"Effort Justification" is a danger for photographers. Some images took such a big effort, that photographers automatically think, they're good - but they might not be at all! Also I personally don't do competitions, I'd rather take a literature competition than a photography competition. I just want to please myself and other with my photos. They just need to look decent: no message, no aspiring art, no reinvention of photography, no mindfuckery.

As usual, your insight is uplifting and inspiring. So many photography channels are so gear or technique focused but yours is also poetic and therapeutic. You so accurately break down and dissect feelings that every photographer has and it's refreshing to know that not only are we not the only ones, but that you have discovered ways to conquer them. Never stop doing what you do on this channel

This guy gets it. I have always felt that too many people focus too heavily on the outcome of their work (myself included). I did it with writing and photography and essentially lost all of my desire to be creative. This video, and others like it, should be at the top of any algorithm CZcams puts together. I have watched hours of videos in the last week and half in lead up to a new camera purchase...product reviews, pros and cons, tips and tricks...you name it. And not one person has mentioned what was mentioned in this video. Putting your work, and by extension yourself out there is so therapeutic. I dont know if my work it, as you put it "rubish" or not, but I do know that I will never find out if I dont share it with the eyes of the world. Thank you for this video, and thank you for your service to your community.

One of your finest Adam. Up there with the wisdom of Sean Tucker. Hats off. 👍💪👌
The process is the key to enjoyment in photography. From the planning, the anticipation, the doing, the walking, the finding, the observing, the calculating, the tweaking an inch, the taking.
There final image is just a juicy bonus if it turns out good and not the be all and end all. And certainly not something to beat ourselves up about.
All about framing your perspective on life.

One of the things I get from your channel that I don't get from others is the psychology of what photographers feel, do, think and why, believe, experience, fear, etc. It is often very thought provoking, sometimes motivational and sometimes instructional, all of which are quite valuable to us as human beings. I have no idea what shaped your skill at this, formal training, time observing people when in police, or simply a talent for introspection but in my opinion, you have a gift that has often been beneficial to me. Thank you.

    "shoot with other people"
The day I went to my first photowalk last year changed everything
It's SOOOOOOOO good walking talking and shooting with other because you can both see moments together and shoot the exact same scene, produce unique results, talk about technique, share knowledge etc I could go on.
It's why I wanna start my own photowalk/meet up as I've made more photographic peers/friends in 12 months than I have in 10 years of just shooting - They've inspired me and I've Inspired them! Even being told by someone "you're one of my favorite photographers" or "your work inspired me to create more" is so nice to hear because they mean it.
Feedback and connection will make you a better creator in the long run.

Adam, I love you openness and the fact that you show that at time you feel vulnerable. I picked up a camera at a garage sale at the end of 2018 and started learning. You are one of the people I found inspiration in. I started posting my works on facebook and Gurushots, this scared the crap out of me. It was rewarding and frustrating at the same time. Pictures that I was very proud of and felt that I worked hard to convey the feeling I had at the time were not always well received and other times the compositions that I just took off the cuff so to say, did really well. To all this I already have anxiety before getting into photography. Although we are in two different countries and have never been face to face, I really enjoy and look forward to your videos and insight. Thank you for what you do and keep at it.

This video is a wonderful tonic. I was a photographer (started with 5x4 and 10x8) and shot everything from fashion and beauty to food and interiors, mainly for ads and editorial, over 30 years all around the world. Mainly back in the days of E6. In the end, impostor syndrome drove me to fall into depression. Self doubt started to creep into my photographic life. In the end I gave away all my photo gear and even the contents of my studio. I made a fire from my portfolios in the garden with the justification that it was all worthless editorial rubbish, with only the passing value of that particular month's issue. And that I was paid handsomely. Thank you for taking the time to address this issue and in such a sympathetic manner. You have a new and grateful subscriber. Cheers.

An excellent video, Adam. You are so right about the way people no longer question things, and the way they assume they are always right. I think a lot of the blame lies with what the Internet has become. I have a science and engineering background, I am sceptical of everything I see on social media, and often have to correct my friends by posting a Snopes rebuttal of the latest meme. The positive message from this video is the necessity of printing your work. I have a wall at the top of our stairs, holding a rotating display of my images which I print on an A3 Canon. Seeing my favourite images every time I go up and down the stairs confirms to me that I am actually a reasonable photographer, and I don't need to sink into that self critical mire. Thank you for this.

