    Part -3 The coming of American Dominance
    This first part of this 3 part series places heavy focus on two of original powerhouses
    at MIA budding jet age, Pan Am (Pan American World Airways) and National Airlines. Pan Am dominated the gateway
    to Latin and South America with flights to every capital down south and flying every
    aircraft in the fleet from MIA. Miami based National Airlines had it’s main base of
    operations here. National’s very cool logo, the Sun King, was seen across the northern
    US as the way to get to Florida, the number one vacation spot for northerners! It was
    The east coast’ Vegas back then but it came with stunning beaches definlng the word
    - relax! In this series are many of carriers seen only at this airport along with National
    and Pan Am. Every US carrier who could get there, came there. And they came ‘heavy’
    bring their largest jet transports, TWA, Delta and others brought there 747s, L-1011s
    and DC-10s here…

    Back then aviation was simple, pure,... flight attendands were so cute and polite...you could smell the sweet scent of fuel right in your nose...you could almost touch the airplanes when they landed, taxied or took off...everything was so cool!! Who does not miss those golden years??? I do...

      I don’t miss people smoking on board and the potential for catastrophic death mid flight.
      Nor do I miss the potential for terrorists to simply check in a bomb and not board the flight ✈️
      So no I don’t miss those days. Today flying is much quicker and safer.

      I grew up during the 60s under the approach of runway 27 of Schiphol Airport, and I was very glad when these old jets with their loudly whining engines and deep rumbling after passing over, got phased out by newer types propulsed by the much less noisy high bypass turbofan engines.

    Miamians, look at 1:21 (the old National Airlines HQ). The facade of that two-story building looks awfully familiar. Sure enough, it's the George T. Baker Technical College, 3275 NW 42nd Ave, Miami, FL -- the one with the Vietnam-era Skyhawk fighter jet parked in the front.

      In the 60s too. I watched the transition from prop to turboprop to jet to fanjet - a lot of fun still vivid in my mind.

      From the early 1970s through 1983, my dad worked for Eastern Air Lines, National Airlines, and then (following the merger of National with and into PAA) Pan American World Airways. Pass-riding heaven. I remember my dad would tell me, when we were sitting in First Class, "you can order as many Cokes as you want to order." LOL.

    As a child I rode on the very first TWA 707 flight from Miami to St Louis. I believe it was around 1960 and although I don't remember much, I do recall that the flight was very loud

    I worked in that eastern hanger for ten years. Used to love watching the airplanes take off and land. Mia had some unique aircraft show up.

    Dad worked for National originally at Jacksonville Imeson Airport and then moved to current JAX International Airport location until Pan Am went bankrupt. National really did have great logo. I appreciate the Southern Airlines shot, as one of dads best friends worked for Southern. I used to go hang out with them and watch these beauties come and go. Nice video!

      Interesting, I came across a clip of 3 National Airlines 727s I wanted to use here, but they were parked at a black/dark concourse which clearly was not Miami. I could not tell which airport it was, then a firetruck came into view labeled 'Jacksonville Fire Dept. I was like, cool a different locale for National should I one day do National at the cities they served video!

      National at one time had over 20 flights a day to JAX.Right before the Pan Am merger National really cut back at JAX down to 6 flights a day and Pan Am did not last long at JAX.National also pulled out of DAB and TLH before the merger.

      It was a real shame during that decline. I still have some of dads old nightly close outs, flight schedules (back before there was a teletype) etc..and a lot of his ramp and gate stuff. Neat old stuff. Funny how we hold on to memories.

      @2trd mustang GT Ford F1 HD SGS Fat Boy my grandad was part of the move for National from JAX (Imeson) to MIA. Heard lots of stories about the Maytag strike and many others.

      @@trafficsignalman yep, dad was a mechanical minded person and he made ends meet repairing cars during the numerous strikes between the airline employees association and the Maytags. Sadly, with pan am, came the teamsters union, they were less than helpful to the former AEA union members. The ending national and later of pan am was a bad time for dad. He never really recovered financially. I believe the Maytags made out very well.

    The L-1011 was my favorite airplane back in the day, it was a wide body behemoth that would rumble down the runway and majestically rise to command the skies! She was an awesome bird! they certainly don't make'em like that anymore!

