In this video, we'll put the iPhone camera head-to-head with the Sony ZV-1 mark ii and try to decide where it makes sense and where it is unnecessary.

    Thanks for the comparison. I'm not a photographer but I prefer how the image looks from the zv-1, more contrast and natural. I used to think the pictures from phones look great but recently started to find them unnatural and washed out. I'm seriously considering buying the zv-1 for travel instead of upgrading my phone.

    I've been using Sony ZV-1 for about 2 years now. I love the result so much from ZV-1 and it's half the price of the newest iPhone back then. However, many times security would forbid me to record with this camera (but it's ok with phone camera).

I'm very indecisive if I should get it because I really wanted to film some stuff for yt and ig but Idk if I should spend $500 on a camera if my Iphone is better, if it is or not. I have an Iphone 11 pro max, In this guys video It's a 14 pro max, so it makes a diference in comparing the Iphone 14 for the camera. Yes I essentially went and bought a secondhand Samsung Galazy 10plus becuase its video quality is very good and for this reason its stealth mode was great, looking like I was plaing a gaming or something on the top of a stairwell when in fact I was shooting a timeplapse as lots of people walked past assuming they were not being filmed so I got a seamless, the smart phone has become my go to that I rarly use a camera for filming these days, its good enough in in many cases better.

    I’m only a very small (very part-time) content creator, but I’ve gotten almost 500 subs in the past 6 months just using my iPhone 14 pro max. I spent 3 years on a dedicated interchangeable lens camera and got 100 subs.The one thing that gets me in trouble with the iPhone is trying to shoot a specific object beyond 3x zoom, like a duck in the middle of the pond. I just notice the quality breaks down too significantly.

    Hard not too cheat…but I preferred the right most often. I’m guessing it is the iPhone, but hope it is the Sony. Updated: I was correct 😢. One point to emphasize for either is their portability. IMO not having to lug camera gear when out for a hike or in an event is huge unless you are their to do,some professional work…which 99% of people don’t do. And social media like CZcams is very forgiving when it comes to image quality. I’ve seen studio video done with the ZV 1 II vs an A7s3 and could not really see any appreciable difference, though some of that may be great editing.

  • @AllThingsFilm1
    @AllThingsFilm1 Před 11 měsíci +37

    Great comparison. I recently bought a (used $530) ZV-1 after shooting a bunch of test footage with my iPhone as part of my process on whether or not to get the ZV-1. I chose the ZV-1 because I actually had it before and was quite content with its abilities for what it was. The iPhone still has a digital look no matter how much I play with it.
    The ZV-1 still has real bokeh as opposed to the cheesy fake bokeh in the "cinematic" mode of the iPhone. I say cheesy because I've seen many videos where the in-focus background will still randomly creep in along the edge of the subject during a shot. If you recall Apple's own demo video of the "Cinematic" mode, the subjects were not moving around a lot, which helped reduce any chance of breaking the fake bokeh.
    Part of what also made me return to the ZV-1, as a b-cam, was that I know I can use it for shots that don't require a lot of color grading, as well as for my CZcams review videos. Love your content. Cheers.

    • @estacaotech
      @estacaotech Před 10 měsíci

      I also share the same opinion about this, no matter how much I tried to configure my phone, it still got that "digital sharpness" look, even pro mode and other stuff, then I just got the ZV1 and never had this issue before, but honestly nowadays its not very necessary to be honest, most people are watching social media on their phones, so we can at least save a bit of money haha

    • @dougmorato
      @dougmorato Před 8 měsíci

      That was true until 2 weeks ago when Apple released the new iPhone 15 Pros. The new ProRes 10Bit Log settings make the iPhone footages much more cinematic. It gets rid of that annoying over sharpening look. You can also use third party apps to get real RAW photos that look much more like a real camera.
      I’m a ZV-1 and iPhone 14 Pro owner and I feel like Sony missed a huge opportunity when they released this ZV-1 II with pretty much the same specs. Had they released 4K 60, better stabilization and 10bit codec, it’d be an easy choice.

    This was such a great video! I wanted it to be a SLAM-DUNK in favor of the ZV-1. Somehow, I was sure I knew which camera produced which pictures, but I was wrong. My ZS100 has a good zoom and much stronger flash, and I absolutely hate the iPhone / iCloud / iPhoto workflow. For that reason I greatly prefer shooting with my ZS100 with SD card while on vacation. The iPhone flattens the mountains with its wide-angle lens which takes away your chance to brag about your big beautiful mountains. I'd like to see such a comparison with a compact APS-C camera. Does the choice become clearer? Is it worth the upgrade from the ZS100 and do I still get a good zoom...?

