  • For this video, I'll be reacting to a song by another new band to me, LOVEBITES! Even though I didn't do any research on the band, I thought I had an idea of what I was about to listen to, but I definitely didn't expect what I heard! Whether this is your first listen to LOVEBITES too or you're a seasoned veteran to their music, this isn't one you'll want to miss!

Lovebites are the Queens of shred - their two guitarists, Midori and Miyako, are insanely talented and do crazy solos and harmonies on EVERY SINGLE one of their songs. The bassist, Miho, and drummer, Haruna, put out this insanely fast tempo and on top of that you have the powerful vocals of Asami. You just witnessed the best all female heavy metal band of all time, who rival all the male bands too. Give these ladies 5 more years and they will be legendary like Maiden, Priest, and Metallica. You've only scratched the surface my friend. Now do their heavier song "Set the World on Fire" and prepare to be mind blown again with the guitar solos.

    LOVEBITES - Holy War lyrics:
Look at those black clouds, it’s going to rain blood
People live in fear, covered in mud
Singing oh Gloria to change the prophecy
    We are the metal warriors
    Fighting the darkness for sisters
There is a thousand, a thousand of evils
Hush, do not wake up Satan’s devils
Singing Hallelujah to save our majesty
    We are the metal warriors
    Fighting the darkness for brothers
    Shining blade and burning heart
Into the Gates of Hell we march
Immortal soul, let there be light
    Into the Eye of Heaven
    Eagles at a holy war
    Fly higher than the sun
We are one for all and all for one forevermore
Kingdom of Heaven, never shall we fall
    Reincarnation, wait for your call
Singing oh, Gloria to change the prophecy
    We are the metal warriors
    Fighting the darkness for sisters
    Morning star and dying moon
Into the Gates of Hell we march
Mighty soul, let there be hope
    Into the Eye of Heaven
    Eagles at a holy war
    Fly higher than the sun
Stand up in the name of the God of heavy metal
What do we live for? What do we fight for, tonight?
But the world is beautiful, worth fighting for
Only have one thing on our mind
    Facing the fate, holy war
Singing Hallelujah to save our majesty
    We are the metal warriors
    Fighting the darkness for brothers
    Shining blade and burning heart
Into the Gates of Hell we march
Immortal soul, let there be light
    Into the Eye of Heaven
    Eagles at a holy war
    Fly higher than the sun
We are one for all and for one forevermore
What do we live for? What do we fight for, tonight?
But the world is beautiful, worth fighting for
Only have one thing on our mind
    Facing the fate, holy war

Yes, those twin lead guitarists are real shredders, but their soulful solos on ballads are phenomenal too. Try Epilogue from the album Daughters of the Dawn live 2019. A Frozen Serenade from Ride for Vengeance will show you another aspect of them. Believe me, they are incredibly versatile and super good in every aspect.

Nobody expects what they see and hear first time watching Lovebites, especially live. These ladies are, no bullshit, the BEST at what they do. They have the ability to replicate studio material so perfectly live that many fans can’t decide which they prefer, studio original or live. They usually choose “both”. 50 tracks laid down to date and there is no bad track. Not one. You’re going to enjoy everything we throw at you. From this spring’s short, Covid restricted tour, I really recommend “Set the World on Fire”, which is an official release. If you thought Holy War was good get ready to go next-level amazed. Great reaction.

