  • Thinkful Coding Bootcamp Review
I invited three Thinkful alumni onto my channel to talk about their experience with the coding bootcamp. We talked about their positives and negatives during their time, as well as advice for future students. Hope you enjoy!

I also took the full time full-stack Engineering Immersion program with their ISA w/ living stipend, graduated july 2021. Overall my experience was pretty negative in terms of the education and their so called unique services (mentor & career services). I would agree the quality of assistance and some of the interviewers was lacking on a whole nother level. The instructors & TAs were amazing all the way around and often they were not informed when changes were made to the curriculumn which often caused confusion among the staff when giving assistance. The careers services was a nightmare with what felt like spam messages everyday with a wall of jobs to apply to that you did not qualify for at all. The ISA finance option is still a nightmare in itself with think ful moving from one sketchy provider to another. Out of my cohort of 45, more than a third of them droped after the 2 months, one person was kicked out without notice, 24 graduated and only 5 people have been able to get a job in Software Engineerng with two of them already having a bachelors in Computer science before they started the program.

@TechRally I would reccomend you do a video interviewing people with the ISA financial option at bootcamps. I recently was an interviewee for research on ISAs for a non profit called FInancing the Future/ Jobs for the future. I talked to them about whats seemed to be a trend of many coding bootcamps onboarding with an ISA option and often they would no longer offer it after a few cohorts such as thinkful. Two months after I started they no longer provided an ISA as a finance option.

I graduated from Thinkful at the end of October 2022. Some of my biggest gripes with the program were how the capstone projects were structured. I wish we were given more time to build these from the ground up, and full-stack, instead of providing either the front-end or back-end depending on which part we were to design/build according to what technologies we had just learned. These repositories do not hold up for long and deployment of these applications break down after some time. While the code that I wrote, whether it's a UI built in React or and Express API, still work in deployment I have had to revisit these applications to redeploy or change the code provided to us to try to get them to continue to work. This has lead to potential employers questioning whether I am capable of engineering and deploying full-stack applications. While I have fixed these issues in the past months, I am at a point now where these projects seem completely useless as when troubleshooting I am receiving ambiguous errors that are extremely hard to track down. They provide these boilerplate projects so that it cuts down on the time for us to develop the application as a whole, but it really hinders the lifespan of these applications and they eventually break down; not to mention the lack of unit and integration tests in some of these provided repositories. I now only have 2 of the 5 applications I worked on during my time at Thinkful, actually working as full-stack applications.
To speak to the careers support, it is absolutely horrendous. They seem to exist in this company to collect a paycheck and nothing else. With countless emails sent to resolve an issue signing up for the Huntr job board, I never heard back from them. The only department I was ever able to talk with via email was the Academic Success team who seem to have their hands tied when it comes to escalating issues and resolving student problems. The content of this course was fantastic and it definitely set me up to learn more and build out my skillset. Which has really been the only redeeming quality of this program.
