- Mukbang inside Maximum Security Prison | Singapore | Short Documentary
How hard is life in prison? We explore the prison regime through the eyes of officers and inmates in Changi’s Maximum-security prison. How does an inmate live in a single-man cell?
In this first episode, we enter a world behind bars to meet the inmates. We follow Graceson, a gangster who manages to get himself a new tattoo in prison and is duly caned for it; Khai, a professional skateboarder who is just coming to terms with the loss of his career; Rusdi who is counting down to his release in 50 days using packets of snacks; And Boon Keng gets into trouble for keeping origami in his cell during a cell search.

For context, Singapore imposes the death penalty for drug posession above a certain quantity. His 3-year sentence seems harsh by the standard of other countries, but it’s a mere slap on the wrist compared to hanging.
Don’t do drugs in Singapore.
True, one if not the most strict country in the world for consuming drugs (drugs could be many things, even cigarettes or beers could be drugs too but it's a too long discussion)
Don't eat chewing gum in Singapore , it's a offence and you will be arrested 😮 extremely draconian country

2:07 "these trolleys will ensure the food is kept warn until it reaches the inmates"
2:50 "its very cold sometimes the meat is hard already"
right, i found that weird/sad too
I am 100% sure the food itself's alr cold and harden before they put it in the trolley
That's why singapore is sometimes called a developing developed country
I think he said, "mee" as in, the noodle. Still really sad.
I mean. That IS noodles , they cool quite fast,
Remember this Is a maximum prison. Prisons that are maximum are just like this, and the inmates interviewed most likely non violent.
Yes and no, non violent towards the camera man doesn’t mean they re non violent toward others
I'm pretty at that point I'm just happy to be able to interact with people. Look at their joyful faces at the breakfast, they can finally see something else other than that room
Well the last one interviewed was simply a drug abuser who happened to trespass the istana. Considering a tough law on drugs and his action was potentially a terrorist-level threat, he’s probably the chillest inmate right there
Singapore's hardest prisons are normal prisons i India
@@SIDEWAYS1.0 Sidewalks in india are toilets in singapore though.
That one guy seemed pretty chill and nonviolent to end up in solitary. I wonder if it's actually like a favour to him to not have more violent cellmates than a punishment?
Its not solitary. Its one-man cell
You don’t have to be violent to end up in the shu
It's not solitary. Every inmate is given a cell since COVID.
Otherwise it's usually 4 people per cell. And it's much worse.
at 2:50 he actually says "the mee (noodles) is hard already" he did mention that they were not given meat during lunchtime and was also eating noodles at the time, hence the comment
Mie not mee.
@@RIZFERDhe is mee and I am Yu
Pretty wild to see people in these comments talk about "they have it so good" when you are literally seeing a kid doing 3 years in a tiny little box for getting high
What do you think the kid might have done to land in that box?
Read about the history of Singapore and you'll understand why it's the most peaceful and law abiding place on earth.
Yeah, Singapore is no joke. Their Country is clean and they have very strict laws and rules.
Rules are rules, don't break it. I love going there
Laws are there for a reason bud
Honestly that food don't look bad. But living in that cell with no bed or even a chair, thats torture.
That's what I thought!! I'd go nuts in one day!
His whole cell looked really run down. Plus, he was literally standing on the rim of his toilet, while taking a shower. That part made me think on how pathetic his living condition was.
Good.
This kind of life for 3 years for a temporary high from drugs ! Wonder if he thinks whether the drugs were worth it ?
This is the way to stop the addiction problem in the west. Not babying them like how they do now
"if I have to give a point from 0-10 I will say maybe 0" wow 😂😂😂 and I was looking at it and thought doesn't look that bad
Compared to real singaporean street food though…
Try it. Prison and jail food is horrible. It literally says on most of the packaging "not for human consumption" at least here in America
Rice, fried noodle, stir fried vegie, fishball, sometime fish or chicken meat...the only thing food lack is seasoning!!!!
@@CarlPapa1990 American prisons are horrible, You cannot compare american prison food with prison food from countries like, Singapore, Netherlands, Sweden etc. America has one of the worst prisons ever, Not as in low security but more as in the inmates are handled like animals which is maybe why the people that get released always returns to the prison because they dont get rehabilitated to behave in a normal society. America needs rehab programs and to put restrictions on guns too.
Not having a bed or chair is already bad enough, but not even getting books must be the worst of all, nowhere for the mind to used and to mental escape... That cell might even be worse than US solitary, and that's saying something.
9:24 Amazing how a quirky background song can make a prisoner's plight seem fluffy.
Dang i could watch hours of this kinda documentary, sucks its such little time
they took this from cna insider. they have a series and the first episode is called How Tough is it Singapore Prison Life? this video can be found inside of that episode.
@@rebos6432Thank you
There was a long running series, based on prisons mostly all over the U.S. I think it was called lockdown.
There’s also another series called Jail(I believe), which is based on local jails.
Those will keep ya busy for a long time, and the theme songs will never leave ya brain 😝😉
Frrrr same
Everyone here needs to open a history book and learn about how Singapore was, and how it got to how it is now. The entire world needs to learn from it.
Learning what ? A lack of respect for freedoms and human rights ? A Draconian public order act ? And laws against freedom of speech ??
What about the slums?
I learn it from jojo your welcome...
From China? No thanks

