Thanks Sophia! Been looking for this fix for a year. What a relief to know I can retile under the dishwasher where the subfloor was destroyed.
Tried this out on my tiles over the last week they had been down for over 15 years and ground in mortar and adhesive. In the UK I used High Strength Brick Acid - Containing Hydrochloric Acid, following your steps, my tiles are like new, would recommend the gloves and goggles while going through the process. Great video and tips, thank you.
Trying your method now on some tiles I needed to try to save! I’ve done the same thing.. checked them after a few hours and some of the mortar is already coming off.. looking forward to tomorrow morning and saving my tiles! THANK YOU!! Great video!
Thank you Sophia, this is exactly what I need
Thanks so much for this video! It worked great on some tiles I needed to pull up and reuse for a rotted subfloor repair.
This worked perfectly. I bought the muriatic acid at a local pool supply company. I fill my Dollar Tree tool box with only acid, leaving it on the 4 boarder tiles (4x6 inches) for several days. The chemical worked great!
Wanted to give you an update.. MOST of it came off by the next morning but some was really stubborn so I dumped the liquid and started with fresh acid/water.. used roughly a 50/50 mix and soaked them again today. Look like new tiles!! Thank you again!!
I have all but the gloves. I am elated that there was a youtube video to help me save a few pieses of tile. Now I can save my kitchen floor because my tile is no longer carried and a frozen can of cola fell and cracked one tile. Thank you Sophia.
Please wear a chemical mask. "Charcoal filters " A must to have.
Thank you, you are brilliant for this
Great idea. Looking forward to doing it. :) Thank you! :)
going to try this, thank you
Sophia, I wish I could send you before and after pic's of the area I repaired, I could not have done it without you, thanks again. I tried to use your method on bathroom tile from the last 60's, it was a no go. they used tile mastic doing research on how to do it.
AWESOME VIDEO !!!!!! You just saved my 1996 tiles from the Garbage SKIP. Thank you sooooo much
This method works fantastic. I had tons of loose tiles in a new home I purchased so we popped em off and redid the flooring. Thanks to this method I didn't have to buy new tiles!
Since I had triple the amount of tiles in this video I used a bit more acid and soaked em in a giant storage bin. There was so much thinset, it did take a few days for it all to come off. Every day a layer would remove, and I would resoak until it all came off. Do not sit there and scrub! It's so much easier to scrape what you can, re-soak, and come back the next day to repeat.
I would also recommend wearing a good mask! This acid is really really strong and probably not good for the lungs at alllll.
Thanks Bryan, for sharing all your good tips!
Thank you You just made my day; my week; my month. I was wondering if there was really a method. I have several 18"x18" tiles that popped-up in my roof terrace after a small earthquake shake. About 40 tiles popped-up. I need to clean them in order to place them back; they are not found any longer; they were bought 15 years ago. I will try that Muriatic Acid tomorrow. I figure I can use the whole gallon into a big container and place the tiles in a vertical position.
Very clever idea! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and video!
Awesome! Also it should be known that the tiles don't have to be 100% clean. They need to be clean enough to lay flat with the new adhesive.
Omg I had 7 old tiles that I needed to use to replace a few cracked tiles in my kitchen .didn't know how to remove the old dried thinset without grinding it off . saw this video and gave it a try .I soaks them for two days the thin set came off like butter . saved me from hours of grinding
Yes!
Thank You for sharing your experience!
Great video with clear instructions 👍🏿. So the acid won’t remove any of the color from the tiles. The ones I will be working with are yellow, so just thought I’d enquire. Thanks for sharing your process 😉
Thanks for the lovely comment. The method didn’t remove color from mine. I suggest to do a test on one first.
How do you dispose of the acid?
THANK YOU, I had enuff spare and used tiles to make it look like it had never been repaired. going to get the acid and gloves tomorrow. I have the wire brush and the other tools. I wanted to give an update, got 90% of the mastic off the tiles. I can't afford to break any of my tiles can't buy them anymore, they stopped production so I got a 2nd gallon and they are soaking again for 24 hours.
the floor tiles have been soaking since 4 PM, and it was bubbling. I pulled out a bathroom several years ago and put the 4" x 4" tile in the basement when the floor tiles are done the old bathroom tiles go in, waste not, want not, lol. the tiles date back to the late '60s.
How can l clean cement off marble?
Thank You Stephanie for buying me a Ko-fi! ko-fi.com/sophiasaysdiy
Thank you for this. How do you dispose of the muriatic acid/water mixture?
It may vary depending on where you live. Contact your local hazardous waste disposal facility.
@@SophiaSaysDIY Thank you.