    Thank you very much for sharing it brings back. Great memories. I was born and raised in Miami and my dad worked for Eastern before they went bankrupt. We knew a lot of people, and it was a real treat to fly back in the day.

    Ex National here, back in the days when an airline career meant something, left the day Pan Am took over, retired after 25 years FEDEX, National was the best company I ever worked for, the old crews were a great bunch, the Stews were gorgeous....

      Both of my parents worked for National Airlines. I loved to go to Miami International Airport with my dad back in the 1970s. I can still smell the diesel, jet fuel and cigarettes.

    Some great footage of MIA from the heyday of jet travel, with lots of old/classic airlines and their planes--thanks! Whenever I see film of passenger jets from the 60's and 70's, I'm always amazed at how smokey/dirty their engine exhaust was compared to today's aircraft.

      Trie, those old smokey jets (just like the first cars) were the pioneers that had to happen to get us to far more ecological friendly jets we fly today....we had to start somewhere and the 19600s, 70s were it!

    I remember as a kid back in the 70s my mom taking me to Honolulu International to watch planes take off and land, the excitement and the energy in the air, words cant really describe it and how much I miss it.

    Alots of memories. I think I was there spotting on some of the footage. When I saw the Iberia DC-10 arrived following an American Airlines 727 I’m sure I was there from the top of the hotel terrace where there were a swimming pool

    Thank you for the memories! I remember every last one of those airlines (yes I’m THAT old) and to this day the B-707 and DC-8 hold a special place in my ❤️. Back then we dressed to travel. It really was something special. On board in First Class, meals were really gourmet and inflight service was stellar. Boy do we need REGULATION of the airline industry again. It was a terrible mistake to get rid of it ... what you have today is sh.t compared to then.

    Came down to Miami from New York City in the late1970s. WOW!! So many memories as a kid growing up in Miami. I completely forgot about Sunshine Airlines, Eastern Airlines at MIA probably had the biggest and busiest hub in the entire U.S.A. Now American Airlines has the largest hub at MIA.

    US had a lot of airlines. To mention some of them Pan Am, National, TWA, Continental, Eastern, America West, USAir, Northwest, Air Tran, ATA, Braniff, Reno Air, Capitol, TowerAir, Southern Air, Western, etc

    This video only deserves thumbs up.....this is historical... although there could be people, still around from those days who may got it a thumbs down because they are still mad at the airport because the airplanes were allot noisier back then and if they lived near the runways, they had to endure a quick earthquake like experience evrytime an airplane flew overhead.....that was just a fact back then...the first generation jets were super loud...
    Many of us enthusiasts loved the smoke and noise because it seemed so cool especially if you were a kid at the time,..but home owners near the airport complained constantly....if any of the readers here remember watching the movie "Airport 1970", you see a family sitting down to dinner and praying suddenly, the walls started shaking and things started falling from the shelves as a Boeing 707 tookoff over their neighborhood.....it is funny but sad at the same time.
    This video deserves only thumbs up because it is excellent....
    That is my opinion and I welcome yours..

    I remember in the 80s being at LAX and watching the Delta L1011 pulling right up to the gate and the glass window, what an awesome sight it was, such a rush.....those days are long gone.

      @@Starboard76 I remember flying back as a kid to Hawaii from Panama on a Pan Am 747 and looking down and seeing all that blue ocean and all those puffy white clouds and all that blue sky. I remember flying out of Honolulu on DC 10s with Western Airlines and Continental, boy were those fun times.

      @@ikaikamaleko8370 cool, I luckily score some Pan Am 747 scenes at Panama, I plan to use use it in coming Pan Am 747s everywhere they flew around the World later this year.
      I still have my kid memories of watching out the windows for hours and hours crossing the Pacific to Tokyo. Amazing feeling as a child for sure!

      @@Starboard76 Yep exactly I know that feeling so well. I was a total airplane junkie growing up as a kid, I had models, all the books and studied the engines the cockpit T instrument formations, aerodynamics all that stuff, what a blast to be a kid then.

    I'm watching the last 20 minutes of that thinking Pan Am must have been on their death bed at that stage. Such a shame for such an icon. I'm sure some people know better than me but extraordinary that as soon as Juan Trippe stopped running the airline things really started to go downhill.

