  • Welcome to season three of Maido in a Box! Can you believe it's already been three years? Maido has an interesting box this month with some items we've seen before and others that seem more like random odds and ends.

Thanks for posting unboxing videos of these. I've always been curious about what's in them when I see them at Kinokuniya. How do you personally use a lot of the stuff that comes in these? Or does some of it go unused? Some of the items seem a little overly bougie to me but maybe I just don't understand stationery? lol

Honestly, most of it does go in storage because I don’t have an immediate use for it, often because I’m already using something similar. I usually won’t move on to another notebook until I’ve completely filled one. Clear files usually get used, but I have a ton of them now. Pens very, very rarely get used because I already have a collection of fountain pens that each have a purpose.

What fountain pens do you use?

I have several, perhaps even too many. My go-to for a shirt pocket is a Pilot E95S though for a bag I usually pack a Platinum Century 3776. My primary desk pen is the Platinum PTL-20000H-24-F (aka Kanazawa leaf in the Goldfish design), and my secondary desk pen is a Sailor 1911L demonstrator (aka Transparent Clear/Gold). Other ones I have but don't regularly use include a discontinued Sailor Compass, Platinum Curidas (which no longer works properly), Pilot Prera (my original travel pen), Traveler's Company brass pen (I've since moved to only pens compatible with converters), Platinum Procyon (backup travel pen I try to avoid using because the cap scratches the finish), and a Pilot Metropolitan (my first).

My go to has been my Pilot Decimo. I am debating between a Sailor Pro Gear Slim or another a Pilot. I prefer F/MF but I need smoothness. Do you find the two to have the same level of smoothness?

That I would say depends on the type of nib more than the fineness. I have a 14k UEF (Platinum) that is nice and thin, but very scratchy to write with. I also have an 18k F (also Platinum) that is beautifully smooth. I would say it writes as well as my 21k F from Pilot though. It’s best to test a pen ahead of time if you can in my experience.