You can neutralize muriatic acid by mixing it with a mild base such as sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). Always wear protective clothing such as goggles and thick rubber gloves when working with muriatic acid.

Great idea! How did you dispose of the acid water?
You can neutralize the acid with a lot of baking soda and then just pour it down the drain.
edit: make sure to add the baking soda slowly though, so it doesn't bubble up too much. dissolving it in some water would help. definitely try to do it outside too, for fresh air.
Nice video, following.
Hi any suggestions how I could safely use this on the floor? I'm worried about getting rid of the fumes/residue from my home.
@@SophiaSaysDIY😫 any suggestions?
I removed tiles from the floor (pry them off) then did this technique.
I have plastic stuck on marble - like a hessian backing - can l remove it with this?
I have only used this on Ceramic Tile.
Do the back of the tiles really need to be "like new" or could you just reset the tiles into a new thick bed of mortar?
I have never tried it. If you are successful please let us know.
Will this work on marble tile without damaging ?
Rosanne Lara Hi Rosanne, I have only used it on Ceramic tile (like in the video). Due to marble’s predisposition to scratches, etching, and stains, I would try it on a test piece.
Question for anyone ❓ ❓ Hey, has anyone ever tried this on marble? ❓ ❓
SophiaSaysDIY thank you for the info !
Will this method damage Mexican Talavera tile? It was hand painted, then fired to a glaze and looks like ordinary ceramic tile.
Hi Renee, I have only used it on Ceramic Tile. Do a test piece, if you are considering this. A piece you don’t care about. Let us know what happens.
@@SophiaSaysDIY Thanks. It is ceramic tile.
@@hazelrowan2604 I have some Talavera tile too. Did it work for you? I'm interested to find out. If not, I may give it a try.
Double soak your tiles: Soak over night in 1/2 gallon of muriatic to 4 gal of water. Wire brush and rinse then soak again and brush. 99 - 100% clean.
I love her elementary style narration
There really was something serene about her narration, it got rid of my corona anxiety
Hello. Will this work on any tile?
I have only used this on Ceramic Tile
With this work on the floor to remove thin set?
I have never used it on the floor ☹️. If you do, please let us know how it went. 😃
How do you dispose of the acid after you're done?
It may vary depending on where you live. Contact your local hazardous waste disposal facility. Or check out this website www.myperfectpool.com.au/how-to-dispose-muriatic-acid-safely.html
You can neutralize it with baking soda which will turn HCl into NaCl which is salt.
@@NwoDispatcherreally? Imma do that then
What was the amount of water did you do this 50/50
As you can see at 02:06 in the video I used a 40 lb plastic bucket and it is filled 3/4 with water. Depending on the type of tile, you want to do a test tile first.
I came back the next day and the tiles completely dissolved. Gone. Nothing in the acid.

.but seriously thanks
Gonna try this
Ohhh, sounds like you used too much for your type of tile.
😡
@@SophiaSaysDIY thanks for responding. I just went out and got some to try this please read all the way to the end of my post. It was a silly joke. Sorry and thanks
AAA always add acid
Don't forget to neutralize the acid with Baking Soda in water. Some materials will absorb the acid and prevent a good bond when reused. JMHO
I used this method and had fantastic results. It took a couple of day because the mortar was very thick in places. I ended up using about 3/4 of a gallon of Muriatic acid. After I got them clean I soaked them in Bicarb and was surprised at how much fizzing was taking place. I let them soak in that overnight and now they look brand new! Great video! Thank you.
@@GarysBBQSupplies
Can I use this method with marble tiles?
@@onlythetruth883 I am afraid the acid will eat the limestone in the marble as fast as it eats the grout. So I'm sorry to say. No.
@@GarysBBQSupplies
Thanks. I kinda figured.
Could I use latex gloves?
TheJanicetunes I wouldn’t do it. Check out this web site for more information. www.doityourself.com/stry/10-muriatic-acid-safety-tips
No
PE will do fine
When was this recorded, 1983?
Why mix and not use straight acid?
PakmeiGen6 Straight acid might damage the tile.
followed your "fix" however it has seemed to take well over a week? and still does not come off like your video shows. oh well
So why add acid to water and not the other way around ??
AL Teese If you add water into concentrated acid, the heat will go into the still very concentrated acid. This can cause it to fume, spatter or even boil - giving off corrosive fumes and droplets.
If you add acid into water, the heat is absorbed by the water which just warms slightly but remains un-reactive.
Wow, and I thought so the water doesn't splash the acid up accidentally.
Water does not work
The new tile sell here 60 cent each
Blah blah blah
