R.C. Sproul: Can We Enjoy Heaven Knowing of Loved Ones in Hell?

  • This message is from our 2010 National Conference, Tough Questions Christians Face: • Tough Questions Christ...
    Many of the toughest questions Christians face from skeptics involve the doctrine of eternal punishment and hell. But it is not only unbelievers who ask questions about hell. Many Christians have unbelieving loved ones who have died, and they wonder how they can enjoy heaven knowing that their loved ones are in hell. In this lecture, Dr. R.C. Sproul helps Christians understand what the Bible has to say about this deeply troubling question.

    The hardest part is knowing that I didn’t ask for God’s guidance in selecting a mate, nor did I prioritize finding a Christian mate, instead I completely disregarded this part. I raised my kids with little to no spiritual guidance although I was raised in church. Now I see the error of my ways and I have turned back to God and rededicated myself to Him through Jesus Christ. My children, however, are closed minded atheists. I’m haunted by the fear of their eternity.

      Of course here on earth truth is mixed with error and or twisted to fit the agenda of men. Joseph Smith was an evil man. That can be easily verified by historic accounts. He took his friend's wife. That man left him of course. Many such things are true about him. If you love God, you will be pursued by truth, truth will find you🎉. Right now, I pray for the salvation of my kids and family. When we are in heaven it says something like, "there will be no more tears and pain for the memory of the former things will pass away." Meaning, I think, any memory of former things and people we loved that are in Hell, God will erase from us. I cannot comprehend how I can rejoice knowing my daughter, granddaughter, grandson and my son are not in heaven. I could not have peace. The most awesome thing is that we will be with Jesus, that is all I care about. Thank you.

      Yes, in the prescence of the glory of God our Lord Jesus Christ in in the glorified state that only Jesus can give us there will be no sin, the former things will be no more, everything made new, when we are born agsin we are made new in spirit but we still have our old body and old nature which is opposed to the Holy Spirit who comes to dwell within us. When we are resurrected to be with Jesus we will be changed, the mortal will become immortal, these mortal bodies will become immortal, we will pass from death to life eternal, that is why in the book of Romans, we are told "that the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord". Death and sin no longer has power over us. Let us pray and ask Jesus to change us to become more like Him constantly because He sacrificed his life on the cross for us, God so loved the world,that he gave his only son, so that whosoever believes on him shall not perish but have eternal life John 3:16.

    Amen brother. After a life of amazingly good health, I had--at the age of 44, a horrible car accident. Now at the age of 70, I've endured years of surgeries, hospital visits, medications, and mind-blowing pain. I have kept on going, as a single mother, no longer able to drive, often with money worries, having to stop working at a productive job which I enjoyed, to someone who can barely walk. In the beginning of this painful journey, I had no doubt that God would heal me. Now I am grateful to grasp any amount of comfort I can from the Lord. My conclusion is that it takes far more faith to live without the miracle, than to live with the miracle.

    “…Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”(Genesis 18:25)and we know the answer to that: Always. I find great comfort in that fact, as I grieve the death of my precious adult son, my youngest child, who recently died, the day before my 72nd birthday, from accidental fentanyl overdose. Only God really knew his heart, so only He knows where my son is. I have to give my thoughts on that to the Lord, for I cannot bear them. I lost my dear adult daughter, my oldest child, 9 years ago to brain cancer(glioblastoma), but her faith in Christ was obvious, not only in the way she lived, but also in the way she lived while facing death. While I mourn her deeply also, I can celebrate where she is now. I find great comfort in Sproul’s message on this subject. BUT when we go to heaven, we'll have a whole other and much, much BIGGER reality before us. There will be no more worldly concerns of any kind. No more tears. Only the Joy of the LORD forever. Justice, righteousness, and truth will override any inclination to weep, regret, or worry.

