- In this video I take my Mossberg Patriot in 7mm PRC to a 1000 yard range. I test it against my 300 Weatherby and 257 Weatherby. Which cartridge is going to do better at long distance? Come find out!

That is a fun day
Had a blast! Thanks for watching!
I'm thinking my guy got a bad rifle. You wanna help him out with getting it swapped out with one that will actually shoot?
I appreciate that your not a pretender Adam.
A 400 yard shot and tight group is hard for most. A 600 yard is no joke, and beyond is harder yet.
Loved the bullet trail through the scope.
Really cool to see! Thanks for watching
Good group and shooting with that 300 WBY. One of the most capable all around hunting cartridges you can get. But you get that 340 WBY you've been talking about and you'll probably have more contact with the forehead than you want. Be sure to put the most eye relief scope on that one - I had to install a Leupold scope on my 338 RUM 20 years ago because the Zeiss I had on it was causing me to smack my noggin way too much. Enjoyed the video!
Gotta love Leupold eye relief, just one of the reasons nearly all my rifles wear one.
Happy birthday mate, good vid, cheers Yogi 🤙✌️
Thank you!
Great video..thanks.
I had a buddy shoot my Rem 7600 in 270 win. The scope cut him gave him' Magnum eye brow' lol he was used to shooting see thru scope mounts on a marlin 336 lol
That was 30 years ago lol ahh the good ol days shooting groundhogs all summer and deer in the fall. Unfortunately now all the meadows that were our varminting grounds now have houses in them..time really changes things..again thanks for videos.
Happy Birthday!!
Thank you
Happy Birthday!
Thanks
Guys are pushing the 190s at 3k, 3100 isn't unheard of on those 175s. Push that skinny pedal on the right a little harder. 😁
That WBY is about a laser isn't it? You can see how flat it is in the trace, that's pretty impressive. Nice group too. Measure from the center of the bullet holes, not the outside edges. It was less than a .75" group. Too bad it hurts so bad to shoot.
Always had a soft spot for that 257... my pops used it when I was growing up. Thing was a laser out to 475...
Honestly I’ve spent a lot of time going over rifles this month because I haven’t hunted in 16 years and need a good western rifle.
This debate I’m seeing over calibers is kind of crazy. Long range shooting the B.C will matter. But from all the data I’ve poured over 600+ it will matter. Most people couldn’t hit the barn at that distance. My time in the service proved that.
Inside 600 yards every 7 and every 300 is good. Pick the one that makes your winky stiff and have fun. Especially since most guys hunting just grab the factory stuff.
If you want to shoot at paper a mile away screw it. Go 30-378WBY or 300 PRC or whatever.
Fun video to watch bro you took that scope like a champ. And my guy you’re a hell of a shooter. Nice job
Thanks
OUCH on the scope hit
Ugh, what hurts more, the scope bit or admitting the 7PRC won?
7 PRC hurts more lol. Now... in fairness. I shot the 300 WBY first at every new target. It was kind of my wind guinea pig.
You took that scope bite like a trooper R. Dubb. Like the old folks used to say, "You dance with the devil, you bound to get horned!" 😂
I love my Browning XBolt SPR 20inch barrel 7PRC
@@liverpool6380 that's probably the barrel length I'd go with. What are you getting for velocity and with what load?

I love it!
compact, & light weight.
I don’t want to lie. I need to test out the velocity.
Dropped a 🦌 110 yard neck shot
175gr eldx factory. I don’t reload yet. But that’s the plan one day.
It’s always nice when you don’t have to track.
Looks like a good time. I've been loading for my 7prc with 180gr bergers using staball hd with velocity of 2900fps. Getting great groups and highly recommend the combo
Peterson Brass
Staball HD roughly 70gr my rifle.
Winchester Mag primers
Berger VLD hunting 180gr. I'll be working up loads higher with hopes of 2950 to 3k
@@codynewby646I’m using 68.1 grains of h1000, Berger 180 vld, and Hornady brass and I am getting 2950 out of a 26 inch barrel. Shooting .5 moa groups.
