    The recent update on the XTOOL D7 added many new features and special functions to this already great diagnostic scan tool. The upgrade added vehicle-specific functions, such as Fuel Trim Reset, fuel alcohol composition reset, fuel injector balance, EVAP service bay test, reset transmission adaptation, passenger presence system re-zero, crankshaft variation re-lean, etc. It basically made the D7 function exactly the same as the D8, with the exception of some ECU coding and configuration abilities on some makes/models. This is a huge upgrade and makes the D7 probably the lowest price scan tool on the market with this much capability. (as of the day this video was uploaded, anyway. Things can change with time) If you're in the market for a new scan tool, you must give this tool some consideration. If you already have a D7, be sure to download the new update to get all of this new functionality goodness. There was a glitch getting my D7 scan tool to download and install this new update correctly.... I show in this video how to force the device to pull down the new software package. If you're having any trouble getting the update on your D7, be sure to watch this video to see the fix.

    Very nice, it's great to get info from such an excellent communicator. Not always the case on Tube. I'm trying to decipher the difference, if any, between a cylinder contribution test and a power balance test. One or two sources say they are the same. I've seen the graph real time tests here on tube, but I haven't seen one on this device. I guess the Autell does them, but the latest info I have is it gives it in a single number for each cylinder, as opposed to a real time graph.

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you for the compliment!
      Cylinder contribution and power balance test are basically the same thing. Different companies call things by different names. In this particular case, I'm not 100% sure if it was the automotive manufacturers, or the scan tool manufacturers who named this test with two different names but keep in mind, it's not the scan tool running these "tests", it's the PCM (computer) in the vehicle that is actually doing the "work", the scan tool is simply commanding the function, then displaying the data that the computer in the car is sending out.... Depending on the year/make/model, it might be in graph form, or it might be in number form. You can only run a cylinder balance test or Cylinder contribution test if that functionality is already programmed into the car's PCM. If not, the scan tool cannot command something that doesn't exist in the first place. This is true with most features and functions on scan tools. Just because the scan tool is CAPABLE of displaying certain info, or running a certain "test", doesn't mean it can do it on every make/model of vehicle ever made. The D7 can now do a "power balance test" on my GM truck..... but it might be called a "cylinder contribution test" on a Ford truck with a Powerstroke diesel engine. Or, I might plug into a vehicle that is not capable of running any sort of cylinder/power test at all..... It all depends on the vehicle make/model and what the manufacturer of that vehicle has programmed into the PCM, and what they have named certain items within their software. I hope this makes sense. Thanks for the question.

      That's limited to the particular vehicle that you're plugged into. If the auto manufacturer didn't put those options in the vehicles computer to begin with, then there isn't a scan tool on earth that can toggle those functions on/off. You might plug this tool into a vehicle and see a bunch of options to turn on/off, then immediately plug it into a different vehicle and not see any options. Example: I have a 2022 KIA and I HATE the daytime running lights.... and none of my scan tools give me the option to turn those off. And no, I have not had the chance to use any of the Launch x431 variants. Sorry. Thanks for the question.

      Good point.... and a point that most people forget about. This scan tool has the ability to tell the vehicle about a new key that you want to use. However, it does NOT have the ability to put a program into the key itself. That usually takes a programming dock of some sort. I am not a key programming expert by any means so I am not the best to be answering specific questions about key programming. Great information, thanks much. Was wondering if this unit is capable of adjusting or programming a new engine idle speed? Mine needs to get bumped up around 100rpm. Hoping this scanner is the one to achieve that.

