    A light rebuild of the notoriously problematic power steering pump on the MEL motors. This is similar to the 1961 1962 1963 1965 1966 1967 Lincolns and I think maybe similar years of Thunderbirds.

    One thing to add here, the center rotor shaft when getting it to go through the seals use ATF to lubricate and we use a tapered piece of painter's tape to rotate the front cover onto that shaft as any minute tear in the seal lip can cause it to leak. It's an old trick I learned from Chris Dunn about 25 years ago. Otherwise great video!

    Hi Nathan have you tried the powersteering pump delete with a volvo electric pump or a pulley system?

    • @dgoldman2846
      @dgoldman2846 Před rokem

      on the '69 460s we have converted to a 1970- timing cover and pulley driven pump system. the older ones we have not successfully found any substitution for this.

    I had the power steering pump replaced and drove great for about 3 days and now the power steering fluid seems to be flowing into the engine would that be the rear seal .. because I dont see any leaks anywhere

      The timing cover seal popped out. Remove the pump, install new seal. Use a little rtv to help hold it into place.

      If you want to fix the actual problem stop listening to dumbass, crooked-dick mechanically moronic "experts" like this Jiffy Lube University dropout, find some actual technical specs for the parts and ideally a "blueprint" so you know what the seal OD (outside diameter) and housing seal bore ID (inside diameter) are SUPPOSED to be, measure or have them measured PRECISELY AND ACCURATELY BY SOMEBODY WITH REAL PRECISION MEASURING TOOLS AND KNOW-HOW and make sure the "rebuilder" didn't "rebuild" a POS (piece of shit) junk "core" and/or use POS "rebuild parts" and/or idiotic, impossible and potentially FRAUDULENT "rebuild" PROCESSES or sell you a "DuPont Overhauled" POS "rebuilt" pump that wasn't "rebuilt" at all but simply "resealed".
      You're going to find one or more of the above even if the real "cause" is a "rebuilt" pump that is no longer properly "vented" and is building up sufficient pressure in the "pump" to "blow" the seal out of the housing.
      That takes you back to "process" and you should clearly seek real, honest and local "professional help" with "your" supposedly "rebuilt" pump problem(s) as someone CLEARLY not mechanically inclined, experienced and knowledgeable enough to ASK THE "REBUILDER" WHAT THE HELL "COULD BE" THE PROBLEM AND WHAT HE/SHE/THEY ARE GOING TO DO TO "FIX" THEIR FAILED "REBUILD".
      Unless you ARE asking the "rebuilder" HIMSELF with your "comment" in which case you should DEFINITELY seek professional help but of the LEGAL VARIETY.
      Anybody who tells you to "RTV" a seal to help "hold" it in place to "fix" a component just "rebuilt" is a "crooked mechanic" either by accident or intention and when he has "monetized" CZcams "INFOMERCIALS" FOR HIS "RESTORATION BUSINESS" IT DOESN'T MATTER IF HE'S ACCIDENTALLY A CROOK, FRAUD AND THIEF OR IF HE'S A REAL "BAD GUY". YOU'RE STILL GOING TO GET "TAKEN" IF HE CAN POSSIBLY MANAGE IT AND YOU TRY TO "WORK WITH" HIM INSTEAD OF "INVESTING" IN A LITTLE "LEGAL REPRESENTATION" ASSISTED BY A REAL "RESTORATION EXPERT".

    Nathan with all the issues that can arise with these unique pumps, is there a way to add a belt driven pump like used on most other vehicles? I realize there are some who like originality, but durability is more desirable.

    • @NathanWilsonDrivingDreams
      @NathanWilsonDrivingDreams  Před 4 lety

      It has been done. The tricky part is finding a timing cover from an old tbird so you can eliminate the pump.

    • @zrabbithunter
      @zrabbithunter Před 4 lety

      What year of the tbird engine is compatible and does it have to be a MEL engine?

  • @snail310

    Hello Nathan, great video I was just wondering with the issues the come up the old crank driven pumps. Is it possible to replace it with a modern universal belt driven pump. Thank you

    • @NathanWilsonDrivingDreams
      @NathanWilsonDrivingDreams  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes it can be done. You have to find a timing cover from an old tbird and they're getting tough to find. I heard someone was working on a kit for this that runs about $2k.

      No. It's pretty straight forward. Two hoses and a few bolts. Just get in there and get started. You'll get it.

    Is this a rebuild or a reseal? Not meaning to be jerk. Simply asking because I know they're two different things. Rebuilt pumps go for $450 last I checked so it's nice to know one could DIY it instead.

    • @Misterbigblock
      @Misterbigblock Před 6 lety +1

      Inside was looking good, so he just cleaned everything and resealed it. Technically it's not a rebuild i guess