      I agree with you, vacation and special events i use my Panasonic DMC-TS5.
      Takes much better pictures, they look "real" and i have better zoom and when i take the picture and look back at it, i can zoom in and see the detail much more crisp where as my phone, as i zoom in, it gets blurry.
      Today 99% are using their phone as their primary picture and video which is sad to me, i rather use my point and shoot, i may look out of place and people look at me and im like, well at least im not part of the collective where all you idiots are using your phone, im using a real camera that takes real pictures 😂

    Nothing can replace a good lens. You can't magically make more light come into the lens without a wider aperture. I own a lot of mirrorless cameras, and I'm looking at the ZV-1 ii for the 18mm at the wide end, but it's still not wide enough. My 17-28mm f/2.8 Tamron lens better, but that cost as much as the ZV-1.

      Apple wants you to use airdrop. Keep you for using iPad or Mac Os. Biggest problem is when your video file over size, the file even can't be found on your PC. It take me a month to find out how to fix the issue.

    I feel like you glossed over the photo image quality aspect because my iphone 14 pro max takes garbage photos. The processing profile on it is horrendous I actually regret upgrading from the 11 pro max. Ive gotten to the point where I take videos and use the white image snapshot button to take photos because it at least looks color accurate. Im also considering a dedicated camera because i hate tying up my phone while I try to film stuff - and same reason i don't want it cluttering up the camera roll on my phone! I probably need it more for photos than I do filming though so really wish this vid didnt gloss over that as it didnt quite sway me one side or the other.

Got it right. 👍🏾 I've got the ZV1 II on order and think it will do well for what I need it for. I like Apple, but rock a droid smartphone [S23 Ultra] and find I use it for B-Roll or if I'm caught short. Like you, I prefer dedicated, so will lean towards phone and separate camera. Oh and I will also say, love the shot of the ZV1 white to black! Exquisite!! 😘🤌🏾

    Smartphones look like they are competing until you start throwing challenging conditions at them, then they quickly fall apart. The worst thing about them is the sharpening and the harsh over processed look, as mentioned at 5:08. It's an instant give away. Then it's HDR and the ashy contrast. I would rather take light clipping but with better colours and better exposed focus subject than alien, ashy looking overall image. For photos, they cannot reproduce artificial light as softly and nicely as dedicated cameras because they stack images with HDR. Cannot match a dedicated camera's 3D pop and soft bokeh because of the lens limitations. Finally, smartphone videos always look harsh in bright sun light because they don't have variable apertures so they have to compensate by increasing the shutter speed to such high speeds that video becomes choppy looking. Stabilization and convenience is much superior on smartphones.

    Even though Sony is the best camera manufacturer out there with top-tier autofocus, low-light performance and tons of relevant AI features, ZV-1 II is not worth it. I would say they should just cancel that line.
    ZV-E10, however, is still an excellent choice because the sensor-size is significantly larger than any phone will be able to match, real bokeh is easier to obtain, you can get much better lens, add filters and truly start getting the semi-pro experience.
    What Sony needs to do is hurry up and release an APSC camera that does 4k 60fps for reasonable price then they’ll have another hit on their hands!

      Or make that line better than they have done it, really bad it dosn´t even have 4K 50p in Europe. I have the original ZV1, and at my holiday i used my Samsung S22 Ultra more to making video because the ZV1 stabilization is very bad years after Canon. and only 4K 25p in Europe make it not smoth when you walking around and filming. And the ZV1 have not the best colors straight out of box when making videos, should even improve here to.

      That is definitely on a per camera basis and depends on your use case. Not being able to see yourself without accessories can be more of a pain to frame yourself and I often found personal mics on iphone have been finicky.
      I would argue gh6, x-s10 or some older flagship cameras are better value unless you need the smallest possible camera. For smaller sensors, the image quality is usually worse and since smartphones usually have better processing it makes sense until you start using larger sensors that have less compromise.

    I would say that the video from the left side is from the Sony camera. I don't know! Maybe I'm wrong! But the stabilization gave me the answer! A freaking phone has better stabilization compared to a dedicated camera for content creators. The camera is better overall but not when it comes to stabilization. The phone gives you better stabilization so that you don't need a gimbal for normal vlogs. :))

When comes to photos my old RX100 mk3 feels more stable when comes to results, but the ZV1 have better low light preformance. 11 pro max is still very good so I wouldn’t spend money on this. I would use that money if you wanted to upgrade your iPhone. Sony ZV 1 is a good camera but too expensive in my opinion. Also stabilization sucks which you have to use special software or a gimbal to stabilize footage. Battery life will require you to buy multiple batteries to last a day if not near a charger.