Congratulations on finding the best new metal band to come along in decades. In their five years of existence as a band, they set a standard that easily puts them on a par with the greatest bands of metal’s golden age. Other reviewers have described them as alien superheroes disguised as young women, angels sent to save us, princesses of metal, and angry bridesmaids. Whatever the description, I think one can say they have given metal a badly needed makeover and maybe a new lease on life. They have themselves said that part of their mission is to save heavy metal from darkness and obscurity. Some background:
They were formed in 2016 from the remnants of a legendary all-girl Japanese metal band called Destrose (yes, all-girl metal has been a thing in Japan since at least 1981). Miho (bass, chief headbanger and soul of the band) had a vision of a new band in the style of the greatest European bands of the golden age of metal. She recruited her former bandmate Haruna (drums, 4'9" “pocket nuclear reactor”); they needed two world-class guitarists, and so they went and found Midori and Miyako, who were with other bands. The whole group then found Asami, the singer, who was doing soul and blues at the time (she also trained in ballet). Miho and Miyako have composed most of their music, in collaboration with Mao, the lead composer of another band called Lightbringer, but Midori has also been getting into the act. Asami writes a lot of the lyrics.
They studied all the great historical metal bands going back to Purple and Sabbath, through Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Helloween, Slayer etc. and aced it all. They toured with Dragonforce in 2019, and word from those in attendance is that next time around, it will be the ladies headlining. They have incorporated some of the best of each of those bands into their arsenal, and at this point they’ve taken it to another level.
This is one of their usual first songs for reactors, and rightly so--you get a good sense of the band. They do everything from soulful power ballads to heavy thrash, and almost every song includes face-melting solos by Miyako and Midori. The two guitarists are quite different in style and tone. Midori (blonde ponytail) is the extrovert and speed demon; Miyako is the introvert, with the more soulful feel. Midori uses a cleaner tone, Miyako uses more distortion, pinch harmonics and pedal effects. The contrast makes their duets rich and dynamic. As another reviewer said, "It seems criminal these two are allowed to be in the same band." Either one can smoke most of the shredders in the classic metal bands.
They are generally best live. Here are some you should definitely check out:
Their most recently posted live clip, “Set the World on Fire” czcams.com/video/99zsH6iG_6c/video.html.
Other live songs to check out are "Edge of the World" and "We the United", back to back: czcams.com/video/sl0-U-ykJCU/video.html They form an incredible journey from darkness and despair to light and hope.
Also, “Empty Daydream”, which starts as a ballad and becomes a real rocker: czcams.com/video/lXh_uMM94jU/video.html
Miyako is also a professional-level classical concert pianist, and was headed for a career in classical music, before picking up the guitar. If you want to see what she can do on the piano, watch “Swan Song” WITH the prelude, which is Chopin’s “Revolutionary Etude”. Miyako wrote “Swan Song” using elements from several classical pieces including the Etude. This link should work: czcams.com/video/WBhtqgiXEA4/video.html; but if it is taken down, you can watch two clips back to back: czcams.com/video/hDBjiQI9cyc/video.html and czcams.com/video/uEsEWISc8Q0/video.html I promise, it’s worth it.
For a thrasher with heavy Metallica vibes, “Break the Wall” czcams.com/video/G021aP2ao6Y/video.html includes two gorgeous and completely contrasting solos by M&M.
For a heart-stopping ballad, “Epilogue” czcams.com/video/1ynnXDfEnnY/video.html (this includes a second song, your choice whether or not to react to both)
Finally, while it’s generally true their live clips are best, their MV’s are epic and worth seeing:
    "When Destinies Align" czcams.com/video/hLFelI93VkM/video.html
    "Glory to the World" czcams.com/video/-wJtD2XEXH4/video.html
    "Winds of Transylvania" czcams.com/video/HsE4Ub_Pjh8/video.html.
You'll get lots of suggestions, just one thing: don't bother with Bloodstock footage, the sound quality is poor. Best to take suggestions with actual links. Also, you can’t go wrong with any of their official clips. Welcome to the Wolf-Pack!

  • @thesaturdaymorningcowboy4198

    Wally,
Greetings from Texas and The Saturday Morning Cowboys! Great reaction! The fact that you did not do any prior research only enhanced your reaction because you came in with no preconceived notions.
Lovebites are arguably the best heavy metal band in the world at this time. They were launched by their awesome bassist, Miho, and their drummer extraordinaire, Haruna, both of who previously played in another all-female metal band called Destrose. Sadly, Lovebites' bassist, Miho, recently left the band due to personal issues after having lost her father a year or so ago. Lovebites are now on a temporary hiatus until they find and sign a new bassist.
Rounding out the lineup on vocals are Asami, who comes from an R&B singing background, Midori (blonde hair) a technical wizard on lead guitar, and Miyako (dark hair) musical genius on the other lead guitar. Miyako is also a world class concert pianist having been trained on piano since age 3 and she composes much of Lovebites' songs and music. You will eventually see Miyako shine on piano when you get around to watching their performance of "Swan Song with Chopin Intro."
You have just scratched the surface with Holy War. There are no bad Lovebites songs and they have about 50 or so published songs in audio and/or video format. Everyone seems to prefer their live concert and live studio performances over their music videos which have a feeling of being over-produced. Also to be avoided are their concert performances at Bloodstock where the audio engineers totally dropped the ball.
If you like the bass, then you'll really enjoy the lick laid down by Miho in "Scream for Me." You'll also be treated to a guitar duel of the ages between Midori and Miyako. Here's the link...

you found them, congrats! these women are serious. there is even a connection to nightwish: their albums and concertdiscs were all mixed and mastered at finnvox studios helsinki by the same people, who work for nightwish, amorphis, children of bodom etc. founded in 2016 they have a backcatalogue of around 50 songs. and there´s not a bad one, not even one filler. I would recommend everything from the three tokyo concerts (2019,2020,2020). and avoid material from bloodstock.

You really can't go wrong with Lovebites. They do everything from ballads to pure 80s thrash in the vein of Slayer and Metallica and they usually put in 2 solos and often a unison line or three. One song even have about 12 solos - Scream for me ;-) About 50 songs you can try and there really are very few lows.

