      MeGusta100 Unofficially yes. The Prince of Orleans, who said he didn't support Charlie Hebdo because of its provocations towards the Muslims and all what was liberal. (He did of course say as well that killing them was barbarian), is in fact still the Crown Prince of France since his father was it, before him.

      MeGusta100 Constitutional monarchs, being above politics, can be a focus of national unity. With the exception of avowedly republican parties, a monarch can have the allegiance of the whole people. Can any president make that claim? Vive le Roi de France.

    • @MrComric
      @MrComric Před 9 lety +3

      Actually some French presidents could do that. Have a thought about president Charles de Gaulle who united the country in times of war, or Churchill who did quite the same in WW II in the UK.

    I love this beautiful anthem. It has an individual, a historical figure, representing an entire nation, vowing loyalty to the fatherland and a will to expel tyranny. Very suitable for the Dutch, one of the most benign and likable nations on earth, one that has virtually made the bottom of the sea a prosperous country with tulips and football fields. An amazing yet humble country-the very epitome of progress!
    I find the Netherlands the cultural centre of the West. So did the Russians back in time.

    The music is some of the most beautiful I've ever heard. The words are strange. One does not expect the sovereign of a foreign land being mentioned in one's national anthem even in a historical context. The second verse is much more appropriate. I think they should change the words of the first verse to something directed to the monarch as symbol of the nation much as Great Britain has with "God Save The Queen" (or King as appropriate) and like England's monarch, Holland's monarch should not sing the words but rather stand as they are directed to him (her) as symbol of the nation, her history, her tradition, her laws and especially her people

    • @harpalk8096

      I did find it odd to see the king singing the national anthem

    • @Xfranman
      @Xfranman Před 9 lety

      Of course, because in your neck of the woods, the only person (aside from foreigners) who would not be sing your national anthem would be Her Majesty the Queen. I often feel sympathy for her at large official public gatherings when all eyes are on her as the anthem is sung to her by all, even her own royal husband and children. One of the most incredible times was at the marriage of the Prince of Wales to Princes Diana when HM stood as both versions were sang in a striking arrangement. The melody for the Dutch National Anthem is, as I said, incredibly beautiful. I'd love to see a good Dutch poet come up with some new words directed to the Monarch as symbol of the nation and excluding the reference to the King of Spain

    • @harpalk8096
      @harpalk8096 Před 9 lety +1

      Francis Moran I do agree. When the Prince and Princess of Wales got married the national anthem was sung beautifully. I also like the one sung at the proms in the royal Albert hall, Her Majesty has supposedly enjoyed the version sung at the proms.

    • @gordywestmids
      @gordywestmids Před 9 lety +4

      Francis Moran There is a very good reason why the national anthems are treated differently in The Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The Dutch monarch is effectively a civil servant elected into a secular office - hence it was possible for both his mother and grandmother to abdicate. The words of the Dutch national anthem make it a 'people's anthem' that can be sung by the whole Dutch nation including their secular ruler. By contrast, Queen Elizabeth II was annointed with Holy Oil, enthroned and crowned in a religious ceremony in which she was dedicated to serve for the whole of her life. British kings die 'in office.' As the UK National Anthem is a prayer for the Queen's long life and happiness it would be quite inappropriate for her to sing it. I hope this helps you.

    • @Xfranman
      @Xfranman Před 9 lety +1

      How is a Dutch monarch elected? Isn't the Dutch monarch crowned in the national Lutheran Cathedral? British monarchs are free to abdicate if only after ascendancy to the throne. King Edward VIII was king although never anointed. The coronation of a British monarch, though in a religious setting (usually Westminster) and including anointing is a combination of religious and secular elements. Clearly the emphasis is on anointing. This was the reason Elizabeth I was loath to behead her cousin Mary Queen of Scots. But it didn't prevent his knights and nobles from doing away with Edward II. I suspect Elizabeth II would consider herself a civil servant even though not elected. She certainly plays a (extremely limited and largely ceremonious) secular role in government. And she is not obligated to serve until death. Of course, she no doubt will. But she could abdicate for Charles today. Charles may not abdicate until she dies. But he could do so within the hour of her death if he so chose. Of course, if the Queen chose to sing her national anthem she'd be compelled to alter all the pronouns. She'd look silly.

I learnt the Dutch National Anthem ON-LINE, for God's sake - I bet they'd expect the Netherlanders to sing 'God Save the Queen' (in English!)....Where's the mutual respect? 'Embarressd' in the UK.

    • @Xfranman
      @Xfranman Před 9 lety +4

      Gaggy Mott The Prince of Wales most certainly would NOT expect the King of Holland to sing God Save The Queen, the English national anthem. It would be entirely inappropriate for King Wilhelm to do so. Why would a sovereign of another nation sing "God Save OUR gracious Queen"? An anthem is a kind of "pledge of allegiance". One does not sing allegiance to a foreign land. Prince Charles would not sing words of the Dutch national anthem referring to Dutch history. Again, it would be inappropriate.

    • @gaggymott9159
      @gaggymott9159 Před 9 lety

      Francis Moran God save the Queen is the National (and Royal) Anthem of the UNITED KINGDOM, and other Realms and Territories, not just England. As for a 'pledge of allegiance', I assume flying a Union Flag, which in essence, is the same thing in another country, is forbidden too then? You'll note also the Dutch Anthem also 'admires the King of Spain' - Whats the problem?

No, I would say flying a flag is not the same as a pledge of allegiance since many nations such as England (yes, England) and Canada do not hold their flag in the type of esteem say the United States does. This is largely because our head of state is also our head of government and head of a political party. A monarch is generally the head of state and apolitical center of national symbolism and patriotic fervor in a nation which has one. I did indeed take note of the Dutch anthem's admiration of the King of Spain. It is in a historical reference. It strikes me as very odd that one nation with a monarch would reference the monarch of another in its anthem, even historically. It must be somewhat awkward when the King of Spain is visiting Holland or the King of Holland visits Spain for state visits and the anthems are exchanged. As a foreigner, it is my observation - a view only meaning no disrespect - that Holland might well consider rewording their first verse to acknowledge their monarch in the manner of Britain's anthem and that their monarch, like Britain's, refrain from singing while the anthem is played recognizing the national patriotic living symbol that is a nation's monarch. That's all

      It is NOT Britain's National Anthem...IT IS THE UNITED KINDOM'S NATIONAL ANTHEM!!!!! Just as the Union Flag is that of the United Kingdom...Oh my word!

      You do know, do you not, that the United Kingdom is The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland? God Save The Queen is the BRITISH national anthem. Oh my word! What a fuss budget. The United Kingdom IS GREAT BRITAIN or BRITAIN. Folks don't write the entire name out all the time. No need to get your knickers in a twist

    The dutch monarchy is ruined. The current king, Willem-Alexander is only 1/8th dutch and the rest german. He married an argentinian. The next heir will be 1/16th dutch. How wonderful. The monarchy should be abolished, it's only purpose is for ceremonial reasons and national pride which it can't even undertake. The Netherlands should go back to being the great republic it once was!

      Time to learn some psychology ;) Arabic Emirs and Kings (may Allah be praised) don't give the same respect to presidents as they do to Kings and Queens. So if we go on trade missions with the King, we're more likely to succeed ;) Long live the King !

      Yes! I agree with you, the emirs respect other nations with similar governments. Why not have a king who is a true dutchman!!!!!
