  • Chess is always fun when you play the Philidor Defence. Today, I play against a 1700 rated opponent where I play slowly and methodically to win a pawn, and eventually, the entire game. Hope you all enjoy!

    Your chess videos helped me get sober. Started focusing more on playing chess and less on drugs and your videos on the Philidor helped me get started with an easy opening that works well against anyone.

    Thanks very much - I play the Philidor every day as black. I have always had trouble with the f3 by white. You did a fantastic job explaining what it was all about and how best to deal with it. Much appreciated!

    Thanks for these games! I keep going back to the Philidor. Good enough for Nimzovich, Bronstein, and yourself and me too. When I see people at my strength playing the most popular opening and gambits, it's like watching the unfortunate, soon to be permanent inmates of the La Brea Tar Pits thrashing about.
    The theme of the queenside attack has less 'romance', but that means many opponents will not be prepared for it. The power of the deceptively passive move.
    Instructive as ever.

      "it's like watching the unfortunate, soon to be permanent inmates of the La Brea Tar Pits thrashing about." LOL! I love queenside attacks and you're absolutely right, people aren't prepared against one!

    This is great. I’m starting to learn more this Philidor(ish) opening. I want to learn more positional playing.
    Did you know the book ’Sergio Trigo Urquijo - The Modernized Philidor Defense’ is coming out 14th of Sep?
    I might get it.

    Hello I very much enjoy your videos and especially your philidor series thank you! Question - have you played the philidor endgame version at all and, if so, what are your thoughts? Decent chances but too boring? Do you play 3 ... Nbd7 instead of 3 ... e5 just to avoid this line?

    • @SLChessDevelopment
      @SLChessDevelopment  Před 2 lety +3

      You got it! I don't like trading into the endgame. Now, is it bad, no, definitely not but it's harder to win with less pieces on the board.
      One of the reasons I play the Philidor is because it keeps many pieces on the board allowing me to create plans better than my opponents. If I know what to do with the pieces I have better than my opponent... I can win! When trading into an early endgame though, it's just harder to.