PRc is my pick.
You did not skimp on bullet quality. Great vid!
And of course we don't know the tracking quality on each scope, which can be a big factor, although maybe you do know they're all the same for tracking.
I can say for sure that you shot better than I could have.
Although I would say out to 500 with the 257, I hopefully would have done better.
Another thing to consider is if it's the bullets all are rated with accurate bc's for proper doping, unless they've been verified already.
Great job.
That was fantastic. Great job! I am going to go give blood next week just for you!😅
Looking forward to seeing how your gun shoots!
@@ReloadingWeatherbyHopefully I should be able to get some groups in early this week before the weather moves in on us later this week.
2800 FPS hits > 3400 FPS misses. its 7 prc all day for me
FWIW... I made the wrong calculations for my 257 Weatherby. I would have hit much more consistently if I used the correct data. I will have to retest.
Great video!! What do we think the results would look like if every rifle were identical other than caliber?
Honestly about the same. When I missed with the 7mm PRC it was because of a bad wind call by me
Told ya😅 cool video
Dang. I thought that one bullet came apart like I've read about Hornady ELDX doing.
I'm shooting steel... not animals.
@@ReloadingWeatherby Not in animals in mid flight. There are a couple videos show Hornady ELDX basically exploding do to the 270k RPM centrifugal force. Bullet comes apart before it reaches the target
6.8 Western 😮
Hey Hoss. Put up a F-Class 1k yard target and shoot it and use a Go Pro camera and show the target live!!!
That would be fun
Nice video. Imagine how a 7mm PRC might do in a higher quality rifle. I did not realize until recently about the 6.5-300 Weatherby Magnum that has been out for I think 7 years. If one worked a load for that it could be a super winner. With shortage of ammo and some rounds running $5 each it is easy to see why it did not catch on. Dies to reload would be pricey. I had custom dies done for a 30 super years ago.
I have a 7PRC in a seekins precision PH2... 26 IN barrel nets me box ballistics or better. higher quality gun definitely makes a difference... that being said, any weatherby round is going to outperform a hornady round... I just don't want to pay $6-8 / round for weatherby's "select plus" ammo
@@tylervolentine1286Spot on enjoy your 7mm PRC. It seems Hornady changed powders in the 7mm PRC because of price increases in powder protecting their profit margins. They do make some good ammo but after seeing what they did changing powders who can trust buying their factory ammo. I can't, I bought some for my 7mm PRC and it was disappointing. It's OK enough to hunt with withing a couple hundred yards for me, but that isn't what you should get for over $50 for 20 rounds, I am currently reloading for mine.
@@garrytalley8009That's good to know! Probably why people were disappointed with the 22-24 in barrels since they were originally claiming that's all you needed. Thankful I went 26. I've been getting same hole accuracy out of the factory ELDX... the ELDM's were a little less consistent but still slightly under MOA. Haven't tried the CX or any of the other brands loads. Definitely will get into reloading it just to see if I can get better performance with even heavier bullets
The 6.5 300 was first made in the 50s Roy just never released it
Nice rifles and nice shooting, however I am scratching my head, me thinks recoil does matter?
Didn't hurt my group
You need to try 195gr bulldozers on your 300wby I’m getting 3190-3200 bc .675. Standard 1-10 stabilizes them. These things are long range missiles
That sounds awesome! This 180 gr Cutting Edge has a b.c. of .575
Gotta love #northspringsshootingrange
Yep!
7prc in 162 gr eldx retumbo out of my savage is lights out.
Nice
300 Weatherby without a brake!!!
I have some of the older WBY 300s, they are better balanced and they were constructed before muzzle brakes were made. I also have some new ones with the plastic stocks, they do need a brake no doubt.
Try 28 Nosler with 175 grain bullet at 1000 yards
I just ordered a POF 13.75 P&W Rogue 308. It’s a Sub 6pound rifle.
