  • A quick glimpse of what BarnBuiltBeaters is all about!
To start, my 1978 Ford F250 I bought around 5 years ago. I immediately fell in love with this truck and have always had some major plans for it. I started out overhauling the original 400ci engine but since have sold it and decided to go another route, diesel power, switched from an automatic to a manual, and built a brand new box. My original ideas started out relatively simple but have since expanded.
Then, the shop/barn where all the work will be done. I purchased my house early 2021 and immediately started tearing into the shop once the weather warmed up. This is essentially the first time I have done any house work so I have many successes and failures as well.
Follow along with the channel to keep up with progress on renovating the shop to be a dream work space and, once finished, slowly building what I consider a dream truck.

Thanks Dude! Although the shop is enjoyable to work on, I can't wait to get back into the truck!

I'm glad to see another SENSABLE guy working on and restoring dent side Fords! Just PLEASE don't try to get silly in your presentation. There is just too many jokers out there that do more joking and laughing and playing than doing work on trucks. I like to see the actual trucks and instructional work. I'm looking forward to new videos!

I can be a goofy guy so expect some humor from time to time. But, the main focus will be on the truck once the shop is complete. Dont worry, this is a channel about my truck not about making you laugh!
Let me know what youd like to see for instructional videos or if you'd like to see something up close/better.
      Thanks for watching!

Saw your post on FTE, following along to see this beaut come together! Fellow dent owner here but am a total novice so probably gonna learn far more than I can help but happy to add my .02 if it can be helpful! Good luck!

Thanks for following along, I seriously appreciate it!
You have to tell me a bit about your dentside!
I also started as a novice with this truck and learned a ton just by digging into it. I had almost zero experience prior to this truck. Best thing I learned, dont let doubt tell you you cant.
If you have an instagram follow me on there too. If you ever need help, mesaage me and ill try my best to help you out!

@@barnbuiltbeaters my truck is a great second vehicle that I have done a bunch of shade tree work on. Ultimately I want it to be reliable, safe, and comfortable enough to drive the family and a few canoes to take on camping trips.
At the moment nothing beyond the basic mechanicals work 100 percent. It's working great for me as a hobby and a house/yard tool. Pulling stumps, picking up loads from the stone yard, and hauling renovation junk to the dump. It's a f250 supercab custom with an 300i6 and manual trans. The suspension, steering and brakes, are the only systems I've put a lot of time on. Did the rear disc brake conversion and replaced all the old rubber on steering and suspension components. The rest is just bolt-ons like a HEI dizzy and gauges I've installed here and there.
At the moment I'm specing out a fuel system renovation to accommodate a sniper EFI.
It's so much fun but time and money really get in the way! I am grateful that it runs good enough to do house work which is enough to just barely justify the cost and effort to my wife lol.
      FTE is an awesome resource.

@@garbv1773 a 300ci is a fantastic motor. Initially I was never a fan of them since they aren't V8s but the more I read about them the more I want one!
An EFI system should really help with the reliability of the truck too. However, I did always like tinkering with my holley carb though!
If you want more power I have read that trucks from this era really benefit with the help of a mild cam. A relatively cheap and easy swap for you. Im sure there are a million videos out there for your engine to guide you too.
Post a video of it id be sure to watch!

@@barnbuiltbeaters I feel yah on the V8 front. V8=more and more=better lol. I was shocked, not knowing at the time how prevalent they were, to see an I6 when I first popped the hood the first time. But I've come to love and am thankful there is so much space under the hood and that it's so simple. I just tested oil pressure and its reading a steady 25psi. Love to see it 40+years old and still so healthy.
I want the cam to be the cherry on top for all the performance stuff. However, engines themselves are a true enigma to me. Beyond the basic theory I still don't even get how they work lol. The engine and electrical are big mental blocks for me that I know I'll eventually get over by getting in there and doing stuff. Than i'm sure I'll kick myself for ever being a scaredy cat lol.
Yeah tinkering carbs is great but I HATE these single barrels. I have a rebuilt one in the cab just incase.
What trans are you gonna use?

Don't be nervous trying engine work. These engines are very simple but I get the hesitance, as I can be the same way with projects/work too if I am not 100% confident. I have never been completely stuck, it may just take longer than what it probably should have! Since this truck doesn't seem to be your daily it can afford to sit for a bit while you figure things out if you get stuck.
As far as the electrical, I feel the exact same way as you. it is hard to "see" what is happening. Once again, the electrical is simple in these trucks so also a good way to learn. A multimeter is a must have if you are working on electrical. I will have to buy or build (probably will build) my entire wiring harness from scratch, not sure how it will go haha.
Well since you came here from FTE, I am sure you saw my post about 12V Cummins swapping it. The truck started out as an automatic (C6 trans) and I converted it to a manual/part time 4x4 (NP435/NP205). I really enjoy driving manual vehicles and think a hot rod street vehicle should be manual so I plan on using a manual trans. I have more research to do but I think I am going to use a G56 (6 spd).
      1. Aluminum so it is lighter
      2. Came in 2018 Ram trucks and am using a 2018 Ram 2500 Frame so it should bolt in, other transmissions to my knowledge had been phased out.
      3. Aftermarket support. Although I think the NP4500/5600 have more support there is still decent aftermarket for the G56.
I am not going to be pulling, towing, or racing the truck I don't think I need the reliability of an auto as they can be built to handle much more power.

I also found your channel through FTE, and I gotta say… I’d love to have a shop like that one day! I like how you took an older building and totally re-did it. It looks like a very practical size for a hobby shop. I’m making do now with my ‘shop’ (8’x18’ straight truck body), though it would be real nice to eventually get something I can actually pull a vehicle into.

      @barnbuiltbeaters  Před 2 lety

Thanks the shop is a great size for my first shop but I do wish it was bigger! When dont you wish it was bigger though!?!?
I used to work out in driveways or in friends garages back when the truck actually drove. It is super nice to have a legit place to work! Unfortunately the shop still needs finishing!

Is that a 4" lift? What size tires? I'm doing a 78 F250 and would like that same stance.

    • @barnbuiltbeaters
      @barnbuiltbeaters  Před 2 lety

This is just stock height! Tires are 33" with 16" wheels. I think it is the perfect combo. I am sure you would love it! I think I am going to have to switch to 17s for my future plans but want to maintain the same tire to wheel ratio. Follow along and you will see why I may have to ditch these!
Mickey Thompson All Terrain Baja ATZ LT285/75R16 is what my truck is running. These have the pattern of a mud terrain but ride and drive like an all terrain (Because they are!) Pretty quiet and seems to be holding up well, although I have not put too many miles on them (back when the truck actually drove ha!)