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Před rokem

      That greatly depends on the vehicle. Usually the target engine idle RPM is set by the computer and cannot be changed by ANY scan tool...... UNLESS that option has already been pre-programmed into the vehicle's computer from the factory..... If the factory has not allowed engine idle speed to be changed, then it will usually take more than just a scan tool to adjust idle RPM. That usually requires full tuning software, or an update from the vehicle manufacturer. Now, with all that said, I have no idea what vehicle you have so I can't be 100% positive that your idle is not adjustable, but typically that is not something that can be permanently adjusted by a scan tool. HOWEVER, a scan tool can usually (again, depending on vehicle) adjust engine idle rpm TEMPORARILY for diagnostic and repair reasons, but as soon as the tool is unplugged from the DLC port, then computer will go back to default engine idle RPM. Thanks for the question

      My scan tool is still showing 4.27.4 and I just let all the updates install that have came out since I last updated the tool. (when I originally recorded this video) I am not sure how XTOOL numbers their updates. I was only told that 4.27.4 is the one that contained the newest functionality. As for your scan tool.... Do you see "Special Functions" AND "Actuation Tests" in the diagnosis menu structure? Are you looking for "fuel trim" or "fuel trim reset"? "Fuel trim" numbers will be found in the Powertrain>Engine> Engine Live Data menu and it will usually be labeled "Long tern fuel trim" or "Short term fuel trim" . The "fuel trim reset" function would be found under "special function" in the Diagnosis menu structure. Of course all this depends on what vehicle year/make/model you are plugged into..... but generally what I have posted above applies to most vehicles. What type of vehicle are you working on?

Think of the scan tool as just a window into your car's computer.... You will only be able to see the features and functions that are programmed into the vehicle's computer from the factory. The scan tool simply displays those option and allows you to command functions provided by the vehicles manufacturer. The scan tool itself doesn't really do anything.... It's just acts as an interface between the vehicle's computer and a human. I know very little about German vehicles (Mini is owned by German manufacturer, BMW) but I do know that some vehicles use o2 sensors, and some vehicles now use wideband o2 Air/Fuel ratio sensors. German vehicles may display their "fuel trim" as something completely different. Just remember all scan tool menus, features, functions, and live data pids can, and usually will change depending which vehicle your plugged into. What I see when plugged into my 2006 GMC truck WILL NOT be anywhere close to what I see if I plugged into your Mini Cooper. Everything on the screen of the scan tool will appear totally different. Yes, it should be able to do that..... Where it's located will be determined by the specific vehicle that you're plugged into. So, in other words, it's located wherever the software engineers from the vehicle manufacturer put that option when they wrote the software for that particular make/model. It can be anywhere in the menu structure and it can/will change from vehicle to vehicle. Think of a scan tool as a simple window into your vehicles computer. It can only show what the vehicle manufacturer wants you to see, and when where to see it. It's the computer in the vehicle that is actually running the synchronizer procedure, the scan tool just allows a human to make that selection. Thanks for the question.

    Hi, Does D7 support ADAS calibration? and also Customizations of certain functions like turning of seatbelt warnings?

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Před rokem +1

      I don't believe the D7 includes any ADAS features. As for customization.... every vehicle is different. But just keep in mind, EVERY customization has to be already programmed into the vehicles computer to begin. There is NOT a scan tool on earth that can force a vehicle to do something that the automotive manufacturer hasn't already programmed into the vehicles computer. Example: I have a 2022 KIA and I HATE the daytime running lights. NONE of my scan tools can shut those off.... and the dealer tells me they cant even shut them off with their factory software. The manufacturer did not program that option into my vehicle so there is NO WAY to turn those off. Just keep this in mind....

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Před rokem +1

      Not that I know of. If you want full TPMS capabilities, you're going to always pay extra for that. As for mileage correction.... It's been almost 30 years since I've personally replaced a gauge cluster... and using mileage correction for anything else in illegal here in the USA so I don't even really consider that feature when I'm looking at scan tools. I'm sure it would genuinely come in handy for some techs, but most people get other ideas when they hear a scan tool can change the mileage shown on an odometer. I don't know much about mileage correction because I've never needed it.

    2 questions:
    1. Does the D7, out of the box, have the ability the communicate with ALL vehicles from every country that are in the menus ?
    2. When you have to pay for your new annual subscription, does it refresh ALL the vehicles, or is it per vehicle...? Thanks!

