I am totally with you on your final ten minute tangential summary of why you play. I watch your videos to feel those emotions and I avoid shredders, because technique like that leaves me emotionally cold. I was a vocalist and played acoustic guitar in the Catalan Rock Band (Pere Flipat) in the late 1980s. Our guitarist probably only knew a couple of scales, but in rehearsal or performance his solos could make me weep.
This video combined with me having my “Guitar Chords Encyclopedia” open on the bed unlocked chord formations for me. I am forever thankful for how much you’ve taught me on guitar. I really don’t think I would’ve stuck with guitar if it wasn’t for you and John Frusciante.

Man youre so inspiring ! I've been playing guitar about 10 years and get stuck many times. At last i found something that keep me busy and grow musicaly... CZcams is full of courses of songs or pentatonic "sh*t", but that gets you nowhere. This is the way ! Mess around with progressions and play both rhythm and fill leads !!!

I like towards the end when your telling all of us that you think your not there yet with your guitar playing even though we could all disagree with that but ...i feel your emotions and connect with your soloing....i love putting in some ear buds and turning off all the lights and closing my eyes to your solos dave....for me it takes me to a different deminsion and not just the soloing either but also the little drum beat machine thing you play with, your totally painting a picture over the beat while complementing the beat itself, im curious to see you play some bass guitar one of these days and how to use it properly with a guitar and drum beat....and after watching so many of your videos and being a long time fan of your channel i have definitely noticed that you have a signature mark with your music, i cant really express it with theory but i notice you have this signature go to lick thats all yours and no one elses and its taken and used from all the chord progressions you have expressed in this video....i definitely have a good listening ear and i wish i could express your signature lick or go to thing but i cant, ill just hold it close and let someone else explain it....how to play like dave Simpson????

Hey dave jeff here you dont know me i live in bc canada and i think were around the same age im 35 born in may of 1988 love your playing your really good i mostly play a gibson les paul into a clean amp with overdrive pedals in front end of a mesa mark v 35 1x12 combo i recently bought a ds-2 and swollen pickle great on their own but together they nail the slane intro solo tone with a bit of reverb and of coarse a strat with single coils i like the bareknuckle mothers milk pickups and for les paul bareknuckle the mule pickup set cheers dave jeff from bc canada!!!
Only been playing 4 years I still take lessons my teacher is jazz , I also use your videos the one on the fret board helped me a lot turned a light on for me

I dont play alot of electric guitar, i am definitely in love with johns solo acoustics and love covering everything from niandra all the way up to some of his electronic music, but also doing my own thing as well because that style is what i connect too and i have my go to signature thingy as well with these progressions.....i want to start playing the electric guitar more, i know how to play well and come up with simple melodic runs but i haven't put no where near the amount of time practicing solos than i have practicing that old john sounding acoustics thats so simple and rewarding for me inside, it just makes me feel good inside and i enjoy using my voice as a instrument with it. Im sure you've seen all of johns live solo acoustic shows and man......thats what i really love.....but im starting to get this itch in my heart to wanna pick up the electric guitar more and more and dedicate myself to it because you've given me that itch in my heart by watching and listening to all your solos...not because of john but because of you Dave.....thank you very much

And my biggest inspiration is Jimi Hendrix...By the way I've seen the Chilli Peppers 3 times in Chicago in the late 80s early 90s also in 2015...Chilli Peppers were also inspired by Hendrix....but my man for the past 5 years Ive been playing my guitar everyday, I cant put it down and its great to hear that someone else feels the same... There are some musicians in bands that have no musicianship and its a competition ... so I don't gig with people like that anymore... And thx for the videos man

I would say the most iconic and original use of this Dm progression is on Soul to Squeeze, where he also uses Gm at the end. In general this progression is overused in popular songs nowadays, but the way he creates melody around those is not usual repetition. The Am-F-C-G for Don't Forget Me, the verse melody with reverb, is making it special even though the progression itself is popular. Lot to learn from him on conceptual level.
