- Mood and Atmosphere, two of my favorite words. But what do they mean really? And is there a difference between them? How do we create great mood and atmosphere?

IMPORTANT NOTE: Something i didnt mention (because i was more focused on the actual production and setting the stage) is of course music (or lack of music) which is an incredibly important factor when sealing the deal for Mood and Atmosphere. This, of course, happens during post-production.
And this is why we loved Dave. So informative and very detailed!!! Need a mood and atmosphere shirt....Dave we need Merch
I always appreciate that mood and atmosphere. For me that cool blue lighting always adds to it. Movies like jaws, the thing, the fog, elm st. That all utilize it
What a great video! I love horror but I am an Action guy too! I think First Blood may have some of the best mood and atmosphere out there. A movie you really need to discuss on Two Dudes someday lol! How wet and cold everything feels in First Blood and just like you say Location! The forest shots in First Blood are incredible and they couldn't get lights up there so they managed which works for the film. They used the white hats on the cops as reflectors lol!!
The one cave shot was lit by two matches, so interesting. I love these videos, we love picking your brain, Dave!
Great video! I definitely feel that atmospheric horror tends to age very well.
Agreed.
Honestly I think Halloween '78 & Nightmare '84 are 10/10 with this. Also LOVED your portrayal of Freddy in Dylans New Nightmare. You nailed it
As far as horror films, the setting of Dawn of The Dead has always struck me as great atmosphere for post-apocalyptic film.
Great way to give a simple explanation for two things that exist in tandem. Love hearing these things talked about from the perspective of a producer/director.
its created with the setting, lighting, story, camera angles, actors and directors.. which is why Halloween 1 the original can't be duplicated..everyone has to be on the same page,
Dave, the best! Always great videos my dude!
Great video. Enjoyed listening to this topic and discussion. Cant have a great film without mood and atmosphere.
german expressionism, great examples of mood & atmosphere. nosferatu, m, dr. caligari....
For a more recent example, The Cursed (2021) is ALL mood/tone and atmosphere. Not much happens but what does is compelling.
Also, The Dark and The Wicked from the same year
Awesome video Dave and Definitely agree with you
Christine ❤
more films, especially the horror genre, need to prioritize this.
My favorite non-halloween movie with really good mood and atmosphere is 1408.
Obviously, Halloween I and II and Black Christmas. But other movies with great Mood and Atmosphere are The Hitcher, The Shining, Misery, Nightmare on Elm Street, the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the two remakes, Manhunter, Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, Cape Fear, and Se7en. Some underrated movies with great Mood and Atmosphere include Dreamscape and Switchback. I've always found the first four Friday the 13th movies as well as Part VI: Jason Lives to have great mood and atmosphere, too. There are too many to name, but those are my favorites. 🤔
I think a great atmosphere in film is one that is void of music/score or even dialogue. The Strangers (2008) and even Boogie Nights (1997) have scenes with no music, score or dialogue and it makes it feel real.
Session 9. Even the daylight scenes are often uncomfortable & disturbing.
*First..!* ✌️👽
I liked The House Of The Devil but there was too much time where nothing was really happening.
IDENTITY from 2003 is dripping with mood and atmosphere. Great mystery film. Might be the best mystery/horror film I saw in the theater
Suspiria (referencing the original)
Does Salem's Lot Count . I Feel it throughout the movie or mini Series creepy 😮
