sayonakidori, also on their official channel.

    So, I was at this show last November. And you are 100% correct that this show was beyond amazing. I get to watch these videos, and again like you said, I get to relive and remember that moment in life and how I felt. Simply put there are few words that can accurately convey just how amazing this show was. I've been to almost 20 Band-Maid shows at this point and this was easily one of my top 3 shows. 3+ hours of pure happiness, joy, shared pride for them, emotional overload, and of course amazing music. We were there for 3 hours and we STILL WANTED MORE at the end of it. Those 3 hours flew by in a heartbeat it was crazy.
    As to the song itself, I love this song. Saiki's lyrics (based on infidelity within Japanese celebrity circles allegedly) are powerful and you are correct in that this is one of the few times they have cursed in a song. You'll have to discover the other one(s). But while you may not find the chorus as hooky.... I absolutely LOVE the chorus and find it to be one of my favorites. The vocal melody of the chorus is just an earworm to me and I find myself singing it in my head randomly all the time. Just shows how people can take different views on a great song and both still enjoy it for different reasons. That's what make discussing music, respecting others views on it, so much fun. And yeah, MISA/Kanami solo section was actually Saiki's idea and in true Band-Maid fashion they stepped up to her challenge and slayed it. Doesn't have to be overly complex to be amazing, entertaining, and enjoyable.

    @ApexRadius Před 4 měsíci +4

    Listen to this song a few more times and it will likely rank pretty high. That chorus actually has a pretty big hook. It's just slightly unconventional, and reminiscent of 40's swing/big-band music.
    You're correct about the guitar-bass trading session. It's not about flash; it's about groove, feel, and excitement. BUT the monster build before the last chorus is extraordinary. Kanami's initially ascending shredding then reverses itself into a descending chromatic pattern with Misa, Miku, and Akane powerfully punctuating it. Miku's screaming is icing on the cake. Just great.
    Welcome to the USA, Chase. It's a bit messy here right now but we'll get it sorted out...hopefully.

    I fully believe Kanami / MISA / Akane could throw some Polyphia shit out there if they wanted to. For that matter, hell, they could likely write one helluva country song if they set their minds to it. They're not the best musicians in the world, of course, though they're damned good. For my tastes, though, for whatever synapses govern what sounds amazing to me, they're the best band in the world. Incredibly consistent quality of product. In fact if they were a good, rather than a service, they would be Buy It For Life.

    Nice reaction. My only nitpick with Band Maid, and I love these girls - listen to them every day - is the guitars often being lost in the mix, especially in the live videos. The house mix when you see them live is fine. The lead guitar rings out. (They are amazing to hear in a room with you). But the recording mix pushes it back for some reason. I assume it has to do with what seems to be a contemporary preference for bass sounds. Probably stems for over compression and current play back tech.

    Oh you'll get round to liking this song even more, especially after you realize how acidic the lyrics are, befitting the title of the song. Amazing lyrics from Saiki who wrote this one. Also, another reactor commented on how MISA and Kanami's solo duel sounded exactly like the progression of an argument between a couple. Put all these facts together, and suddenly, I can't quite get the whole song out of my head.
    Don't want to be on Saiki's wrong side, yeah.... ever....

    No, it's not my favorite Band-Maid song, but one that, as you said, is perfect for live performances. And it's already one of their best imho. As you also said, not because of technical complexity, but because you can hear and see the fun they have, and Saiki's surely most brutal lyrics to date. 😂🤘🏻
    Your videos were one of the first I saw when I started watching reactions and it is indeed fun to watch them again from time to time. :) Oh, and regarding your request for acoustics and/or live performances of songs that are otherwise only known in the studio version, I will send you an e-mail shortly if you don't mind. They are genre’ defying. Is it pop rock, metal, alternative, classic rock, hard rock?
    It’s all of the above done as good as it gets. I’m 66. Band Maid is THE best rock band I’ve heard since grunge rock from the Pacific Northwest. The fact that they are an all female band from Japan … wearing maid outfits?!?
    Is mind boggling.

