Everyone has trauma. Trauma is considered to be the baggage we carry around with us that is unresolved. The emotional responses to stressful situations that we’ve not yet dealt with. And for comic book superheroes and supervillains we’ll find no lack of trauma lurking beneath the surface. For them, their trauma is pretty much what has shaped them into who they are today. The emotional scars that they have earned is what pushed them to become a hero or a criminal mastermind. I guess that is a supers way of working through their problems, instead of facing them in a personal, more direct manner. Instead they use their trauma to inspire them to help or harm others. Despite the controversy of Batwoman TV series, I think Alice's origin is pretty dark. She was kidnapped by August Cartwright and he traps her in a basement throughout her childhood. He forces her to become with Mouse. When she tries to call for her father to save her, Cartwright and ripped off the cord from phone. Once Kate and her father showed up, Cartwright forced Beth to stay quiet and told her father that mouse was pranking him. I don't remember what episode it was, but when Cartwright's mother shows up to live with them. Alice treated her with kindness but his mother was jealous of the Alice's beauty, so she treated her with disrespect. Alice became a servant for Cartwright's mother by giving her tea, but was being picky about the tea being too sweet and hot.
This happen for 9 years until Alice snaps and end up burning her Cartwright's mother alive. She used Mabel's (Cartwright's mother) oxygen tank and I think a match as a flamethrower.

The original Rocket Racoon origin story is truly offensive to people with mental issues as they are called mindless, loonies and made to be childlike who needs toys.
Maybe they'll retcon it into something less offensive.

May I suggest in the inevitable third list, some more obscure characters. Like, I don't know, I'm sure there are some deeply tragic figures in the Astro City universe (haven't read all of that yet). I'm just thinking of stories I _haven't_ heard of that would be cool to learn about. Maybe that defeats the purpose of a "Top 10" list, idk.
More obscure characters in a part 3 of this list would be good to see. Please keep on asking.
I wonder "What if" Dr, Manhattan's girl friend also went through the same process he went through that turned him into what he eventually became. Would that have changed anything. Would it have made some thing worse or better. That sounds like a nice "What if" that should be explored.

To a pessimistic person Spider-man may seem "depressed" but I assure you, I have never seen a more cheerful and optimistic Hero. I've admired Spider-Man for all my 16 years of life and I can say without a doubt he has always inspired me with his sense of responsibility and optimism.

A quibble for #5, while I agree with the idea of your choice, Dr Manhattan is a 'retread' of a different character (in fact all Watchmen characters are)
Capt Atom (fornerlty Charlton, later DC) climbed into a missle and became 'trappped'. in contact with control he advised them of this and called for a delay, onoy to be horrifyed as they refused and told him 'no delay is authorised' and continued the countdown. shot to the edge of space he didnt have any hope of survival particularly as the missle was carrying an nuclear warhead, for an 'upper atmosphere' test. that blast changed his dying body to energy, which resulted in his needing a 'containment suit' after he managed io 'return tio earth.
for me that is way 'darker' than what Jon suffered (given his was quick, and he shouldnt have gone back in the first place)

Raven and Gamorra are sexy badasses in their own right. I was surprised that Starfire wasn't on this list. Her origins are pretty dark too. Forced into a life of Slavery thanks to her sister. And experimented on by her captors. Alongside her sister. And when she helps her out of that her sister betrays her and ambushes her. Now that is dark.

A bit of a tangent but my favourite Iron Man armour was the mark 1 that only lasted a single issue, closely followed by the silver centurion that was around for a while from issue 200. This is partly because the silver/grey is much closer to the real colour of iron but also just a personal colour preference. I couldn't stand the mark 2 golden avenger armour but the iconic red and gold of mark 3 and about a billion others is ok.