Adam, great video. A timely and honest video of how a lot of us feel I'm sure. The advice of printing your images is bang on the money. I find that so many people today, who make spectacular images but don't take the time to invest in having them printed. I mean printed by a person or establishment that does quality work, not the one-hour print shops that don't care about image quality, colour or paper stock. I am very fortunate to have a friend who does top-notch work for my prints and once I see the image on paper it gives me that extra boost to go out and make more images, to improve on my composition, to think more about revisiting the same area and hopefully get even better light. Recently I went to a site that had been photographed a fair bit and I decided to get the shot no one else has or at least in my experience have not seen it taken from that vantage point. For this, I had to go on private property to get that vantage point. This forced me to seek out the landowner, get his permission which, he so generously gave and I got what I consider a unique perspective on a well-photographed landmark. I had this printed and I was blown away by the quality I was able to see on paper. I had this printed so that I could go back to the landowner, present the image to him as a than-you for his generosity as well as grease the wheel, so-to-speak so that I can go back again come the next heavy snowfall to hopefully capture another great image. Sharing the photo even with just one person, whether he hangs it on his wall or not makes it seem all worthwhile.
I like the image so much I'm going to get it printed again so I can hang it on my wall. So much better than looking at it on a monitor.
Great video, keep them coming. You have influenced more people that you know.

I've just watched your video. I must say it resonated with me from the very beginning. I too am an ex-police officer (in Australia) and was diagnosed with PTSD. I've since retired and now live in a beautiful part of Tasmania. I find photography gives me a release from any mental situation. The chance of being out on the landscape alone and trying to find a composition is a feeling that really helps me and gets me in good space. I think it's a natural tendency to be critical of one's own work, the feeling whether it stacks up against others. But the advice you gave was spot on, to keep taking photographs as the next masterpiece is just one click away. Keep going forward and I look forward to your next video. Thanks.

Hi Geoff and thanks so much for your comment. I often find there is an imbalance in the amount of coverage the military gets over the mental impacts of their jobs compared to the police. I am not saying the attention on veterans should change but police officers often face dangerous, tense, thrilling, sad, emotional, funny, devastating situations numerous times every single shift. The impact is real......and on your family too and you are never truly 'off duty'. It is why I always say that a good cop (or ex cop) is one of the finest people you will ever hope to meet.

Adam, I really like your comment about bringing back memories. I recently posted on Facebook, a snap photo that I took back in the mid 1990's. It was just a quick snap taken to finish off a roll of film, but I posted it on a group history page from where I lived at that time. There was a lady in the shot, walking up the road with her back to me, but it happened to be the mother of a lady who has now seen that snap, and brought back find memories for her. To me it was just a quick "throw away shot" at the end of a roll of film, but to the lady who's now seen it on Facebook, it was a precious memory.

Sensible and helpful advice. I do enjoy printing my pictures; I've always felt that having something tangible to hold makes a huge difference.
I very much agree with your comments about social media. The vitriol and bile that is present really worries me: I can see it bubbling over into violence in time. I've been in law enforcement for over thirty years, and have seen a distinct rise in aggressive behaviour in that time; a rise which seems to be accelerating. Photography is a good antidote to that. Thanks again for an inspiring and honest video.

    That video hit hard.
Thank you Adam for being the person you are and for putting yourself on the line because you want to help people like me.
I haven't watched the last three videos of you because I got anxious. Some part envy, some part anxious that my work is bad and will never be good.
I haven't taken pictures for two month now because the weather was bad, it's always foggy and cold and my friends that I take pictures with don't have time.
My banger-shots are from "a long time ago" and I could not get anything fantastic out.
I tried myself on Instagram - got no proper traction and got further down. Same went for your Raw Room. I'm not making you responsible here - It's just that I wanted that recognition, that uplift so desperately, that I completely burned myself out.
My motivation got bombed because I watched too many videos of people like you, Peter McKinnon and everybody else that it made me look like nothing.
Yesterday I went out with my friends and took some images again. Not the most amazing shots and I wish I would have done some compositions different, but it helped me to get back up on track. To realize that I'm not that bad and that I have fun when I'm out and about.
In my opinion it is really, REALLY important to stop comparing yourself to people that do this for a living or that are in it for half t heir lives. Look around you, look at your mates or your photo group you take pictures with. "In your league" and compare it, get feedback and just have some fun.
Thank you for this realization Adam. And keep up the work.
I really like your content and you have been my motivation for countless photos and you will still be that. Thanks for showing us the "mortal side" of a professional person - especially on CZcams.

There are times where my projects, or photographs, doesn't feel like it will pass the "passing test." The thing that stood out is when you mention that it is not about the end outcome, rather it is the process of getting there. Even one of my instructors said that. You are spot on about curiosity and the link to creative pursuits. The best art I have produced was when I had no idea what I was doing with some new piece of gear or a new (to me) feature. Usually something magical happened when I was like "huh I wonder what this does?". It also resonates with me, the concept of having to outdo oneself after having produced something magnificent. The so-called impostor syndrome. It's a little bit like chasing the dragon isn't it? Ultimately I think it is a good thing to experience this in small doses - it informs us that we believe we can do better.