I pick it up Monday.
I’m going on a 🐗 hunt in May.
I also plan to take it this 🦌 season.
Do you ever review Semi autos?
I’m trying to figure out what projectile to use. Any recommendations?
I’ll post a short video on Monday or Tuesday. I’ll sight it in Saturday with a couple different rounds to see what it likes.

What bullets did you get for it?
@@ReloadingWeatherby
150gr Hornady InterLock SP
175gr Federal Terminal Ascent
168gr Barnes Vor-Tx TTSX
@@liverpool6380 If I had to guess on which bullet will shoot best... 168 TTSX. But every gun is different. Terminal Ascent is a great bullet as well
My 300 .56 at 100..
My 7prc .32 at 100
If you reload...130 grain Barnes TTSX. Makes things die, speeds the bullet up, and makes the recoil even less.
Sir, please educate me on exactly what is "free recoiling" your rifle, GRACIAS
The only thing on your body that is touching your rifle is your finger
@@ReloadingWeatherby copy, appreciate you, I have the same vanguard s2 as you and load it hot like you, but I'm always tightly gripping that beast, no brake
If I was a betting man… glad you aren’t a betting man!
Don't need to lose money
Why compare the 7 mm PRC against the 300 Wtby Magnum? Put a 26” bbl 28 Nosler up against it.
It's what I have
Well, at least the 2 weatherby's were shooting good hunting bullets, unlike the prc.
Am I reading the numbers wrong, or did you have to adjust the 7prc the most for elevation?
If that's the case, It seems like it would not do as well in the wind.
I'd say the 300 is the clear overall winner because a couple at least one miss was because you overcompcated on the first 1000 yd shot.
Either way, it shows tiny groups aren't necessarily all important to hitting at long range.
Good shootout.
Every new target I shot at... I started with my 300 Weatherby. I kind of used it as the wind guinea pig. If I would have shot the 7mm PRC first.. I would have missed at least one more shot. As for the 257 WBY... That was all on my wrong calculations. Bullet was going faster than I thought.
@ReloadingWeatherby that's what I was sorta thinking.
Great shooting, considering the conditions.
Yeah, I'm sure you'll do better with the 257
I disagree , it was a tie between the 300 and the 7 because you changed bullets with the 300 and hit it on the first try with the 200 gr !…… Thanks for the comparison .
Thats a long stretch for hunting rifles out of the box.
The 257 weatherby hung in their. High misses were on you not the wind and snow.
Yep. Bullet was going faster than I thought
Looked to me like your misses were related to your dope needing refining . Just for fun , try that 257wby load with the berger 135gr @ 1000
7prc
Thanks for watching
Im bout to start load development on my 7 prc any recommendations?
H4831SC is getting my best accuracy
Do you have a bullet picked out? I'm smokin one hole 3 shot groups with LRT and Retumbo
The terminal ascent or the ablr if I can get them
@@jameswilson5562 Hmm, that's a problem. You're hoping for a lot with those 2 selections. Don't blame you at all but you might be waiting up to a couple years for those bullet choices. Regardless, the 7PRC does will with several powders: LRT, StaBall HD, H1000, H4831SC, IMR4831, IMR 7828SSC, Retumbo, VVN565, 568, 570, and I think N170 but don't hold me to that last one. I've not personally tested it. I've had extremely poor brass life with Hornady. I will never load it again. Stick with Federal, ADG, Peterson. My best guess is we will see Norma and Lapua in the next 18 months
What elevation is this? And what are your rifles zero at?
5600 feet and zero for 200 yards for all of them

Could of used a lead sled but you heard some goober tell you it hurts the weapon. That is simply not true.
It can be true if too much weight is added. "Could have...."
I mean if I wanted those velocities with 7mm I rather shoot a 280 AI. A good load is just that a good load. The more work you put into the load and the data you’re going to shoot good at long range. 257 looks like you was just running wrong data. It was running so much flatter than the data you was using.
