  • A Professional Automotive Mechanic reviews a scan tool that is the higher version of the previous Ultimate scan tool which has even more features.
In this video and per your request I review the Xtool D8 in a follow up to the previous Ultimate scan tool video when I reviewed the D7.

in addition to the D8 review, I also update my recommendation for the ultimate basic scan tool from the Bluedriver to the Xtool A30, A30D and A30M.
I work on cars professionally and I deal with OEM level scan tools. Aftermarket scan tools are plenty and available however which one is the best for DIY mechanics? As I test more and more scan tools I will update my recommendations for the Ultimate scan tool.

I love your channel. I have been watching it for the last six months and have found it very useful. Your videos on oil changes, transmission fluid change, how to buy original parts on less price, car buying guide, change spark plugs, break-in periods and scan tools have all enhanced my knowledge. I am not an advanced DYI mechanic but am an amateur DYI mechanic working hard to gain knowledge so that I may do all the maintenance on my family vehicles. I think D8 would be a great tool to use for buying used car besides using it for tpms id reset, key programming, live data analysis, transmission fluid temperature check and general car maintenance.

Also, I want to mention that when the D8 is connected to a car via the OBDII connector it is charging itself. We still didn't charge the D8 with the charger that came in the box, there is no need. The updates are very frequent also... Great device overall!

Another great review ADM and I am an advanced DIY mechanic and love watching your honest reviews. I like this type video on how to use these tools. I hope you do more this. My Blue Driver works OK but it’s doesn’t have the advanced features needed to maintain the newer cars. Bi-Directional control is a game changer and needed to fix / diagnosis the newer cars. It’s sad that there are so many computers on these cars nowadays. One of my cars is a Pontiac vibe which is a twin to the matrix. The dome light is controlled by a door pin switch. On my 2003 suburban the done light is controlled by the door latch with has gears inside the latch to determine if it’s open or closed! So much complexity for something as simple as door open indicator. Keep doing these great videos and I try to never miss your videos as I’m learning new things/tips. Some more customer problem stories would be fun too as people need to understand the stress mechanics are under dealing with customers and sometimes the dealership owners! 8-). God Bless and I’m so glad you listened to your wise wife and started this channel!

I am an advanced DIY mechanic. Had been holding off on purchasing the D7 as my new scan tool for this review and am glad I did as the features I was concerned about are covered on the D8. Been a big believer in Toyota since our family 93 Camry turned 780,000 before one of my sisters got into an accident that totaled it. I'm even known as the Toyota guy in my area since I have a few and convinced most of my friends and family members to make the switch as well; although because of this I was somewhat volunteered to maintain and repair them all including some other makes. I definitely don't mind as I've enjoyed working on cars since I was 13 and the added revenue from time to time is always nice. I'll wait to see if I come up with a little luck on the raffle but looks like the D8 checks all the boxes and will be my next scan tool. Thanks again for your thorough review AMD it was greatly appreciated!

My Bosch 1300 served me well, but it's time to go bi-directional. It's mind-boggling. The manufactures, the models, the levels, the upgrades... there's no end to it. I don't want to cut myself short and I don't want to pay for stuff I'll never use. I drew my line at the J-box. I'm pretty much down to the D8 and the Thinktool Pros... which will soon be replaced by the Thinktool Master2. But if I go with that, then there's the question of who to buy it from. I ended up with the Topdon Phoenix Plus. It's been a great tool. I paid just over a grand. This tool has taught me a lot. Mostly, how little I actually know. Now that I'm learning I see how important a scope is, so that's next. I'll probably go with Topdon again because I now trust the quality and they seem to be the most affordable. I don't make a living with these tools, so I feel like these are the top end of the DIY scale and bottom of the more advanced equipment. Kinda crazy to spend more for tools than I do for my vehicles, but I enjoy doing this stuff. Eventually I hope to make it a lucrative hobby and at least get something back. Good luck.

I can see a D7 and D8 would be able to help a great deal. I started deep into car diagnoses when I got a chronic, dreaded CHECK VSC error on the dashboard. That took me into MAF, throttle body, short-term and long-term fuel trim, air-fuel ratio, fuel injection system, fuel vapor canister, fuel cap, upstream and downstream O2 sensors, catalytic converters, etc. Then that took me into all the potential tests and fixes for each of those components, from smoke test to fuel injection system clearn, paint thinner in the gas tank, etc. A simple $30 bluetooth OBDII dongle did help a great deal to pinpoint a specific error codes and idenfying potential fixes. Due to the limited BT bandwidth, the live data analysis can only be done with low fidelity and therefore, harder to pinpoint the problem.

The biggest headache was the exhaust leak; three different shops tried welding to plug the leak but each time only fixed the problem temporarily.