      @WhatTruthIs Před 2 lety +4

      If you tell a man that God is demanding no good works of him whatsoever, no religious observances or church ordinances, that God is not asking him to undertake any duties at all, but that God invites him to believe a glad message that his sins have already been dealt with at the Cross, and that God expects him to believe this good news and be exceedingly happy about it. If you tell an unsaved man such a story at this, he is astonished and overwhelmed-yet this is the Gospel!
      Our Apostle, Paul, reveals the following great doctrines;
      1. The unrighteousness before God of all men.
      2. The impossibility of justification by works before God- that is, of any man’s attaining a standing of righteousness before God by anything done by him. Do what a man may, he is a condemned sinner still.
      3. The fact and the Scripturalness of righteousness on the free gift principle-that is, of Divine righteousness, separate from all man’s doings, conferred upon man as a free gift from God.
      4. Propitiation-that satisfaction of God’s Holy Nature and law for man’s sins rendered by Christ’s blood.
      5. Reconciliation-the removal by Christ’s death for man of that obstacle to righteousness which man’s sin had set up between God and man.
      6. The plan of the actual conferring of the gift of righteousness upon all who believe, without any distinction. This change of a sinner’s standing before God, from one of condemnation to one of righteousness, is called Justification. Negatively, it is deliverance from guilt on account of Christ’s shed blood and deliverance out of the old creation by identification in death with Christ on the Cross. Positively, it is a new standing in the risen Christ before God.
      7. Redemption-the buying back of the soul through the blood of Christ from sin; from the curse of the law-even death, involving exclusion from God under penalty; from the "power of death," which involves the hand of the enemy; and from all iniquity.
      8. Forgiveness-the going forth of Divine tenderness in remitting the penalty for sin in view of the blood of Christ trusted in, and in complacency and fellowship to creatures who before were necessarily under Divine judgment.
      9. Remission of sins-that is, the actual removing of transgressions or trespasses from the sinner, so that for all time and eternity his sins shall not again be upon him.
      10. Identification-(see above, Justification). The great fact that those who are in Christ were united with Him at the Cross by God’s sovereign inscrutable act and were crucified with Christ and buried with Him, so that their history is now ended before God. And when Christ was raised up as the Firstborn of the new creation, they also were raised up with Him and their history began as new creatures in God’s sight in Christ, the Last Adam.
      Of course, in the experience of the Christian there comes a time when he is actually made partaker of this new life-that point of time when he is, as we say, saved, or converted, or born again, etc. Nevertheless, the life that is in every Christian came up out of the Tomb, and it is in Christ Jesus that a man is created anew.
      11. Incorporation-This tremendous doctrine Paul alone mentions, and he makes it practically the foundation of all his exhortations to the saints with regard to their conduct and life. By "incorporation" we mean the fact that all those who are really saved and are new creatures in Christ Jesus become members of one organism (called "the Body of Christ"), which is more real than the very earth we tread upon-Christ Himself in Heaven being the Head of this Body and every real Christian a member of it. So that believers are thus members of Christ in Heaven and also members one of another here on earth. No wonder Paul is able to exhort the saints to love one another when they are members one of another! (Rom. 12; 1 Cor. 12; Eph. 4).
      12. Inhabitation-The wonderful fact that the Body of Christ and each member of it individually is inhabited, indwelt, by the Holy Spirit Himself, and not only so, but that the Church is being "built together" as a great temple of God so that in the future God’s actual eternal dwelling place will be this wonderful, mysterious company built into a building called "a holy habitation of God in the Spirit."
      This mystery is a great and marvelous one-the fact that we are saved, are partakers now of the life of the Lord in glory, that the Holy Spirit indwells us.
      13. Divine Exhibition-That is, that through the Church in the ages to come is to be made known that which God counts His "riches," even His Grace (Eph. 2:7, @).
      Paul in his wonderful revelation declares that God hath reconciled the world to Himself; that God was in Christ (at the Cross) reconciling the world unto Himself (2 Cor. 5:19).
      Men do not know this, but they conceive that something stands between them and God before God will accept or forgive them.

    I have wondered, for some time, if we will even know that loved ones are not in heaven with us! My Biblical basis for that position is Rev. 21:5. If "all things" are to be "made new", does not this include the memory?! I will be surrounded by fellow-believers, with whom I shall enjoy a relationship of the highest purity - but I shall not know who they were in this mortal life. That suggests to me that I shall not know the eternal fate of my loved ones. I am no R.C.Sproul; I am no Dr Gerstner; but this certainly helps me!
    May I also share the words on a little plaque that I made? "In this life, I shall never be sinless; but, by the grace of God, I may sin less!" That is sanctification.

I am sure we were ALL there - and Praise God we now know His truth. The majority who have passed, and will continue to pass, are on that broad way that leadeth to destruction. Sadly, they never found, or will find, the narrow way that leadeth unto life. God's word says nothing about resting in peace for those who have died their physical death and rejected the free gift of eternal salvation God offers to each and every one of us. On the contrary. Eternal torment. Separated from God they will be for all eternity.
      Be bold, brothers and sisters in Christ... tell your loved ones and others the Gospel - the good news (the best news anyone could ever receive), that Christ paid it all! He said "It is finished!"
      1 Corinthians 15:1-4
      1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
      2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
      3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
      4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

      True enough. The Word of God has the real explanation. A second body and soul is destroyed in hell fire per Matthew 10:28, for the wicked in death are per Psalms 49:20 in that it is the end of them. Sure there is gnashing of teeth and weeping for they get a second body and their soul exists till they are thrown into a lake of fire, but nobody stands before Yahweh 10,000 years after the judgment thinking grandma is still burning.
      We see the judgment of the wicked and guess what, if it was eternal that would be a long show to watch. Hell was made for the devil and his angels.
      The humans never ate of a tree of life that they would live forever. Yahweh was wise in the Garden of Eden. The promise of sin was death and they all die. Without a spirit of life unless you've eaten from the tree of life like a fallen angel you only see how good the body could have been and then Matthew 10:28 happens.