    Sir Chase, who has done 26 Band Maid reactions so far, might think our little Maids have no more hits?
    Haha! Joke’s on you!
    These aren’t deep cuts. Each of these are either setlist standards or Maidiac-anointed masterpieces:
    1) “Daydreaming,” OMV. The a-side to the “Choose Me” release.
    2) “Moratorium,” LIVE. A poll showed this is on the top ten list of over 80% of Maidiacs
    3) “Secret My Lips/ Secret Maiko Lips” The first, a fiery riff, passionate lyrics, and a bridge as impactful as the one in “Blooming.” The second? An equally fiery retort from their arch nemesis Maikos who add traditional instrumentation to their version
    Oh, there are more. Many more 🤘🏽

    Great reaction and I especially like your comments about artists maturing and growing. The first artist I listened to as a kid was Elvis Presley and the first album I bought with my own money was "Rubber Soul" by the Beatles. So, after all these decades, I certainly see what you mean. Keep up the great work!

    The previous song from this marvelous women you reacted to, "Don't you tell me Live", has an old video for the "record version" of the song, i guess one should call it. To day, i think of it as the most visually funny from this band. I don't think you reacted to it here in youtube.
    Maybe a good candidate for the next one?

    I have learned to trust Band-Maid: they push themselves and each other, patiently. I've never seen a band so intent on taking themselves to the next level. And they don't expect instant results, but they refuse to be complacent. The Maids really take practicing seriously and they teach each other how to play their instruments. They put in many hours daily; that's how they make it look so effortless. Akane takes bass lessons from Misa. Akane has been teaching drums to all of them. Saiki has learned keyboards. Kanami is always attempting to master new techniques and she is so proud of Miku's skill as a guitarist. Band-Maid seems to have applied the Toyota Quality and Development System to a rock band and they are producing innovative product. Every time you think they can't possibly get better, they do.

    The title of this song has "?" because "HATE" is read "はて" in Japanese, which is typically used in question.
    Saiki (lead vocal) wrote the lyrics, and she wanted to use the phrase "I hate you". She decided the title to be "HATE", and then she realized that "HATE" can be read "はて", so she put "?" to make the title "HATE?". "はて?" can be translated as "What?".
    Many overseas reactors were saying that "Title should be "HATE!" not "HATE?". Saiki must be smiling a lot...probably😏
    Btw, it was the 27th song of their 33-song setlist for this show😉

    Not my favourite studio song, but I was surprised how much this song lifted the energy in the concert. Miku's vocals are a bit lost in this mix (compared to a previous concert and the album) - she has a really nice harmony in the chorus that doesn't come through so much here.

    The reason the guitars are lost is because the CZcams master appears to have been given the adolescent practice of dynamic compression that's not in the original. I say adolescent, because any producer/engineer worth their shit doesn't resort to dynamic compression but uses equalization and limiter to deal with any unwanted frequency problems.

    • @11alpha48

    These ladies are very smart and not only do they know that "reactors" help spread awareness of them, but they watch many and will even call out those they recognise at their shows.
    With MISA's and Kanami's "conversation, don't forget Okane's drumming driving it along behind them, with further support from Miku.

    I frikkin' love this band, and Chase is so right, they always make me happy. BAND-MAID always improves my mood, especially with certain songs like Freedom, and I wouldn't call that "best", since it's a pretty simple one, but it's one of my favourites for the sheer vibes.
    I sort of agree on allowing bands to change, but sometimes it's just not for the better...Metallica, for instance...but it was Opeth that got me into extreme vocals when they started to get more prog. I'm sure I could think of other examples that go either way if I thought about it for a while. It's really very subjective. I'm not going to like any band that suddenly changed and swerved into Nu Metal, for example, because I detest that sound, but if you like it, that's fine.