Sounded like you really needed to get that message out there. I totally agree with you. I use my photography as a therapy. It can be a very frustrating therapy at times, but in the end it’s worth it. Most of my photography is done on the run though. I carry my camera with me, at work and if I see an opportunity to get a picture, I will. Will try and make more time for it when I’m not at work this year.

Yes, spot on! I change up genres of Photography all the time. This is more of a hobby than a job. I will pick a couple days in a week to shoot the photos but instead of editing them the same day, I will pace it out. Wait until the next day to pick the photos, then wait again til the next day to review what I picked and rate them. After two days of just reviewing the images, I will group the images to each day of how many photos I edit. Generally I pick up my camera up once a week but some projects it maybe two weeks because for me, I'm getting the most out of the photos I've taken. I came to realize this on a two weeks trip with my wife. Here I was looking at the images and editing everyday. Towards the end of the two weeks, while I still enjoyed the trip I had a bit of photography fatigue but my wife didn't hardly touch her images and got more photos than I did. Two months later, she is still enjoying going through a few images a day and producing many images better than mine, especially from the end of the trip.

I've had high flying jobs, been paid to travel the world. Been the CEO of a number of companies, been lauded by my peers, but the whole time I felt like a fraud. Then at the age of 50 I threw away the corporate world and changed careers to become a builder. These days I'm judged on the work I do on a daily basis. It's funny but I'm way less stressed and happier because I know I'm good at what I do. Then again I've also started a photography business (I need a backup). I can get 2000 likes on a post but that one negative comment REALLY irks me and upsets me. I have to remember that often that 1 negative post is more about that person, and less about what I've done, but it's still a challenge. Ignore the negativity, you're doing a brilliant job

Shooting with other people! How true. Photography workshops changed my photography for the very much better. I was with other like-minded people, swapping experiences, images, techniques, and having a great laugh in the pub afterwards. My knowledge of my camera, lenses and equipment, and composition, came on in leaps and bounds. Very highly recommended!

Thanks Adam for your honesty and integrity. I do sometimes think my work is worthless, and that I’ll never improve. While I would like to get out more, the hard thing for me is balancing it with family life. Sometimes my family resents me getting up early and exploring a piece of local landscape whether I come back with a good photograph or not, even if I’m back home by the time they’re having breakfast, which discourages me from going out as often as I would like, because I feel selfish when I do. I actually liked that photograph of Durdle Door, if it’s any consolation.

    • @Firstmanphotography
      @Firstmanphotography  Před 4 lety

Ha thanks. So did I but one of them had to go to make the point.
Its definitely tough balancing the family life and it's something ever present in my life too. The balance is different for everyone but it is vitally important to maintain your own interests and ambitions. If you're not fulfilled and happy then your family won't be either.
What works for me is enabling my wife to follow her own interests and ambitions, just as she does for me. Besides, the kids always seem to kick off less when it's just one of us looking after them and then they also appreciate it when we all have quality time together.

If I'm feeling a tad insecure about my photography i just grab my camera and go on a wander.
the spontaneity of just wandering around, finding cool places to snap, interesting angles in everyday life and looking closer at a world you thought once familiar, now alien and fresh just revitalises me and gives me more inspiration for future areas to explore and other similar, but different or contrasting areas that I've yet to take a photo of and that creates a positive feedback loop.
I dont have anyone that i do photography with, it's just me I dont have any expensive gear, just a single camera with a kit lens but it's enough.

Hi Adam, i dont often leave comments but i feel i need to. Your vlog really resonated with me, espeshially the inposterism ive always felt like this, even when i was an accident and emergency nurse. Sadly had to give this up due to health reasons nearly 4 years ago. This was when i decided that because i couldnt draw id try to leaen how to take photographs and joined a camera club. After 3 years ive worked my way up by coming 1st each year feom beginner to advanced section, and i truly feel they are just happy accidents. Constantly doubting my ability and find it hard when people ask my advice or help. Your so wise in your words. I have been reading a book called the "secret" which is all about how we shape our own destiny and luck and teaches you to have a more positive outlook. Anyway i just wanted to say thanks as its so nice to not be the only one out there . Your work is awesome and has inspired me in so many ways . 👍

Thanks for the video! I really needed that! A friend of mine always critisised my pictures because they do not meet his expectations. I was a bit discouraged and stopped taking pictures for a while. Then I saw Peter Lindbergh's photos. They are imperfectly perfect. There is no worthless photography! People always tend to make things bad and look for perfection. I personally do not like retouching my pictures, i.e. erasing or adding things. Sure you need to correct exposure or things like that. You do not need the most exensive gear for that. You only need inspiration, and you need to love what you do.
