  • Ep 27 Making a Micro / Mini / Small Lathe (Main Spindle Guard + Sticker from Andrew & Michelle @ Model Engineering Adventures
This lathe was briefly started many many years ago by an unknown Engineer, passed through a few pairs of hands since with nothing else done to it, until i got hold of it, so i will continue with the small amount of work already done, to finish the lathe in to a Imperial Micro / Mini / Watchmakers Lathe with screw cutting capabilities & back geared, everything has got to be made from Scratch including the Back Gears, Clutch, Change wheels, Leadscrew, Tailsock, Spindle, Pulley's, Screwcutting Mechanism, Dials etc etc just to name a few. The casting is very elegant and well made item, with a good foundation to start from.
There were numerous manufactures of these small lathe in Great Britain many moon's ago, to many to name here, so do a search and take a look at the huge seclection of makers and differing shapes, sizes and capabilities.

That is awesome work. You could put a magnet on the end of the stopper stud that locates on the cast iron frame to secure the guard and keep it from rattling. Then again that could also get filled with swarf and be a pain in the a...... Just a thought. Amazing build.

It keeps you safe and doesn't spoil the look of your micro lathe great design. Would be great if you did a sterling or any kind of engine on your micro lathe it's something i have wanted to do for a while but every time I look at stock metal prices I think I'll wait to i find some cheap old scraps but unfortunately that is going for a premium last time i looked.