Yeah that was my fault
@@ReloadingWeatherby got to shoot my 25 creed yesterday with 117 Sierra SBT with aa4350. It shot a 1.13” (.36 MOA) group at 300 yards. Love the quarter bore.
Did that dude bleed like a faucet? Usually forehead cuts bleed like hell lol. Ask me how I know lol
I had a good amount of blood
Say what you want to about this, but I gotta say that’s not apples to apples. A Weatherby vs a Mossberg? We all know that Mossberg’s barrel isn’t up to par and not sure what trigger you got in there, but a Browning/Tikka wouldn’t lose that fight, especially in a PRC. PRC’s are flat out lasers, they shit on the wind. My 7mm Rem Mag vs my PRC or Creedmoor is a no brainer. I’d pickup a “Creedmoorized” bullet any day for an accuracy test and those were hand loads. Not talkin junk on you, but we don’t know how well you load? That’s just bein real. Good video, I just don’t think it’s totally “scientific” so to speak. You know what I’m sayin
Never said it was a scientific comparison. I get half MOA or smaller with all of my other guns with my reloads. The Mossberg is... well a Mossberg. With that being said the 7mm PRC has not been getting advertised velocity and as a reloader you really have to stand on it to get the book velocity(24inch barrel)
What powder are you using? I would say the accuracy is probably due to the barrel on the Mossberg and possibly trigger. The worst groups I’ve gotten were with my Weatherby Vanguard (Howa) 7mag. , but it was just not an ideal bullet/powder combo. Have a Savage AXIS II .243 that shoots 1/4” groups. I guess it just depends. I look at Weatherby and their ammo as premiere components. From what I’ve seen from the 6.5 PRC’s is just magic. I now own two (Browning Western Hunter and Tikka Roughtech). I’ve been intimidated to shoot 1,000 yards for years and was invited to go recently. Hit the 3 shots I took with that Browning. I can’t say enough good things about that round.
7prc won thru a junk mossberg, if you had something like a Christensen or something else, it’d smash”em all IMO and experience
I don't think so... the only time I missed with the 7mm PRC was when I made a bad wind call. These targets were too big to see the difference between a half MOA gun and a 1.5 inch gun
257 was you not the gun you shot high on every target
Yep. Bullet was going faster than I thought
You need to know your gun
I screwed up with the 257... was shooting faster than I thought
@@ReloadingWeatherby that thing is flat shooting
Respectfully, you didn’t get to the point of comparing cartridges since your baseline was never established.
You proved the Hierarchy of Why We Miss concept pretty handily.
1.) we suck at shooting.
2.) we suck at calling wind
3.) weapon system isn’t zeroed
4.) weapon system is not accurate.
Clearly your rifles weren’t actually zeroed (which complicates your wind calling problem) and none of them were particularly accurate.
Would be cool to see a rematch on this with each rifle shooting its respective load into a 1.5” or less 10 shot group and zeroed off that group.
Kinda seemed like your cartridge choice didn’t matter nearly as much as baseline accuracy and wind calling.
I too suck at shooting a rifle as I’ve proved many times over to myself and others, so not trying to act like I’m elite or any such nonsense.
You're mostly right. misses came down to my shooting errors. And yes it was a very shallow comparison. 257 Weatherby is actually my most accurate rifle. It shoots the 110 gr Accubond at half MOA. Unfortunately I didn't have my ballistic data correct. Bullet was going faster than I previously tested over the chronograph.
@@ReloadingWeatherby sounds like a killer combo! I sometimes think the world needs a 25 PRC or 25 SAUM Improved with an 8 twist to shoot 135 Hybrids and do similar things. 25’s are just cool.
Your 257 Weatherby would have done much better if you had your ballistic calculations right😂
Yeah...
Well documented The Mossberg is not very accurate.
Yeah...
I have two 4x4’s(predecessor to the patriot) that each shoot pretty decent. But I’ve not heard great stuff in the last few years.