garbage comment, try Mexico's prison system
This is horrendous. They don't even get a proper bed and a mattress. They get 2 blankets, and that's it. Forced to sleep on the cold, hard floor. 40 months in prison, stuck in a tiny isolation cell for getting high is INSANE!
Also those food portions are tiny. I would need about twice that.
That's why you don't do crime in the first place, that's the consequences of their actions, also its a Maximum security prison so it might be different to other ones
So the answer is simple, don't break the laws in Singapore and you'll be fine.....
Youd manage with the food.
Or not.
Considering Singapore has spme of the strictest laws on drug possession, including death, he got off easy. Possesing chewing gum can land you in jail as well
Singapore is really warm... I'm guessing they don't have AC in there. Hopefully there's electric fan
The food is better than food served to students in some schools in my country
Oh well...
The grass looks greener on the other side
Atleast, those students got some freedom to see the Sunlight daily. 🥲
@@RahulRk-tr7otthe students aren't criminals bro...accept wt is right..
The food they give high school kids and the food they give prisoners is about the same. Why? Because high school is just prison for kids :^)
Wow they've sleeping on the ground concrete floor, the prisoners takes hard times to a whole new level...
Remember in many cultures folks sleep on the floor their entire life. Im in Fiji and that's usually the case
Really minimalist lifestyle
Compared to America, Singapore has much harsher sentences for drugs, but their prisons are far less violent, they have better food and it just seems like a more humane place. And remember that one place was max security, so I would think the lower security levels would be more open.
Usually the worst part of prison is the other prisoners, followed by the very concept of social removal
Damn 3 years for being high, so Singapore is no joke especially comepared to here in the Netherlands where softdrugs is legal in quantities for personal use
They are so happy omg 😅
7:22 I know how this feels to a degree, in Edmonton they keep you in a cell that big for 24 hours before you can appeal to the justice of peace. Been in there a few times and it makes you loopy AF
2:27 rip that guys apple on the ground
Clean and tidy. Food Pack properly. Nice clean cell. Definately very comfort jail compare to other country like columbia, peru, philipines, vietnam.
They have chairs elsewhere
Nah those smiles at the begining man
Jail food videos really do bring out my appetite
They should allow inmates to do mukbang for your entertainment.
Looks very well thought out.
This is 100000000000 times way better then the Philippine toughest prison
I think it's very nice to have your meal adjusted to your dietary needs, get fruits and they have variations too. Idk about the flavor but their meal looks like the low sodium, low carb, msg-free, healthy catering service that I used to order (maybe they taste the same lol)
Low carb? Its all rice and noodles.
@@MrGeorgewf Well, clearly his meal isn't the low-carb one.
After watching the Toughest Prisons In The World series, the Singaporean max prison is like 5-star hotel compared to them.
These prisons are really nice, especially compared to American especially South African prisons, but the crimes are very petty. I don’t feel like they’re trying to make a point that it’s that bad just that they’re trying to make a point that the crime isn’t worth it.
and now research the ridiculous reasons people are sent to jail in singapore...
@@leonrowe5445 well give us some examples? Instead of giving Singapore a bad name without any clear reasons? Most of them who are sent to prison are those who committed crimes such as molestation, thief, fraud, causing physical harm to others. So what are the ridiculous reasons?

They’re eating better food than most schools in America
3 years for drug consumption is crazy, people who do drugs have a problem putting them behind bars doesnt help them it just removes the problem for a certain amount of time. Most drug users still use it after getting released, they need a reformation program to solve the problem permanently
I would think it would be a solution. 3 years of this situation. After that amount of time that has passed, they are clean. I bet they think "Yeah I'm not doing another 3 years of that to get high for one night."
I'm not saying 3 years of that is right, just saying I bet they don't have a lot of repeat offenders.
Not that I've really done any research but I would think after their sentence they have to go through some sort of rehab program
Singapore is such a tiny country but with a crazily rich government and a well payed highly efficient management system, and has zero tolerance toward drugs. If you can still mange to get yourself some drug under such circumstances, you are very sussy. Your crime probably also includes Illegal smuggling of contraband at least.
Some people get less. I knew a guy who only got one year for an oz of weed, some speed and acid. Make no mistake, every drug is in Singapore, they are just sneaky about it, and its expensive. 😅
I came here after Prison cell of Madagascar... It feels good better now.

Worst part of prison must be the prison part…
Having your own cell is a luxury usually not seen in most prisons.

I can almost guarantee there will be consequences for him insulting the food too the press. They are similiar here. Ive never been to "prison" but i did spend several months in a county jail in the southern usa which is considered way worse than prison. I was eventually found "not guilty". Ill never get that time back. I can say, based on the conditions i saw/was put through, what you see on film is the tip of the iceberg. That baton on the guards side looked.... used .. worn even. Just just keep that in mind
Everyday they standby 2 full trolley of food or about 300 plates which will be thrown away. These standby trolley is for emergency incase of spillage etc
Mat Selamat: not so tough

Damn, that's tough. Im wondering avout statistics, what people usually do after being sentenced for few years in such prisons. My life would be completely broken, im not even sure how i would manage to sleep like that or live without a chair or sofa for some time. I was in military camp for one month bedore graduated, it was the longest 30 days in my life. Despite the fact we were allowed to do sport outside and had a library with lot of books and games like Chess, time still goes so slowly
