    Freddie wrote a song in Japanese too. He loved the culture. It's called La Japonaise, and is on the Barcelona album. Montserrat Caballe sings it with him and it is really beautiful. He also sang some in Spanish with her in that album : Ensueno, the song that came out of Exercises in Free Love.

    This wasn't their first trip here. They made 7 trips plus Freddie did a lot of shopping for Garden Lodge. They taught themselves the language, and flew their interpreter to London to make sure they had the correct words and meaning according to one of the books. The Japanese were their biggest fans.

    Such a beautiful gesture of love and gratitude! In 1975, they first went on tour in Japan and (no kidding) it was like Beatlemania- they were greeted at the airport by tons of fans, got lots of gifts, etc. Basically Japan was the first country to fully embrace and acknowledge Queen as the Rock Gods they still are. Basically Queen really knows how to show love, respect and gratitude to fans. Before the whole lockdown took place, Queen and Adam Lambert managed to perform in Asia, New Zealand and Australia earlier this year and Brian May sang this song while in Japan and the crowds went just as nuts as ever! While its gorgeous live, they never sang the whole song through. The studio lyric version is also worth a listen, its beautiful!

    Roger twirls his sticks to keep time and he does it all the time, it is like a pianist lifting up their hand during a musical rest. Brian wrote this song, I have always thought he fell in love with someone in Japan, kind of an instant attraction but knowing he would need to be moving on to be with his family and his life in his home of England. Brian did say he loved Japan. The song was on the album Day At The Races which came out in 1976. I love this song, it is so beautiful and the Japanese fans treated Queen like huge celebrities before any other country reacted to them in that way.

    Freddie had severe voice problems in the Japan shows 1979, it was the end of a long tour. In this song he's sounding only a bit hoarse here and there, but in other songs he's really struggling. Anyway, his voice recovered after that, and we have wonderful recordings like those from Montreal 1981.

    Another great reaction. I'm so glad you liked it. It's one of my favorites. Queen loved their Japanese fans. I recall telling you that Japan changed everything for Queen when they first toured there. On November 24, 1991, a million million tears were shed in Japan (and a billion billion around the world) which continue to today when Brian sings Teo Torriatte to the old and young fans in the Japanese audiences who still sing their hearts out with this song. The words were prophetic.

  • @yvrkid7070
    @yvrkid7070 Před 4 lety +1

    Love, love , love this song. The studio version sounds like a choir. You have to listen to it! When Queen first toured Japan after the Sheer Heart Attack album in April 1975 apparently over 3,000 fans showed up at the airport. Freddie loved everything Japanese (except raw fish) and collected Japanese art. This is a thank you to their fans written by Brian. This is just one example of how much Queen loved their fans. There is some great footage on youtube of interviews in Tokyo. This is 1979 and the song was released in 1976 on the Day At the Races album and was only sung in concert in Japan. Brian is very good at languages but they had a Japanese translator take Brian's chorus and translate it. Let Us Cling Together is the English translation. Check out their Budapest concert and you will see Brian and Freddie with Mary Austin learning a Hungarian folk song for their fans.

They had cameras set up to show him, but you never see him more than a few measures at a time. The Wembley concert used more than one camera to KEEP the focus on Roger, and intercut shots of him like usual for the final film, but they also released 20 minutes of ENTIRE songs just from Roger’s drum kit. That’s what makes it stand out.

    To be fair, lots of people can sing in a foreign language.... I mean, how many people can sing songs in English without being a native speaker?
    One thing that astonishes me, though, is the fact that he sang Ensueño un Spanish (it's the final version of Exercises in free love) and his accent is practically flawless. Except for one little moment, you would never say he isn't a native speaker.
    Also, it's beautiful to see the audience singing along, but the studio version is so rich too. You can hear there a lot of Japanese musical touches.

    Someone please tell me if this is incorrect.... but I'm SURE that I remember reading: When Freddie was writing this song, he actually had the woman who was the band's translator (from their previous visit to Japan) flown into the UK, just to work on the Japanese lyrics with him 😲

    The studio version winds up to a powerful bridge before cutting back to the chorus and instrumental fade out - pity that they left that out on the live version. Have a listen if you get chance