One minor thing to note is that Miyako (the brunette guitarist), Midori (the blonde guitarist), and Miho (the former bass guitarist) are all tapping all three times in the front half of the song. It's just that the camera focus shifts each time.
I've noticed that Japanese rock and metal groups do a lot more bass guitar tapping than their American and European counterparts. BOH from Babymetal's Kami Band, MISA from BAND-MAID, Ogawa from Unlucky Morpheus, and Miyu from Asterism all do it.
As far as a recommendation goes, I'd have to recommend their first single, "Don't Bite the Dust." However, I'm going to recommend the live version that was recorded and released this year. Unfortunately there were restrictions of what both the band and crowd could do, but the video still looks and sounds great. Here's the link.

Japan is full of all female metal bands. Before joining LoveBites Asami (vocalist) sang Soul and R&B music. She never sang or heard of any metal bands in her life. The other members came from metal bands and have numerous metal influences. The bass player and Co founder, Miho, left the band this past August. Their last European tour was with Dragonforce and now they're on hiatus until they get another bass player. These ladies are on a whole different level. They're all masters of their craft. Their fanbase is called The Wolfpack. You should try Set The World On Fire. That's one of their more Thrash sounding songs. It sounds like a song Slayer would perform. They even do power ballads. They don't have a bad song. They even do a great Helloween Cover of Eagle Fly Free. LoveBites is definitely my favorite band and should be part of The Big Four now that Slayer is retired.
    Asami - Vocals
    Midori - Guitar
    Miyako - Guitar and Piano
    Haruna - Drums
Miho - Bass ( No longer with the band)

First, I second any Lovebites song recommended by other commenters, since there are no bad ones! Second, on the subject of all-female bands, I'd like to recommend the IMO best song by the Swedish band Ice Age who where founded in 1985 and (to my knowledge) the first all-female Thrash Metal band. This is "Instant Justice": czcams.com/video/7C8kK7lXZRQ/video.html

You are stepping into a rabbithole - and you will love it! Lovebites is the best (sadly, they just went on hiatus) but they will hopefully be back soon. Haruna has to wear those gloves; if she doesn't, the sticks will fly off into space. Another good one to listen to is Don't Bite The Dust (Live): czcams.com/video/oHnKGEj1CMc/video.html
There are many Japanese Female hard rock and metal bands; Here is a short list with a sample of each:
TRiDENT - Brand New World czcams.com/video/-GHnpr8Rq1E/video.html
    Mary's Blood - Marionette czcams.com/video/MLM2unV0kwU/video.html
Bridear - Light In The Dark czcams.com/video/UxSrOqAxaKw/video.html
    Band Maid - Manners czcams.com/video/-FWuMx_pkH4/video.html
Cyntia - Run To The Future czcams.com/video/6LbAmew4OZU/video.html
Destrose - Fenixx czcams.com/video/M7fkLtj3SVs/video.html (The drummer and bassist of this band became the founders of Lovebites)
    Nemophila - Dissention czcams.com/video/26aMuahxz8c/video.html
    Hagane - WintrySky czcams.com/video/FLxibhGlTGQ/video.html
Fate Gear - Headless Goddess czcams.com/video/tLQbsoKQN-0/video.html
    Aldious Sweet Temptation czcams.com/video/hraBdfH2xfI/video.html
This list is no where near comprehensive; new bands are coming out all the time. But these are some of the many songs on my favorites list and will give you some good exposure to the world of Japanese female bands. Enjoy!!!

"I wish there were more all-female metal bands" Welcome to the wonderful world of Japanese metal (in addition to Lovebites you have Nemophila, Mary's Blood, Aldious, Bridear, Fate-Gear, Hagane and (still rocking for over 35 years since the 80s) Show-Ya to name some of the best known. Expand it to Hard-Rock rather than just metal and you can add in Band-Maid, Gacharic Spin and Trident all of whom are equally epic musical talents to their metal sisters).
"I love the bass" Again welcome to Japan, pretty much all Japanese bassists can shred like a lead guitarist when they want to (even Tomomi of Scandal which is stylistically sort of a 21st century Japanese version of the Bangles). Many of them play 5 or even 6 strings too.
"seems like an epic concert" this was only the second song of an ~90minute set.

Not to mention the Gacharic Spin side project Doll$boxx, with Fuki from Unlucky Morpheus/Light Bringer on vocals.

    • @greggarvin2663
      @greggarvin2663 Před 2 lety

@@DShiflet01 I know they typically have completely separate setlists, but in my mind I still tend to think of Doll$box as Gacharic Spin with special guest Fuki and not a separate band, but since Doll$box definitely represents the metal side of GS, in this context I can see them as a separate entry on the metal list. Am curious if they ever do another Doll$box project whether they would include Yuri on drums with Hana on guitar (and possibly even Angie in some capacity) for a 6 (or 7) piece band, or if Hana would go back to drums to keep Doll$box at the same 5 members.
