  • Non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is a condition characterized by sudden, painless vision loss in one eye due to damage to the optic nerve. While the exact cause of NAION is not fully understood, there are some associations with certain drugs. Drugs that have been implicated or suspected to potentially increase the risk of NAION include:
Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors: These are drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction, such as Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. They have been associated with an increased risk of NAION, although the absolute risk is low.
Amiodarone: This is an antiarrhythmic medication used to treat heart rhythm problems. It has been reported in some cases to be associated with NAION.
Isotretinoin: This is a medication used to treat severe acne. There have been rare reports of NAION associated with isotretinoin use.
It's important to note that the association between these drugs and NAION is not fully established and the absolute risk remains low. If you have concerns about your medications and potential risks of NAION, it's best to discuss them with your healthcare provider.
