  • Steve Phillips is one of THE great British blues players.
    Simple.
We all know he sold Mark Knopfler the famous Romeo and Juliet National guitar from Brothers in Arms.
But, for me it’s more important that he’s also one of the great guitar builders and luthiers.
He and wife GUITARKES took in my (Robert Johnson spec) 1929 Gibson L-1 for some work.
Let’s road trip to The Grosvenor Hotel in Robin Hoods Bay for his Tuesday night residency and show you around the Yorkshire Coast while collecting the guitar.
It’s a beautiful and historic place and our foreign friends often message to say they love the video footage of Britain.
Also, do contact Kate via GUITARKES on Facebook for repair work.
    They’re great!

Hello! I found your channel while I was trying to find comparisons between new and vintage national. Then I saw Steve. I met him many times 10/15 years ago. Wonderful musicial, real gentleman. Nice to see him in shape. Thanks man, your channel is very useful and your playing is very very nice. Greetings from Italy 😀

I used to jam with Steve weekly around 1990/91 and saw Brendan Croker at Robin Hood's Bay at the time. Steve taught me the acoustic version of Knopfler's 'When It Comes To You' that he said was Chet Atkins influenced, along with plenty of old classics by Robert Johnson and others. He introduced me to Eddie Lang. Steve has been a big influence on my studies and home recording. I must catch up. Been loving your channel for years, by the way! Thanks.

They get small views and destroy our algorithm compared to lessons and buyers guides but it’s nice to document these things and the small number that watch seem to get lots out them.

You should check out the Time Jumpers. They’re similar to Steve in that they do a residency but in Nashville. Their records are good though and they have some big names pop in to play sometimes.

Vince Gill plays with them when he’s not touring and free on a Monday night.
Mark Knopfler’s producer and keyboard player Guy Fletcher raves about them

Enjoyed watching, thanks for sharing. Was the guitar work purely cosmetic? Interested to know what sort of finish would have been applied back in the day, i.e. french polish/shellac or whatnot as I'm doing a course just now which takes that in, albeit it's furniture-centric, not guitar-centric.

I believe it’s shellac varnish over the sunburst stain that was originally applied with a cloth.
As the video says, the frets were tidied and the bridge glued as it started cracking.
So, wren you see the guitar before and after you’ll see it looks much more tidy now but it’s kept the dings and wear.
      It’s 100% tasteful.
No tacky refinish that looks factory new on an old guitar.
      He’s done great work.

@@TheWashboardResonators I think it was your using the word melted that made me think of french polish (shellac) as when we're using that, you put layers and layers on top of each other, with later layers mixed with increasing levels of methylated spirits which causes the layers to melt into each other.
Btw, I have c.'37 L-50 too - had seen your video on yours a while back. 🙂
