Pure magic.
R.I.P. LEN BARRY
sweet memories
Song writer Leonard Borisoff is actually the given name for Len Barry. Before going solo he was lead singer with the Dovells.
The best thing Len Barry did was Quit the Dovells His talent was hidden with them. Love this Guy!
RIP, Len Barry! Heard the sad news yesterday!
Loved this back then & still do. The memories in my heart attached to this song, shall never fade away. They are a treasure.
Oh the 60’s
I was 2 years old when this song debuted! 😄
Sure is POWERFUL HOT Mono, Thanks.
A very simple song converted into an excellent production, with trumpets, trombones, saxes, congas, multiple back up vocals and choruses, and mainly the STRONG a-gogo beat & rythm section (drums/bass) of those years.
Plus, Len Barry was not a bad singer neither.
Nice song.Thanks.
On this day in 1965 {Nov. 20th} Len Barry performed "1-2-3" on the ABC-TV program 'Shindig!'
Two months earlier on Sept. 25th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 1 week} & spent 15 weeks on the Top 100
It reached #11 on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart...
And on Nov. 27th it peaked at #1 {for 1 week} on the United Kingdom's New Musical Express chart
One year later in 1966 Jane Morgan covered it; her version reached #16 on Billboard's Easy Listening chart
Moved into our house on the Main Line when this came out. Good times, better music...RIP LEN..
This is the mix I was looking for. As a lad of 10 listening to this song burning through my 5 transistor radio I'll never forget it.
There is something about these old monaural mixes that is completely destroyed when they are remastered in stereo. It's called "ambiance." All you young 'uns out there can keep your stereo mixes. I'll take these original mono mixes any day!!
it is the remake of Dancing on the street :) It is a piece that sounds great. And remember to many Italians how much R & B in the style of Motown would have heard in television themes in the sixties
Great music your the best
Whoa this mono version comes in thundering. I love the sound!
I have the 45 like a baby is on the flip side
Great hearing the mono version! Thanks!
Wow! Fall 1965 I was born June! And I always loved this song, whatta beauty 🐇💋💫💿💫 nothing like the 1960s classics 👑 my parents were so young then 32 yrs old (RIP) they must have made a lot of Love to this song 💝💗💖💙💜💙💘💝💖💗💙💜
And the whole WORLD danced to 123!
Another one hit wonder from my teen years. Very well done!
Yes, another great song from 1965--Ft Hood Texas in the Army.
The 1960's music was and still is the best years of music. I should know, I turned 20 years old in 1960. The best time in my life.
Debut 9/18/1965 and peaked at #1 for ONE week on the Cashbox Top 100 Singles chart.
Len Barry used to be in a vocal group called the Dovells, whose only hit song was "The Bristol Stomp".
They had another hit - "You Can't Sit Down" from 1963 (#3/Pop - Billboard)
@@kevingoins9858 I see...may Len Barry rest in peace! BTW, I heard a cover of this song on the radio by the late Doug Bennett in 1986!
First time I have heard this from a 45, you're right - the sound is MUCH better than any other than I have heard. THANKS.
I've never heard this song this GREAT before.
I have the single
5 seconds were enough to give you a like.
Great song that peaked at # 2 in the fall of 1965.

Hit when I was at high school (50th reunion coming up next year). Still love it.
One of my all time favs!! Thanks soo much!!
Great Song. LOVE THE INTRO
One of my all time favorites! I've got an original pressing as well but I've got the paper sleeve with all the Decca phonograph players printed on it. Thanks for sharing this great song!
Intro sampled on the 1995 hit 'A Girl Like You' by Edwyn Collins.
Tiempo sin escuchar ésta joya,
Gracias por compartir...
being sped up a tad + the massive compression added makes this incredible compared to the limp stereo mix
this is fantastic. great vocal dynamics and it rocks
Didn't know he died in late 2020 💙
memories of sitting in the back of one of my dads many hertz rent a cars going to either coney island or some relative in Queens. Especially during those sunny spring days! Thanks for this upload!
An absolute top fave of mine! Young love days. Oh to be a teenager again! Where did you dig up all of these 45's? I have my stack from those days, but they would never play this clean... if I had a turntable. Thanks so much for all these!
Found this 45 because of you, (mono version) many thanks!
The sound is SO GOOD! Thanks for uploading.
Lo mejor en musica pionera
One of the first 45s I bought from Rooky's in SF. Dick said "Oh I love Len Barry!" I do to! Check out Jerry Ganey "You Don't Love Me" for a similar sound.