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Před rokem

      1) I cannot verify with 100% certainty if the tool will work with every vehicle from every country listed in the menus. I live in the USA and I have successfully used XTOOL scan tools on vehicles sold in this country. Some people have claimed there were problems with certain makes/models but I have not experienced any trouble, personally.
      2) When you pay for a new subscription, you get updates for every make/model of vehicle listed in the tool, along with software/firmware for the tool itself. And it's not just updates once a year when new models come out. There are updates coming out almost every day. Every time the software engineers streamline something, fix a glitch, add new functions, etc, etc. they put out another update. They are constantly updating the tool. If you goa month or two without updating, you'll probably see 70-100 updates waiting to be installed.
      Thanks for the questions.

If your cell phone has "hot spot" capability where it can share it's wireless connection via WIFI with other wireless devices, then yes... you can update the D7 over your cell phone's network. Just keep in mind, a lot of the "vehicle customization" stuff is dependent on the vehicle that you're plugged into at any given time. Just because you have full control of a certain function with one make/model does does NOT mean you will have that full control on EVERY make/model. If a vehicle manufacturer programmed an on/off option for the seat belt warning alarm on a given certain vehicle, then the scan tool will show that option on that vehicle. On the other hand, if the manufacturer did NOT program an on/off option for the seat belt alarm, then the scan tool will NOT show that option on that vehicle. Again, it's 100% dependent on the vehicle's computer and how it's programed from the manufacturer.

      No, the D8 cannot do performance enhancements, either. These are scan tools deigned to aid technicians and car owners with repairs and some small customizations. (if those small customizations are already programmed into the vehicles computer to begin with, from the factory) Scan tools are NOT performance tuners. If you're looking to change your engine tuning parameters (fuel/air/boost/ignition timing/shift points/etc) then you need a "tuner" of some sort that contains "tuning software" and has the ability to flash new custom "tunes" into he factory computer. I don't know if a single scan tool, regardless of brand, that can re-tune your engine parameters.

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Před rokem +1

      The D7 in this video is a corded scan tool. Meaning it has a cord that runs from the scan tool to the vehicle's OBD2 port (otherwise known as the DLC, or "data link link connector") so any time the scan tool is plugged into the vehicle's DLC it is receiving a charge. In theory, the scan tool battery should never go dead as long as it's plugged into a vehicle. Since this video was made, they now offer the D7 in a Bluetooth version.... so in that case, the scan tool is 100% dependent on it's internal battery. I have NOT had the pleasure to test and review the bluetooth D7 so I do not know if they made the battery bigger in that version. And lastly, I have recently heard they are now developing another newer version of the D7 that has not been released yet..... so, no telling what that battery will be in the newest version. We'll find out when it's released, I guess. Thanks for the question.

      @@Anthony-qj7qe You're welcome! On a side note.... I hear the new D7 that is still in development will have a "WiFi" connection between the scan tool and the vehicle instead of a "bluetooth" connection. That doesn't really sound like a big deal at first but the speed of WiFi is MUCH faster than bluetooth.... WiFi is AT LEAST 20 times faster than bluetooth, and probably much faster than that with modern hardware/firmware. As of right now, the ONLY scan tool that I know of that uses a WiFi connection is the $5000 Autel MS Ultra. I'm sure there are other really high end scan tool that use WiFi like probably Snap-on but to see a D7 use WiFi will be a REALY big deal in the consumer grade scan tool market. My guess is..... The new D7 will probably be the first consumer grade scan tool to use a WiFi connection...... and hopefully it will have a larger battery, too. But keep in mind, we don't want XTOOL to improve the D7 TO MUCH, or the price will go up.... which will quickly erase the affordability of the D7, which is the main reason why it was such a great seller to begin with. You're better off going into the diagnosis menu, and then going into a specific module and looking at actuation tests, and special functions to see just exactly what the scan tool is capable of doing, on the specific vehicle that you're plugged into. (because it absolutely changes from vehicle to vehicle) Those "special functions" shortcuts never seem to work for me. For an example: I tried to change the tire size on a 2014 Dodge pick-up truck. The exact version shown in this video was the first software update that contained the new features and functions. The version shown in this video is from last summer..... and it has probably changed (updated) 100 times since this video was recorded. As long as you have AT LEAST the software version in this video, then you have the upgrade. Is your software version numerically higher than the one in this video?