      The reality is there is only one verse in the whole Bible about eternal torment. It is the verse in Revelation about the judgment of the devil and his angels. Hell was made for the devil and his angels.
      I believe all the unsaved will be cast into a lake of fire, but the destruction of the world trade center means you can't find the two original towers anymore. I would like to suggest the destruction of the second body and the soul in hell fire per Matthew 10:28 means you can't find the humans in hell. Their life ended in hell fire with weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
      Yet 10,000 years from now when you stand before Yahweh you don't have to worry about your unsaved grandma, cause the Bible is true.

      @@biffalobull2335, the fallen angels work to make sure humans lose eternal life and they have stood in the presence of Jesus for a long time before they began that work, so they are worthy of eternal torment per Revelation 20:10 but an illiterate prophet never existed and his beast system does not exist in hell other than the possessed Muslims said Shahada so I suppose those who are willing to submit themselves to Allah (Lucifer/Satan) who are angels will exist in hell and so Islam will indeed be there for eternity.
      Since there is no other passage about eternal torment, might I suggest that though there is weeping and gnashing of teeth and their soul and their second body which will be perfect and feel great will utterly be destroyed in hell fire. So it won't be good, but we can watch the judgement of the unsaved and then proceed on with life in heaven never having to worry about our unsaved grandma or otherwise from family or friends again.

      If you would only read Romans 5:13, you would know that...
      "Where there is no (Old Covenant) Law, sin is not taken into account."
      This of course means that salvation was only needed by those who had sin taken into account, which is not us today.
      Psst...the Old Covenant Law passed away in AD 70 as Matthew 5:18 states.
      How about Matthew 15:24, where Jesus the Christ said, "I only came for the lost sheep of the house of Israel." That's no one alive today
      Don't forget Hebrews 9:15. "Redemption was only for those who sinned under the first covenant."
      Only the ancient Israelites were given the first covenant. That again, is not us today.
      Ohhh...there's more.. Galatians 4:4-5 - "Jesus came only to redeem those under the (Old Covenant) Law."
      Again, only the ancient Israelites were given the Old Covenant Law & the New Covenant per Psalm147:19-20, Amos 3:2, Jeremiah 31:31&33 and Romans 9:4, Hebrews 8:8 & Hebrews 9:15.
      The Bible is the story of Yahweh's fulfilled plan of redemption given exclusively to ancient Israelites cursed with the Old Covenant Law of sin and death and pertains to no one alive today.
      Today's self-appointed "Christians" have been hoodwinked into believing they're sinners under a law that passed away....and need a savior who said he came for someone else...who will save them from a sin that's already been removed ...and a judgement that already happened...and allow them into covenant that was made with someone else.
      The fact is we today were never and are not part of ancient Israel's redemptive narrative. ~Michael Bradley
      Hijacking & inserting yourself into ancient Israel's exclusive and fulfilled redemptive narrative is psychotic.

What’s more he used scripture, in context, without proof texting, to explain something to me I never thought I would find an answer for (well at least in this mortal life) That point about not just our justification, even our sanctification but our being changed into God’s Glory, uniting with Jesus fully that everything makes sense, all is new, all sorrow, all grief, all pain is gone, really helped me to see the truth. "the day will come where I will be so concerned about the glory of God and of Jesus, that I will be able to rejoice in His judgments!" Rest In Peace Mr. R.C. Sproul"

      I love you so much, that I will justify to your family members in heaven why you deserve eternal damnation. They will look down on you and feel righteous as you burn and anguish. You will look up at the family you love and "loves you" and while they inhabit perfect peace and enrichment by their surroundings, you will squirm and cry through the looking glass while they feel no empathy, no remorse, no regret, just neutrality and passive comfortability with your punishment, because God thinks its Just, and he's going to share his mind, and fill in all the blanks for them, so they'll have a complete understanding of why its cool that you're suffering forever in a place with no time.

      What Sproul and many ministers do not grasp is that there belief in a God who would literally burn people alive forever is not taught in the Bible. Anywhere. How many times did Paul mention hell in his writings ? zero. The lake of fire is the 2nd death. Not eternal torment. Many still teach the practice of Moloch worship where children were burned alive.