Knocks Phil Spector's Wall of Sound clean out of the ballpark ! ⚾👻🎆❤
waoooo tremendo sonido
Reminds me of Boot Camp (your left right left. One two three fawww!). Easy as taking candy from a baby turtle 😛🤪
rooolllooonoonnnn me recuerda cuando morro en tijuana yessssssss thank you so much
Lyrics:
1-2-3
Oh, that’s how element’ry
It’s gonna be
Come on, let’s fall in love
It’s easy (it’s so easy)
Like takin’ candy (like takin’ candy) from a baby
A-B-C (A-B-C)
Fallin’ in love with you
Was easy for me (easy for me)
And you can do it too
It’s easy (it’s so easy)
Like takin’ candy (like takin’ candy) from a baby
Baby, there’s nothin’ hard about love
Basically, it’s as easy as pie
The hard part is livin’ without love
Without love, baby, I would die
(1-2-3)
(1-2-3)
It’s easy (it’s so easy)
Like takin’ candy (like takin’ candy) from a baby
One and one are two (one and one are two)
I know you love me and oh, oh
How I love you (how I love you)
Don’t try to fight it
‘Cause it’s easy (it’s so easy)
Like takin’ candy (like takin’ candy) from a baby
1-2-3 (1-2-3)
Oh, that’s how element’ry
It’s gonna be (it’s gonna be)
Come on, let’s fall in love
It’s easy (1-2-3)
Oh, that’s how element’ry
@Shane...you forgot about "You Can't Sit Down"....top ten in May, 1963
Great picks, keep them coming!
Barry was Lead Singer for the Dovells.
what a great tune i also like beach baby by first class
That song was pretty much a love letter to the beach boys. Loved it
You're right about it being cribbed from another Motown record, but not "Dancing In The Street". The writers of "1-2-3" were actually sued by Motown's publishing company Jobete Music when they discovered that "1-2-3's" chorus is exactly the same chord progression as The Supremes "Ask Any Girl". If you see any compilations now with the Len Barry song, you'll see Holland/Dozier/Holland added to the writing credits.
This doesn't say "Motown" to me...more East Coast.
the Vinyl is so awesome - I heard - Ask Any Girl - sounds nothing like 1-2-3- - Ridiculous - Motown was mad because they thought their sound was ripped off - They not only were influenced by The Motown Sound they topped it - Masterpiece - Love that Vinyl -
Motown was also angry AF because they offered Len a record deal prior to Decca. He rejected it because the terms stunk and the $$ offered was a pittance.
Berry Gordy was so possesive of his claimed property! If his employees were late for a session He'd fined them.
Once Brother in Law of Hy Lit.....;)
I remember this song, around 1965 or 66. I didn't think it was bad, but his next release was almost an exact copy and I thought they should have called it 4-5-6. I don't know if he had any other hits..
Len Did! He was the lead singer of The Dovells. He sang lead on "The Bristol Stomp" & " You Can't Sit Down". Both songs were #2 Hits on the Billboard Charts. He w that group had a couple other Top 10 Hits.
"1 - 2 - 3" is a 1965 song written and recorded by Len Barry. The song was co-written by John Madara (John Medora) and David White. The recording's chorus and accompaniment was arranged by Jimmy Wisner. The single was released in 1965 on the American Decca label. The writers were sued by Motown Records at the time, claiming that the song is a reworking of Holland-Dozier-Holland's "Ask Any Girl" released by The Supremes as the B-side to their single "Baby Love" the year before.
It was like "Taking candy from a baby"
I believe the legal fees and restrictions ( Barry could not get royalty payments for two years ), all put a damper on Len Barrys career.. Motown was suing every performer that remotely resembled "the Motown sound".. The "Motown Mafia"...
B side is treat her right
Thank you for these playbacks. Can I what setup you use for deck and amp to have such a crystal clear recording? I wish I could get this sound. Thanks!
wow... what did you do to make it sound this great? did you use any kind of compressor/limiter or optimod?
No compression added or needed - this is exactly how the record sounds- spectacular!
you have a good library, got anything by the Everly Brothers?
God anpther Dancng on the street rip off ! But this tune is even better than its insipration :) Copying and re elaborating is one of the lessons more difficult to pass. I love this track.
Funny, the fade on this 45 single version is different from that on the LP. Which I suppose, really, was nothing unusual in terms of 1960s record mixing/production: czcams.com/video/DcxcbzAYD9Y/video.html
An effective way to rewrite a successful tune as Dancing in the street :)
this sounds nothing like dancing in thestreet
I noticed here for the first time in playing through your records/videos the 60hz hum is gone. Did you ground the turntable or where was the problem?
omg that's so alimentary
Don’t go to Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz!
1-2-3 was once alleged to have copied another production.
The 1-2-3 song and Ask Any Girl song do not seem to match up at all. The lyrics are different, the singing is different, the instrumentals are different; where is the new performance of 1-2-3 that is similar to Ask Any Girl? Ask Any Girl was the B side of another song. Please listen to both versions and see if you see any similarities, I just do not see or hear any (then again I am a not a musician, however, I cannot see 1-2-3 having infringed upon any other trademark). 1-2-3 was, is, and will be a great ballad song for the ages. Can it be assumed that everyone else copied The Beatles because they were the pacesetters of all 1960s music and on? No, I don't think so.
I have a stereo mp3 of this song, with the slapback echo on the count-off. Was this on the actual mono recording, or was it from another take?
Trivia question: What song was on side B , on this 45?
~ "Bullseye" is the B-side on both copies I have, and also is on the original L.P. "1-2-3." Cheers, DAVEDJ ~
I see that you stored the records by sitting them on top of each other. Isn't this a bad practice, because it can warp them?
CKLW use to speed up the songs too! Better sound!
just play the fucking record
The only part of this song that sounds like any other is the horn intro similar to "Dancing in Streets" and thats similar to Stevie Wonders "Love a Go-Go"
