On sent cette ferveur tout en retenue, propre aux Néerlandais, qui nous paraissent souvent très policés et sages, nous qui avons du sang Latin, mais n'oublions jamais que ce sont de grands voyageurs et de grands conquérants ! What a beautiful combination of Psalm 134-3 and the anthem. I‘ve never heard both of it combined, and especially not in such an harmonic way. I thought it has to be sung that way.

You speak it quite well. Staphorst is one of the last few villages which aren't as americanized. As a result there is still traditional clothing. Correctly spelled it is: "Ik houd ook van de oude hoofddoekjes" (I also love the old headwear)

Yes you are correct. There is a story (I dont now if it's thrue or false), that prisoners in Scheveningen of the Dutch resitance group started singing (Het Wilhelmus). They did that just before there brothers where taken away for execution.
Are you a member of the 'Gemeende' in Staphorst? They remind me of the various Protestant Anabaptist groups we have in the US and Canada Amish, Mennonite and Hutterites...they wear simple but plain attire, although the Hutterites are slightly more decorative indicating either their matrimonial attire and/or 'leuten' such as 'Darius-leute' or 'Schmieder-leuter'
No I am not a member of the Staphorst community. In a way they are compareble with the groups in the U.S.. The main difference is that the Staphorst community isnt wearing the attire al the time. They do it mainly on special occasions.
I find them most interesting. There's another similar Protestant group from northern Italy called Waldensians, they too are like that and wear their attire also for such occasions as well. I told my boyfriend they're considered older Protestants before the the big movement in the 1500s, about the time of the Crusades, I think. The best way to describe them would be 'Italian Baptists'...LOL They were severely persecuted by Catholic and civil authorities, if disease and famine didn't wipe them out. They wound up settling in parts of France and Switzerland as a result. I just read how Pope Francis visited one of their communities and churches recently in a spirit of reconciliation and healing, making a public apology and even delivering a special joint-sermon with their leaders and ministers during their services. I found that quite nice of him to do this.

What is the history behind the mentioning of "den koning van Hispanje"? The King of Spain. I know that way back Spain was ruling Netherlands, but I find it strange to mention the Spanish monarch in the todays "modern" National Anthem. But I'm quite sure this has some kind of historic explanation. Anyway, As a Norwegian, I love the Norwegian Anthem, but yes, The Duch Anthem is very, very beautiful.
Song is about William of orange, it's written from his pov. It's basically the song justifying the opposition against the king of Spain who was seen as a 'god'. He says he was always loyal but he needs to oppose him because of the horrible things he is doing in the Netherlands, Spanish inquisition and killing of protestants. Also fun fact he sings he is from German blood (he was a German prince). Furthermore he spoke french and very little Dutch haha!
Addendum to Tiliad's comment; Back in those days, a monarch was considered literally chosen by God himself. Otherwise, how would a mere mortal reach such an illustrious position? As such, Wilhelmus was duty-bound to refer to his lawful ruler as chosen by God, and by proxy, would have (semantically) considered his war against his superior as a war against God himself, were it not for his convictions that God is above us mortals, and none who praise Him deserve subjugation and enslavement, Protestant rebel or loyal Papist. That's why ''The king of Spain, I hath always honored''. He didn't believe it, he just had to say it so everyone else wouldn't lose their shit.
