I'm here because I'm in JROTC and doing orienteering, and I'm a freshman so this is my first time doing this kind of thing our first competition is this weekend!
I was thinking of making this video. Learned all this in the Navy Seabees. You did a great job. Other videos don't explain the averaging for different types of terrain and that is exactly why I wanted to make a video. Also, some people may want to have nine beads on each section, for expanded range count. In this case, I recommend two different bead colors to differentiate the hundreds from the thousands.
I put together a complete curriculum for a two day land navigation class and advertised it locally. Only four people signed up. In class day, only two showed up. Before lunch time, one wanted to quit and go home. Myself and the other student convinced him to not give up. He was just struggling with all the map and compass stuff. We slowed down and helped him through it.
I provided some navigation tools for the students to keep and I gave them tons of resources for follow up learning and practice. I told them, you MUST practice, rehearse, and re-study ALL of these concepts. It does you no good to be in the field and struggling to remember what you were taught in class.
I provided them with enough beginner navigation tools and packable cheats to carry with them in the field, and gave them an online source for purchasing about any navigation aid they would ever need. As part of their class fee, I offered that any student can sit through the training again for free when space is available, but they have to bring their original books and supplies that they received at their first class.
Unfortunately, I moved a short time later and haven't advertised or taught the class again.
Boy I would love to attend a class like this. I absolutely love this topic! What state do you live in? I would like to find someone to do this with.
Even though this is an older video, I accept the challenge of learning my pacing. You may never see the comments on an older video but thank you for the information. You have inspired me to learn more and refueled the desire to return to the great outdoors more often.
I seen this video when it came out years ago. I finally got the equipment and the time to go out. I knew exactly who to return to, to come back and get a refresher course. His videos are gold.

Another great video. I have a set of beads and have used them incorrectly! Im fixing that today! I also enjoy and learned tons of great info from the compass and knots videos. I carry # 2 pencils that I can snap in half for compactness and they can be sharpened by knife or even rubbing on a rock.

2016. Wow this is outstanding(I talk like this too). I wanted a refresh on land navigation. I really appreciate this and I know I'll be back in the future going through these videos again
I learned a very important lesson from this video. Always use the correct tool for the job. I tried using a GPS watch and was getting multiple different readings. I then tried using a survey tool to measure 328 feet to equal 100 m. At the end of the day, I decided to order some tape and make life much easier on myself.
That’s really awesome..I’ve always wanted to learn this. Thanks for the lesson on setting an average pace count..and using ranger beads..the one with the skulls is killer by the way..learned something new today and that is Outstanding!

My wife brought my attention to an interesting alternative to these ranger beads: a mechanical click counter. Costs just 7$
Make sure your beads are snug to the cord, meaning they don’t slip down as you traverse the route of travel. Use the appropriate size cord to the inside diameter of the beads to ensure they’re snug and not slipping down as you hike. Otherwise, you’ll lose your count. Great training vid!!!

I like a pack of Ticonderoga no.2 pencils. In a waterproof case, they are are easy to sharpen and multipurpose. Emergency tinder ir kindling in an extreme emergency.

I liked your video! I watched all the way through. I learned about pace counts as a junior in college at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. I leaned it similar to your method in a surveying class in 1975. I especially liked your explanation of pacing beads. Thanks for a great video!

I do a similar method, but instead of counting each time my right foot touches, I count each step of both feet and use this to determine my pace count for the distance. I find it is easier to keep up with my count using this method while doing other things while walking. I can still use the beads in the same way by adjusting the count for my method. I can also get a little more accurate count this way. It still works the same jsut more counting for each 100 meters (or yards).
