    1) Eolith is a Korean publisher who funded KoF 01 and 02 since SNK was at Bankruptcy. They told SNK to add a girl character for the Korean Team who became (the broken) May Lee, and also the Final boss to be a young beautiful male character. SNK's original plan for Igniz was to have him same age as the voice actor - Norio Wakamoto(Who was 56 at that time), so while they made him look young, his age was still set as 56.
1-1) A little trivia but Norio Wakamoto has also voiced Vega/M.Bison in CvS1&2, Capcom Fighting Evolution and Rugal at Kof 02. He's also the Japanese voice actor of Johnny in Guilty Gear.
    2) Shinkiro, the artist who did the original KoF arts, went to Capcom after he worked on KoF 00. CvS had Shinkiro arts not because it was a collaboration with SNK, but he was working at Capcom. As for SNK, Nona took over Shinkiro's work for 01&02, but had bad reviews so he was replaced by Falcoon at 03.
    3) Actually Strikers were the most broken mechanic in 01 because you can summon a bunch of them at both time which lead to insane combos. And if you chose more Strikers, your meter got shorter so you could stack them easier, not to mention you had Strength + Toughness buffs like the ratio system.
    4) Ron was the leader of the Chinese Assassins clan who betrayed his own Clan to join NESTS. Lin was searching for him to revenge his betrayal. He's one of the Strikers that the Original Zero(The mid boss) summons, and also is a Father to Duolon, who appears in KoF 03 to XIII.
4-1) KoF was doing well at China and Mexico. Lin and Ramon was made to appeal to each market.
4-2) Actually this Chinese assassins lore was one of the mistakes SNK made during the NESTS saga. made the storyline too complicated that SNK sort-a ditched it at 14.
    5) The NESTS saga did have some good reviews at Japan/Asia market. but the complicity + the terrible localization ruined it for anywhere else. I'm not surprised Max is confused.

Most Chinese characters in KoF are a mixed bag.
On one hand, you have great designs like Duolon, Shen and even Shion(?) from XI. On the other hand, you get weirdos like Lin, Shun'ei and Meitenkun. I wonder what's up with that.
Also, I wonder why SNK had the Psycho Soldier Team represent China all the way up to XIII. That seems like a really weird choice... 🤔

For those interested in a history lession: This KOF was possible thanks to the cooperation of many development studios.
It was a Japanese-Korean-Mexican collaboration between Eolith (from Korea), Playmore (from Japan), Evoga (from Mexico) and Brezzasoft (a studio with some devs from SNK after their bankruptcy). Some developers from other games like Rage of the Dragons were directly involved with this game as well (for example, Evoga employees were responsible for Angel's creation thanks to a bet made between studios).
As weird as this KOF was, the development behind it is really one of the most interesting aspects of the game.
Also, one more thing: Eolith and Playmore are not the same, nor did one merged into the other.

    • @meganinten0078
      @meganinten0078 Před 2 lety +9

      FINALLY!
      Someone said it.
Learning about the development of 2001 is heartwarming.
All those factions working together to continue the KOF series after SNK downfall.
In fact, the founder of the original SNK Eikichi Kawasaki founded Playmore and hired Brezzasoft to work for 2001
Eolith came to help finance the game and giving some new characters.
Thanks to Eolith we got May Lee, Igniz, K9999 and Kusanagi (those characters are very popular!)
And finally as you said, the guys at Evoga were responsible to Angel's creation.
SNK lost a bet with Evoga and that's why Angel is mexican and also her name is based on the chief of Evoga, Angel Torres.
Despite all issues, all those companies managed to make a very fun KOF game.
The gameplay of KOF 2001 is my absolute favorite with the Strykers.
And I much prefer to play 2001 over 99 and 2000.

the creepy zombie phantom guy who kept appearing during the o. zero fight is duo lon's dad, ron, who betrayed the hizoku clan and started working with nests for some reason. both lin and duo lon have been searching for him forever.
shion, the spear-enby from the end of kof xi, was originally meant to be his daughter (so, duo lon's sister), but at the last minute they decided androgyny would be more interesting and they ditched the hizoku connection (or at least chose not to emphasize it).
the psycho soldier storyline all through the nests era seems to be building up to a big thing with the hizoku and ron and "dragon power," but then snk died after kof 2000, and under the direction of the korean company eolith who briefly grabbed up the rights to the series in a fire sale from snk's former parent company, kofs 2001 and 2002 didn't go exactly the way they had been planned.
(kof 2002um was playmore's later attempt to partially "reclaim" 2002 by bringing it back closer to what they might have done with the game if they had been in a place to six years earlier, without completely throwing away the underlying original game to avoid pissing off people who liked the way eolith's 2002 had played..)
(all this also informs the weird situation with k9999/mr. krohnen macdougall esq., who was created outside of snk's supervision and previously to kofxv only existed in eolith's two games. snk technically had the rights to his character, and apparently there wasn't really any legal issue over the akira stuff-otomo personally gave snk his blessing over the character. it's just, symbolically k9999 was The Eolith Character, right, and a character that snk wouldn't have created that way. ergo snk staff just not *liking* him and spending years trying to retcon him away until enough time had passed that it was funny actually and unexpected and interesting to finally bring him back-albeit again in a sort of "reclaimed" form.)
by the time playmore got its act together and scrabbled back as many of the old snk properties and design staff as they could who hadn't moved on to capcom or dimps or wherever (later to produce street fighter iv, the dbz fighting games, etc.), they just chose to wipe the board and do something else from scratch-ergo the ash saga.
though even there, the presence of duo lon and the original concept behind shion suggest some intention to eventually get back to the hizoku stuff. but of course the next few games suffered even more development hell, and i guess the hizoku stuff was put forever on the back burner.
