  • When a client pays top dollar for my sound design, I always aim for making the patches from scratch. That way I can get the clients totally original sounds, previously not heard anywhere else.
    In addition it gives me great pleasure knowing I actually WORKED for the money.
    In this case I was to make a patch that combined the timbre of something sacral, like a church organ, combined with a soft pad.
    A good starting point for that is a pulse wave (OSC 1) mixed with a saw wave (OSC 2).
    A big thanks to the client for letting me use this sound as part of a tutorial on my channel.

    It's amazing how much you can get done sound design wise with basic wave shapes and judicious use of parameters. Never ceases to amaze me and I don't even have a Prophet. Just a Minifreak. We really live in the golden age of hardware synths.

      I too have a Minifreak and I like it a lot. Great synth.

    I like videos like this because they take me away from my habitual sound design tendencies. 👍

    One of the most excellent and instructive Videos I have seen in years, Espen, you demonstrate that sound design on a synthesizer is not a rocket science for a chosen few selected sound gurus but can be done by anybody willing to dive a little into the world of subtractive synthesis. Well done and keep up the great work on this channel! - Cheers, Olaf

    Last winter I had enormous fun with programming patches on freeware Dead Duck Deducktion Synthesizer VST (32-voice polyphonic, subtractive design) and naming them somewhat like "White Dragon" and so on. Deducktion VST sounds very similar to this tutorial. And I absolutely love synths with FM modifiers - freeware Cobalt VST has very amusing FM tweaks on the board.

    Just got my X back from Sequential (bad power supply board). I revisited some earlier homemade patches and didn’t realize how much the basic waveforms contribute to the sound. Nice video.

    Great! I think I need to practice more on sound design. I almost never get the sounds "right".
    I get a lot of other good sounds, but not the one I had as a goal.

      I love it when I "discover" a patch that is better than the one I was aiming at.

    Great video. Gets if you hold down one of the LFO buttons and turn whatever dial you want to modulate it will automatically assign the modulation. So you don’t need to use the mod matrix for the LFO unless it’s for a parameter that isn’t on the front panel. :)

      Thanks! I know, but I wanted the video to last a little longer than the 30 seconds it would have taken me to make this patch, without having to flash the workflow to the camera. ;-)

    Thanks for teaching us a patch creation sequence from scratch, Espen ❤
    I love the touch of fifth harmonic in your patch. 6:42 It resembles a mutation stop of the pipe organ called nazard.

      Thanks! I've both played and recorded real pipe organs for almost 30 years. I love them and I wish I could play them more often It's been a while since last time.

    When Prophet X came out, it was woah - ultimate synth with analogue and sampled. Now few synth buying behind, still think should have just got PX and live a happy musical life. Anyways.
    Beautiful sound and presentation, Espen! I think musicians need to get a "driver license" before buying any synth and pass the test of making a patch from scratch with a DAW stock synth 😛

    • @EspenKraft

      Nothing wrong with using presets, but for me it's not "right". I want to make my own patches and especially when doing original music for someone else. ;-) Cheers

      @@EspenKraft Totally! Just to make sure this is a case my 3 analogue synths that "survived" over years are: Moog Model D, ARP 2600m, and Buchla Easel 208C 😂 New preset quarantined every time! LOL
      Cheers very much!

    Getting some major synth envy watching this....even if a stock Prophet-X doesn't have Espen's samples. 😁
    I appreciate the lesson. Is there a PC/MAC editor program available for the Prophet-X?

    • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft  Před 8 měsíci +1

      There is in fact a couple of different editors on the market. I find them quite unnecessary as it's very easy to work the PX in itself.

    Could You, please, explain what adding resonance does to the wave form ?

    • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft  Před 8 měsíci +3

      Increasing resonance basically means that you're boosting the frequencies around the filter cut-off frequency. You're adding feedback to the signal and that changes the sound more or less. One of the effects can be that you're getting less "bass" in the sounds while it intensifies at the top end. How much or how little you add in terms of resonance boils down to what sound you're going for.

    • @lesalmin
      @lesalmin Před 8 měsíci

      @@EspenKraft Thanks for the explanation. 👍

    • @wonderwheel80s
      @wonderwheel80s Před 8 měsíci

      @@lesalmin Yeah, especially the typical Moog ladder filter removes much of the low end when you pump the resonance. It's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just its characteristic (I love the ladder filter!). Also, high resonance (on any filter) is used a whole lot for "acid" bass and leads for acid house and techno.
