As a former film student and a cinephile whose choices sadly lead her in a different direction, seeing a couple of recent q & a's and interviews with Luca has made me remember how much I loved cinema and has made me wanna watch films again. I could listen to this guy talk about movies forever.
Story of my life, these past few weeks
same!!!
Cinema is my first love. I'm a film student and an aspiring director. I agree, listening to directors talk about cinema always surges my interest even more! I would encourage you to start making films again, as you can see now is an important period for female directors in Hollywood. I hope, and I think, the future is bright for female directors! :)
I'm 40, and as far away from Hollywood as I can be, short of being on a different planet. But thank you for such lovely words, they warm my heart. And good luck with your endeavors.
I’ve only now seeped into this magnus opus called Call Me by Your Name. Saw the movie a year back but didn’t have all the buzz around it having seen it on television. For the last 4 days or so I’m soaking in all that is available on the movie, it’s cast and of course the director Luca. His words are so honest and genuine. How fortunate for Timothée and Arnie to have had him as their director.
Love Luca's statement...
" ... when I decided to let go ( control) , I find I have more control!
This is something we usually need to learn over and over again. Practice makes perfect!
This is an excellent interview. Luca's idea that without showing sex explicitly you invite more meaningful sensuality in the action is refreshing. He is so insightful and perceptive that he stands out.
❤
The thing is, we don't know what "sex" they had. Was it just kissing and rolling around; was intercourse involved and, if so, the roles each played would be an insight to their characters. A later scene has Oliver ask whether Elio would hold what happened that night against him. Huh? We don't know what he's talking about because we didn't learn enough about what happened or did not happen.
We do know that they lay down at 69 position and both have that manly fluid over their chests. So, we can contemplate from that:))))))))))) In addition, book gives very good source material:))))) Furthermore, Oliver asking Elio whether or not he would hold what happened that night against him means that Elio bottomed and was both physically and emotionally hurt:))))))
It didn't seem all that explicit to me by modern standards.
"Armie likes eggs, a lot" LOL got me crackin
Ooh my, is always a pleasure to listen to Luca speak about cinema.
A man who understands art and whom can express it poetically.
This director is deep. He triggered my memory 2 decades back in the most honest way.
He's an amazing and eloquent talent, for sure! Thanks so much for watching!
i wish i could be as intelligent, pure & meaningful as luca. ingenious
My God what an interesting man to listen to. Amazing film, amazing actors, amazing work.
The egg question this interviewer gives is not so far fetched. In the book, Elio like Luca is quite the people watcher. He studies as much as he admires and lusts after Oliver. He notices how he cracks open his hard boiled egg and how he makes a mess of things. In one part of the book, Elio reaches over to help Oliver prep his egg for consumption. This was an act of generosity, goodwill & Elio’s way to show he cared for him.
Yes! This was definitely a part of his attraction for Oliver in the book.
exactly
the interviewer makes some presumptions. The only love I've ever experienced was at 17 and I'm 52. I couldn't possibly experience the raw intensity of emotion I felt for another young man at that age now. I've had relationships but they were never that kind of total self-less love. They were companionable affectionate relationships but something completely different than what I experienced at 17. I never told myself, or any of them, otherwise.
Elio?
Thank you Luca for not showing the sex scene. It’s a lot more sexual without it. I watched the movie the second time and loved it even more. Absolutely adore Armie, Timothée and Luca.
I love Luca ❤ he's the best director out there if he doesn't win an Oscar I will be very sad!
Do not put your faith in such trinkets of deceit.
Luca is filled with a keen sense of introspection and an observance of life that is rare. When he looks, he wants to "see", really see and to take it all in.
Oscar didn’t deserve Luca. We audience love him, that means more:)
It might result strange but I almost teared up when I heard the Luca’s opinion about the audience. Such respect and compassion. It explains the quality of his work,
What an absolutely wonderful interview! Really insightful without being pretentious. Thank you!
I LOVE the movie and the best piece of art I have ever seen in my life. Having said that, the host of this show blew me away. I have never seen a host this involved and passionate and prepared. The best piece of interview I have seen. Wow. Best wishes.
Great interview. It's important to have someone who truly appreciate the film to ask the questions. I think the interviewer really hit the spot with the questions and comments on the movie! Thank you!
Compliments to the interviewer, you're really good at it and have a good voice. Luca... I admire this man, he seems so incredible and endlessly interesting. I could listen to him talk about movies for hours. Not only did I fall in love with this movie, I fell in love with its director a little bit. If only I could interview him one day!
Amazing reference to the end of the film (CMBYN) and reference to the other William Defoe film (Light Sleepers) - what if Defoe and Chalamet win the Oscars - that would be a nice 'full circle' moment!! CMBYN is a gorgeous film, heartbreaking but beautiful, I was all choked up by the end and could hardly move and watching the credits role and seeing Elio's emotions. I'm still reeling from it - 5 days later....
Dan O'B Agree. Never had I seen such a beautiful credit roll.