  • @ThePeopleVerse

      @SlipFitGarage  Před rokem

      As long as the version you have is numerically the same or higher than what is shown in this video, then you have the updated version. I have no idea where they list the newest version on the internet.... maybe somewhere on XTOOL's website. I knew the version number specifically for this video because the person who I deal with at XTOOL sent it to me via email.

    Does d7 do abs bleed and linear valve offset calibration on Toyota Prius ?

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Před rokem

      Yes, the D7 can bleed ABS brake modules on vehicles that are programmed with that function. As for the linear valve offset calibration on Toyota Prius's..... I can't honestly say either way. I don't usually work on Toyota Prius's. However, the update featured in this video basically gave the D7 the same functionality as the D8 so if I was a betting man, I'd say yes it does have that ability. The only way to know that information for sure is to ask XTOOL directly. Thanks for the question.

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Před 10 měsíci

      I guarantee this tools works 98% of the time. There are THOUSANDS of happy D7 customers in this world who did NOT leave a negative review. The negative reviews you're reading online are usually a result of people having no idea how scan tools work.... then they leave a negative review as if it's the scan tool's fault. As for features not working.... yep, that's true, and just another example of people not knowing how scan tools work. I can't force a DPF regen on a gasoline vehicle. I can't recenter a steering angle sensor on a vehicle that doesn't have a steering angle sensor to begin with. I cant use the EPB function on a vehicle that does not have electronic parking brakes. The BMS feature does not work on vehicles that don't use a BMS in the first place, etc, etc.... Do you see where I am going with this? Just because the SCAN TOOL is capable of all those features, that does NOT mean the VEHICLE you're currently plugged into can support all those features. With all that said, NO scan tool is perfect. Even the $5K Snap on scan tools have problems every no and again on certain makes/models. The D7 series is one of the best values in the entry level scan tool world. This tool will do 98% of everything a DIYer could possibly ever need. The newest model is the D7S. Be sure to check it out. I will have a video about this new model coming out either this weekend, or the next. Thanks for the comment.

      I agree..... but they have to save some functions for their higher end scan tools or nobody would buy those. They can't put EVERYTHING in their cheapest scanner...... At least not in 2022. Give it five or more years and there will be SO MANY Chinese scan tool manufacturers competing to have the "best" (i.e. cheapest, with most functions) scan tool on the market that eventually ALL scan tools will have ALL functions.

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Před rokem +2

      The XTOOL D7 is an OBD2 scan tool. It is designed to work on any vehicle sold in the USA from 1996 until today in 2023. (The OBD2 standard is mandated by US Federal law) If your 2005 Nissan was manufactured for sale in the USA, then yes, it SHOULD work. I say "should" because EVERY scan tool has pros and cons. Every scan tool can struggle on certain make & models.... even the 5K+ Snap-on scan tools can will struggle with certain vehicles. So, with all that said, Yes.... it SHOULD work fin on your vehicle. I do not have a 2005 Nissan to plug my D7 into to verify for you, but you should be fine. Jump in, the water is fine! Thanks for the question.

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  Před rokem +1

      @ilarizan
      If the vehicle you are working on has the ability to run an injector balance test, then the D7 should be able to command that test. The vehicle has to already have that ability from the factory programmed into the vehicle's computer, if not then the scan tool will not be able to command it.

    • @SlipFitGarage

      No.... ECU coding, programming, and configuration are completely different from tuning. This scan tool does NOT allow custom tuning.....
