When they get that bad, I've found the best way to do it is to fill the engine with gasoline, let the car run in neutral till the car is to operating temperature. The gas breaks down the sludge. Once it's warmed up to operating temperature, throw a lit match through the intake as you shove the car out into the street.

Sad to see a newer car treated like this. I think using the old style transmission fluid is the way to go. Reminds me of when I bought a used 1979 Celica GT in 1987 to drive back and forth to work. The original owner had done 3 or 4 oil changes in 8 years. Surprisingly the car ran pretty good. The 20R engine was bullet proof. A trusted old mechanic told me what to do to clear some of the sludge. I drained the oil, changed the oil filter, added 2 quarts cheap oil and 3 quarts of cheap type F transmission fluid. I drove it around for a couple of hours, not revving the engine. Drained the oil and was amazed at the chunks of sludge that came out. I did this once more in a month. I ran cheap oil in the car for the next 3 years. I was told that ATF had high levels of detergents. In 1990 I traded it in for a new Isuzu pickup. Keep the content coming!

With ATF you have to be patient. It takes longer than a chemical flush or using diesel fuel as it doesn't remove as much too soon. You don't want to clog up your oil screen. Method you used works. What I do is drain oil add a new oil filter and run 4 quarts of ATF on idle for 20 minutes. Drain it, add new engine oil and oil filter. Next oil change to be done @ 1000 miles since you have some oil residue. 3rd oil change you can repeat your method. I use regular non synthetic ATF. I purchase it @ Walmart for about $19. For 1 gallon.
FYI: 73 days is too long. Half a quart is to be ran for 300-400 miles. 1 quart for about 100- 200 miles. The more ATF you use, the less you drive it. Your method is good in order to build up oil pressure while driving.

My dad purchased a Honda crv that was gunked up beyond belief. Believe it or not, he dumped oven cleaner into it and ran it for about 15 minutes just idling and when he took the valve cover back off, the top end was extremely clean. He ran 3 quarts of oil with 1.5 quarts of oven cleaner. Can’t say what it did to the gaskets in the engine but it was clean! And he drove it for four more years afterwards with no problems.

I use Marvel Mystery about every 3rd change, I'll typically add 3/4 of a quart and drive it 2 weeks before I change to oil. Tough to say because I would never let my crankcase get sludgy to begin with, MMO does have a stellar reputation though.

I worked on an engine like that. I'd be nervous about using a flush with chunks like that. I used a shop vac and picks and screwdrivers to gently detach the junk and sucked it up. I cleaned it as best as I could and with regular oil and filter changes its still going strong and the lifter tick it had is gone too 👍

Had a jeep wrangler in early 2000s with the inline 6. It was driving like a slug wouldn't even do hwy speeds 100km here.
Was about 175000km on odometer when I decided to seafoam it. I poured the whole can into the crankcase Immediately noticed a huge difference when driving was like new feeling i dumped the oil while hot as per manufacturer instructions and the sludge chunks and black gunk thick as molasses came out like you wouldn't believe. Was my first seafoam experience and it went so well I have a strong opinion on it now.

900 ml with Diesel, plus acetone and ATF 1/3 of each. It will speed up some. Do a flush with it and the use as additive by 10% for the next 2 oil change intervals afthe the pure flushing. I've also tried 700 ml of gasoline and 100 ml of dish wash detergent giving a decent in a 15 minutes quick cleaning.

  • @RetroCaptain

I would only pour one bottle worth in and drive as usual for a week or two then change it and gradually cleans off the scum.
If you fill the engine it possibly could wash off large amounts of the scum and have it jam up important galleries.
My first car had a basically 6litre engine which was a bit neglected by the previous owner. I think he drove short distance and didn't change more often like you're supposed to leading to a little scum.
What I did was buy Quaker State high detergent fleet oil by the case and changed it in half the time you usually do. I opened the filters up after to see how they went from flakes down to dust size particles to almost nothing.
After a year or two it was sparkly clean.
I also tried Wynns Valve Lifter (i forgot what the entire name was. Cleaner i think. It was a clear solution that poured like fuel and smelled like varsol.
It helped a little but not as much as the early changes did.
I read a few books back then
The best one was by Robert Appel
    "The Used Car Owners Handbook"
He or one of the authors suggested sticking to one brand of oil, not always trying different brands and what is the absolute cheapest. Different additives all the time don't help.

Honestly you run more of a risk trying to clean that severe of engine sludge. Light layered yogurt sludge is okay, but that car to clean it will take a hot tank. When i was young and ignorant to engine cleaning. I had someone tell me to run engine cleaner in an old chevy 350. Long story short it made the engine sieze up due to heavy hardened sludge plugging up the oil ways. Never did that again. Tranny fluid non synthetic for LIGHT soft sludge is okay as long as you change the filter after a drive, then after a week of driving change the oil and see if it needs to be repeated. I personally wont do them anymore especially on newer cars, to dangerous and costly with all the tiny oil passagways. Do the oil change and ship it.

All of your top line oils have detergents in them. Even your premium fuels have detegents in them. What you want is a hot engine and high detergent levels. You can dump diesel fuel into the engine and run it at idle for 30 mins or the same thing with ATF Fluid, or do a half and half of atf and oil, do not drive the car but let it idle. Could probably even let it rev around 2500-3000 to help increase oil pressure and how much oil is being slung around to clean everything.

Yes, there is a huge difference between "conventional" and "synthetic" oil, ATF.
brake fluid, etc. Some substitute silicone-based brake fluid for conventional,
then ruin their entire braking system.
This engine needs serious help. 91 octane gasoline poured into valvetrain,
brushed around, mopped up with red oil rags. Coat hanger wire pushed into
drain holes. Valve cover rinsed & brushed & rinsed. Oil pan same.
_Then_ you can run a quart of ATF for a while & drain. Non-ethanol gasoline
is what drag racers wash parts in. It will not hurt anything. The chunks
and grit must be removed first.

    • @jayslabotsky462
      @jayslabotsky462 Před 2 lety

Conventional vs synthetic ATF makes no difference in this context. It's the detergent package, not the hydraulic oil itself, that makes ATF useful for some degree of cleaning. The comparison to brake fluid makes no sense at all. Apples and oranges. Synthetic ATF and engine oil are made to be direct replacements for conventional, where silicone brake fluid (DOT 5) is not and is clearly labeled as such. There should be no confusion on this if one simply reads the label.

First, I don't think it's good to leave anything in there long term. The sludge is from oil abuse, specifically not changing oil soon enough. I would Seafoam or product like it. You'll use it next time here wants an oil change, put it in, drive or run engine as directed, and change oil, heavy sludge will take a while to clear it all out. DO NOT USE GASOLINE! Except as a spot solvent. That much sludge you're looking at clogging oil galleries if you don't go slow, so may be regular ATF is the way to go.

The claim that ATF synthetic or conventional, has a lot of detergents is that, a myth. Transmissions are hydraulic machines that do not see combustion blow-by, high temps, acids, and sludge as engine do. They are actually low viscosity, hydraulic fluid with low amounts of detergents. Perform a double oil change to get rid of 100% of the old oil. 10-20% of oil will remain after a normal oil change, especially those ECOTEC engines. Then use Amsoil 100% synthetic Signature Series oil, 0W-40 oil. It has a high amount of detergents and will safely and slowly clean your engine. Dont worry about the sludge sitting on top of your engine. This does not adversely affect your engine. Looks like the engine was neglected for a long time. Use a high qaulity filter, oil and change every 3k. Also clean those VVT solenoids too. This requires strong chemicals and high pressure or physical contact, like they use in a machine shop.