I felt the credits were a sudden intrusion into the scene, and detracted from it. Its timing came too soon, and the graffiti-like scrawl of the title was much too brash for such a beautifully sensitive moment.
That ending scene is everything 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Luca is such an eloquent and intelligent man, I am so impressed by his vision and the way he talks about movies and love. Can't wait to see what he does with Suspiria!
10:00 HE SAID SEQUAL OMG MY HEART
Nicole Mendoza Won't be out at least until 2020 :(
thomas261989 yes I know but it gives me some type of closure knowing their story is not yet over :)
Highly doubt it will happen in the end though. If it does it won't be until 2025 or after.
Very well put! I feel the same, Nicole!
The sequel to the book is out soon tho, so hopefully there will be one for the movie too! All three of them (Armie, Timmy and Luca) has said they'd do it in a heartbeat, so... :)
Looooved this interview so much. I adore this movie with all of my heart and to listen to people talk about it makes me feel so happy. I want to be Lucas' friend, I want him to be my psychologist
Luca I love you so much ! This man is so charming, intelligent and so in love with his craft ! And just his eyes reveal emotions ! Luca I would honestly love to meet you and have coffee and just talk with you for hours.
Brilliant man. One of the few that is able to capture the depths of our behavior. The passion of Love. Ahhh.
Luca is a freaking genius
I really enjoyed this exchange of thoughts about the making of the movie. I too was moved by the credit rolling scene of Elio's emotion. It wasn't difficult to know what was going through his mind.
Loved your questions! Not like the other redundant and soft questions on other interviews that nobody cares about.
Bless you Luca. What a great interview
Oh Luca you're adorable! It's already oscar nominated and 4 at that!
this is an ourstanding interview. Amazing job to both.
He's half Algerian? Woo represent!
What a beautiful interview! All my questions were answered!
So insightful. So authentic you are great Luca.
Amazing interview!! Luca’s great... the movie’ s great... just loved it ❤️ waiting for the Oscars
The interviewer has a wonderful voice for radio, but, boy, you have to be careful when interviewing - you often can’t help but give yourself away. He lead the interview with questions about sex, he ended it with his view that the love of Elio for Oliver was not real, and he, like so many, obsessed over “landing” answers. Nuance, subtlety, ambiguity, uncertainty - perhaps these should be subjects for teaching in American schools. CMBYN is a truly beautiful film: please stop trying to pigeon-hole it.
Hi q on cbc, in response to your asking Luca about Oliver's eating the soft-boiled egg that first breakfast (6:54 -) I feel the same way as you. And not only the egg... remember the apricot juice he gulped down in the library as Elio looked on. It's the same as partners who like, well you know. It's an acquired taste. For me, both of these are seduction scenes. Luca gave them freedom to put something of themselves into Oliver and Elio. Armie is married and knows more of seduction, I think, than Tim. Tim seems to, in other videos, have not that much experience in these matters. The film is loaded with seduction scenes. For me they began when Oliver fell prostrate onto Elio's bed. :) Let's just say, seduction is an art that not everyone gets. Apparently you do. __Lllater :)
Great interview! It's very weird but i really love his accent it's so melodic
So much wisdom.
"It's about a family. An organism of transformation."
the trees are definitely NOT as sexual as Elio&Oliver :D
nevertheless - my favourite interview with Luca Guadagnino concerning CMBYN
I just realized that the best sex scenes I've seen have all been about character-driven behavior and not just watching the act itself.
Could you give some examples?
I love Luca Guadagnino!!! Good interview.
What an interviewer ❤
Great Interview Master Luca, the wizard of Crema:)))))) !!!!!!!!
When Luca explains filmmaking I feel stupid because he makes it sound effortless.
Don't feel stupid. We're all learning, and if you can learn something from a pro like Luca, you're already smarter than most people out there.
I seldom trust in sequels, though I trust Luca on this one.
People are so basic and used to seeing sex in every movie that shows human relationships or “love”. This film is not about confusion, fetishes, sex or a simple adventure. This film is about the discovery of love, the strong hit by love, the strength of passion, the creation of bonds and connection between two people. The film would have nothing to gain if it showed sex between the characters. The film is precisely romantic, intelligent and elegant, presenting only the events. The film is about beauty and shows the beauty of first love.
This is a true romantic and tragic story because romanticism is tragic in their nature. The first love, the impossible love, the importance of family and good support... That's it.
God, Bro ! The damn Egg ! Let the egg Go aleady !!?
sufjan!!
Luca is a very educated director but the editing in this movie was so sloppy it was really the only thing letting down the movie. I’m surprized nobody has said what is truly resonate in this movie is Chalamet’s performance. Sufjan was excellent too but Luca, don’t forget your greatest asset.
I thought the same!!!!! Very fact editing I guess!!!!! He was moving to Suspiria and was in a rush, I guess:)))))) Anyway, I love the movie so much!!!!!!!!
Am I the only one who found this interview awkward
yes
😂
This host obviously didn’t do his homework.