      Not that much of a Pan Am expert on their financial misfortune and management, but I do recall their panic as 1978 Deregulation Act kicked in.

      I see some 1973 chevys in the footage and the presence of both National and Pan Am 747s puts it before their merger in 1980, so it may have been tough times fuel-wise and deregulation wise, but Pan Am lived until December of 1991, so they were around for a while after this film was made.

      At 21:38 there is a "flip," there's a definite difference in quality of video going from 1970s to 80s after that. I know because I'm seeing Pan Am logos that I only saw in the 80s and there's other things too.

    Did Eastern even fly to MIA? You wouldn’t know by watching this 42 minute CZcams video. You truly had to work to avoid any Eastern aircraft that weren’t either a) a Lockheed Electra in one part or b) DC-8s in the old school “Fly Eastern Airlines” livery. You even managed to avoid images of their hangars. LOL

    Don’t know much about National Airlines except they went bankrupt in 1980 and was acquired by Pan Am. Unfortunately I never had a chance to be a passenger on L1011, DC 10, 727 or any legendary carriers like Pan Am, TWA, Eastern, Northwest, US Air, etc.

      You’re timing is impeccable, a National DC-10 in Los Angeles comes online tomorrow. I have a National DC-10 ride albeit a short one IAH to MSY - done on purpose just to ride a NA DC-10. But even worse imagine no CZcams to share globally with anyone...they’d just be individual memories. You never got the chance but you get to ‘see’ what once was part of our sensational past.

      My parents worked for National Airlines. They did not go bankrupt. National had paid off all if it's debt therefore there was a bidding war between, Eastern, TWA, Texas International and Pan Am. Unfortunately Pan Am won and they went bankrupt due to incompetent leadership.

    Grew up in Mia. Loved seeing the ol' 720 @ George T. Baker I Graduated from there! I was there the day they shut down le jeune Rd. And brought the first Commercial Transport Aircraft to our School from MIAirfield. My Mom worked for EAL 25 Years retired just before it all went away😢 I worked @ KMIA for 25 Years as an A&P Technician. And I still am only not in Mia but still in Fla.
    Great times in Aviation back then. Im surprised you didn't get a shot of the Concord from Air France of British Airways.

    The DC-7's could have been thought of as "Shark-Jumpers", as the airlines, to a man, dumped their 7's for jets, but kept a few 6's.

    One of the sad moments in National Airlines ERA was the numerous of strikes 🪧 they faced by flight attendants and pilots as well as mechanics. National Airlines they had several crashes and I believe it’s lead to people lose confidence with National Airlines and the ceased operations to merge with Pan American World Airways 😭😢😡

      Nobody lost confidence in National. National Airlines had paid off their last few aircraft and did not have debt. That's why there was a bidding war to buy National. It's sad the jackasses at Pan Am won. Very poor leadership at Pan Am in the 1970s and 80s lead to their downfall and my dad losing alot of his retirement from National because of Pan Am's bankruptcy.

      Man I am trying SO hard to locate just a few seconds of that aircraft it's not funny. I have a few shots of it in the back ground coming up in part 2 or part 3 and I just want to kill the photographer who was looking right at it but busy shooting some seriously mundane nonsense...but then again, I must credit the guy with at least catching that much!

    It was "MACKEY" AIRLINES ! Not "McKay" ! I flew them for years back and fourth from Miami, Ft Lauderdale and West Palm Beach to Freeport Bahamas and Nassau and the Out Islands of The Bahamas. I lived in Freeport at the time. Mackey was a great little airline. Good service and cheap flights !

    As a 35-year A&P IA who worked Heavy C & D Inspections, Maintenance, Repair, Cargo Conversions and Re-Engining on every Boeing, Douglas and Airbus Commercial Jetliner built, from DC-8s to DC-10s and MD-11s, 707s to 767s, and all the junk shit Airbus built: quality and safety-wise: the Boeing 727 is by far the greatest Jetliner ever built, the Douglas MD80 is the second greatest Jetliner ever built, the Boeing 757 is the third best ever built, and the Douglas DC9-30, -40 and -50 are the 4th greatest ever built .. the 737 and the Airbuses are junk compared to these four models ..
