    The Joker is an iconic Batman villain and has been for years, though the origins and true identity of The Clown Prince of Crime are unclear. The Dark Knight has had his hands full with The Joker in a number of incarnations, from his beginnings in Detective Comics, to the film The Dark Knight, with Heath Ledger as The Joker, and Batman: The Animated Series, where Mark Hamill’s voice talent breathed life into the character. The Red Hood, the vat of chemicals, the tough childhood, and the difficult family life: all of these have been used in different ways to tell the story of how the Joker came to be.

    As with most comic book characters, there are often re-imaginings and different versions to a character’s past. An earlier video looked in detail at the origin provided in 1988’s The Killing Joke. but today, we’re expanding and updating our original origin video to include additional storylines and versions of the character.

      FoxRNG It still works for me and IMHO is the essential Joker story.

    • @cha5
      @cha5 Před 4 lety +5

      FoxRNG Well remember Batman musing to Alfred
      “I don’t know him, Alfred.
      All these years and I don’t know who He is anymore than He knows who I am.
      How can two people Hate so much without knowing each other?”
      For me that pretty much answers that question,
      But of course there is that flashback from the Joker’s memory that gives us Batman encountering that nameless comedian who becomes the Joker in that Red Hood costume, but there are quite a few hints there that this is just one of Joker’s many flashbacks of his origin,
      “Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another...
      If I’m going to have a past, I prefer it to be Multiple Choice!”
      The fact that this flashback is in sepia coloring and Batman’s outfit is rather different than how it looks in the main story and especially the fact that Batman doesn’t pursue him when he’s looking down at him struggling in the river and surfaces across the bank of the river are just indications that this is just a fever dream interpretation of Joker’s origin from the recesses of his twisted mind.
      So it’s not something I really have any problem with.
      I’ve always thought Joker’s permanent skin bleaching and greenish hair and permanent grin was something that was done to him in childhood and it completely shattered his sanity, similar to the character in ‘The Man who Laughs’ which was an inspiration for The Joker for his creators Bill Finger & Jerry Robinson.

      People being able to relate to the Joker is what makes the new Joker movie so good, any villain can be evil just for the sake of being evil. The descent into madness for Arthur was extremely well done imo, and that's what made movie so good. Joker wouldn't have been as good if he just fell into chemicals and boom, he became the Joker. Also, it's a movie, normal people won't fucking want to go kill people cause they saw a movie with a villain who wasn't "I'm evil cause I am!"

    The reason why it's better for the Joker to not have a conclusive backstory is because it makes him just like any member of the masses, symbolically portraying the evil and insanity that lives within us all that merely waits for something to come along to push us over the edge so that it can take control. Not only is he an undoubtably legendary villian due to the level of evil he is willing to go to, but a philosophical ideology in and of himself.

But I also like what he says later on where the Joker says, "Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another, but if I'm going to have to pick, I prefer it to be multiple choice!"

    Random movie production fact: The scene in The Dark Knight in which The Joker is struggling to blow up the hospital with his hand held detonator, was a well played, improv by the irreplaceable Heath Ledger. The pyrotechnics team got the timing wrong, and didn't blow the building up as Ledger was trying to hit the switch. Rather than do another take, Ledger simply made it appear that his device malfunctioned. His surprised reaction to the explosion was real, as he thought it wasn't going to happen.

  • @ianleex6874
    @ianleex6874 Před 8 lety +26

    People love to hate Leto's joker because he isn't like the "classic" joker despite the many different interpretations of the character that the character was inspired from. Given the right material, he could very easily be considered one of the best, even rivaling ledgers.

    • @Rythmbot
      @Rythmbot Před 8 lety +17

      No people don't like Leto's joker because he has no direction. He doesn't have a single line in the movie that means anything and he plays the character as if the director told him to just 'act crazy'. That isn't what people like about the Joker's character. Ledger's Joker wasn't just 'crazy', there was motive behind his actions. He was someone who messed with people to the point where they show their true colors. His goal was to break down the facade of civility and exploit people's darkest qualities to create chaos. Thus the line, "when the chips are down, these 'civilized' people - they'll eat each other." Leto's Joker displays no depth at all. It's mainly the writer's fault. He just doesn't say anything or do anything that is thought provoking or meaningful or, most importantly, believable.

    • @ianleex6874
      @ianleex6874 Před 8 lety +4

      +Rythmbot except this joker wasn't simply crazy and there were motives to his actions. He was only there to service Harley, which essentially was his motivation throughout the movie which was handled extremely well if you ask me. That scene above the pit for her origin was intense and eerie and said a lot about both characters in that one scene and at least in the context of their relationship. This was never intended to be a joker movie. Why would we expect the depth of psychology of his character be treated as such?

    • @ianleex6874
      @ianleex6874 Před 8 lety +1

      +Rythmbot different people don't like Leto's joker for different reasons. Some don't like him for reasons I stated and some don't like him for reasons you stated. Different people like different things for different reasons. That's why I said some or half or a lot. I'm not implying all don't like the character for the same reasons

    • @ianleex6874
      @ianleex6874 Před 8 lety

      +Conor Climo I agree. There are also recent comics that also explore the character being a mob boss, and crime boss like Azzarello's joker.

    • @Rythmbot
      @Rythmbot Před 8 lety

      Ian Jackson So what exactly did that scene with the chemicals say about the Joker? He almost lets her die but then he has a second thought and goes back to save her. Why? That isn't explained at all. You may say, "because he loved her" but what is it about her that he loves? He wants to walk away but something makes him go back. So why did he want her to fall in the pit in the first place and what changed his mind? It's true, there could be a lot of reasons for this but the point is that the movie doesn't give us any answers. It's just random. You can't invent explanations for plot holes in movies that aren't actually there. There is nothing in the movie that sheds any light on that. And to answer your question of 'why you should expect depth from the Joker's character'? Don't you think the filmmakers should respect their audience enough to actually put effort into making their characters believable? It's one thing to not bother giving depth and motive and risk to an extra or something. But for god sakes the reason they put the Joker in this movie was because he is the most iconic comic book villain of all time. You shouldn't spend time defending a movie made by people who don't respect you enough to show you something decent.

  • @deathstrokeclanrules8562

    The "Brave and The Bold Vol 3 31" one gives me Charles Lee Ray aka Chucky vibes. Both grew up in abusive households, both were emotionally anti social+sociopathic, both became criminals/murderers, and one eventful day/night caused them to become a living embodiment of something normally made to bring joy and happiness, now corrupt and twistedly evil.
    One origin I prefer is in the 2004 cartoon, where he was an office worker (possibly at Ace Chemicals) who grew up without any attention from his parents or anyone else for that matter, and just wanted to be seen and make people laugh. After one bad day at the office, it ends with him falling into one of the chemical vats and becoming the crazy attention-obsessed entertainer who will make people see him and make them laugh, whether they want to or not.
    Simple, yes, but really the point of the Joker isn't to wonder who he once could have been or how he came to be, what matters is who he is now and society has to deal with him, at least until someone is brassy enough to finally put him down.
