Come on, kids, show more enthusiasm! I would have been squealing with delight. Sherry, I don’t see how you made everything work, given the mish-mash of items. Wow! What an impressively lovely room.
Thank you, Donna! I wish I could have had a big reveal, but the kids are living there already, so they saw the room’s progress throughout the week. But, I agree-they could have shown a tad more enthusiasm! 😜
I know, and Madison’s favorite thing was the curtains; what about all the beautiful thing she trifled and got from her storage , ? and the son he liked the book shelves 😢 They don’t appreciate her talent she is awesome decorator 😍🤩
Yes, I agree…it was very disheartening to see such a blasé response from her children. Maybe the mom was a little heavy handed with what “she” liked and wanted in “their” home.🤷♀️ Overall, it was a BEAUTIFUL transformation.❤
Turned out just beautiful!
I have to admit I thought really ,The curtains ? ! What about the room full of beautiful furniture and decor items . And the fact that you have a lady that is a design expert !
I think it's a lovely room. It's not matchy-matchy and it feels like a warm retreat rather than a showroom. Perfect.
I can tell this was a labor of a mom’s love and caring. A lovely room.
Your boys and their significant others are SO lucky to have you. They are living in style due to you!🤎🧡🖤
Ditto 😊
Oh, thank you! That is so sweet of you to say!
@CanterburyCottage Just the truth ma'am.😊
This style brings in a feel of cozy. So many interesting pieces and areas to keep the eye moving. Lucky couple to have you Sherry and your creative talent.😊
You did a fantastic job, (I knew you would) and I love how appreciative they both were. It is very hard decorating someone else's space, but you seem to have nailed it.
Oh wow! It looks so good. A comfy, classic, collected, clever, creative, cozy, vibe. I wouldn't change a thing! That's how to turn a house into a home. It will never go out of style.
Thanks so much! 😊 I just love that traditional style is “in style” right now. It just feels so homey and so familiar.
It's beautiful and comfy❤
Meh not my style but I think just having a mom and her sons girlfriend working together and helping and just being nice is the greatest thing in the world. The world needs more nice people
@hemahaw1
I agree. Mom and Madison created some good memories and hopefully bonded. I hope Madison isn't one of the "entitled" feeling kids that truly don't have the slightest concept about living at or below their means, because they've never had to "make do" or "go without" as previous generations have had to endure. Some may have gone through the "Great Recession" but not the "Great Depression" both of which were extremely tough to go through. It developed a wonderful sense of gratitude and a resilience with extremely creative solutions on how to "get by" and a good part of the time, learn to be thankful for "a roof over your head, a bed under your butt (even if it was a mattress full of straw on the floor piled with old blankets for a pallet), food in your stomach (even if it was the same food EVERY meal) you at least weren't going hungry, a pot to pass in, and a window to throw it out." Which in those times, especially the "Great Depression" was considered being well off.
It's kinda scary to wonder what would happen if the kids that didn't experience either Era would do if that or worse were to happen again, with their feeling of entitlement fully ingrained. Even though my kids grew up lower middle class, meaning sometimes it was paycheck to paycheck with needs met but no room for wants, even they didn't have it hard like I did having only one working, uneducated parent, a disabled, stay-at-home mom, whom both had lived through the Great Depression and had no way to better our lives. But as kids we didn't realize we were living a good deal below the poverty line because we had both parents raising us, food, a house, bed, clothing and shoes so we had no idea that we were poor. Once we got older, like high school and especially college age we learned then that it wasn't like that for other families and desired to do more for ourselves and our children and Grands. But no matter the income level growing up as long as your parents weren't wealthy, all kids figured out there were people that had it better than they did and worse than they did and there was gratitude taught at any economic level cause either parents or grandparents or both had survived the Great Depression.
Oh, Sherry!!!! I adore the room!!! I could not imagine having such a "finished" looking room at their age. Heck, I am almost 69 years old, and I still don't have such a room as this! Oh, how blessed they are to have you in the family!!!
Oh, Sharon, what a lovely compliment! Thank you so much! 😊
Looks like a magazine!!
I like the mirrors a lot!
Well done! I wish I had a mother in law who just has a basement full of wonderful furniture I can use 😉
I love the notion of an “ updated grandma style!” My style too. Antiques, arts, books, cabinets for collectibles, and the ever challenging problem of placing the TV so it doesn’t overpower the room are the things I put in my living room. Thanks for the video. I’m inspired.
Me too - I think that encapsulates my own style lol
Wow Sherry! You hit the mark! It looks so comfy and homey. Looks like they’ve lived there for years, and curated their finds over time. Yet you were able to raid your basement, utilize what they had and hit the the thrift stores to pull it all together. How wonderful for them!!! Win win! ❤ Oh and I think my favorite is the houndstooth chairs. It’s no wonder why you saved them all this time! And that painting was a gorgeous steal and addition! Comfort at its finest!
Oh, thank you, Bren! I was actually really glad to move some things out from my basement. I hope to get the storage room a bit more organized, so I can show it in an upcoming video!
@@CanterburyCottagesounds fun and interesting! I’m all in!
Impressive to see a large, cold room become a warm and cozy space. It gave me inspiration and hope for my living room.
Oh, I am so glad, Mary Ellen! I’m sure you can create a cozy space if you put your mind to it!
IF this IS the "Grandma" Look then "Grandma's" Got Cash, Class and Style. Everything in the space looks New and Interesting. How Wonderful it must be to have YOU as a Mom and Designer. WOW 👍
What an amazing gift! Nothing looks “thrifted”, it all appears to belong. I’m sure Spencer and Madison realize how lucky they are to have you.
Oh, thank you!
Everything looks professionally decorated! Amazing that nothing was new or expensive!. Be proud. Kids give your parents a brunch as thanks and show off to the other 3!📞👩🆗🙈☺
That's a far cry from the way our living room looked when my husband and I first started out! 🤣You've created such a beautiful space!
Thank you so much!! Yes, it looks better than our first living room, too!😜
My parents (in 1950) said they ate on an ironing board for awhile after getting married :)
You created a wonderful room that looks like its been collected over time. I'm sure they can't wait to come home to this cozy space. You worked your magic again.
The room turned out beautifully! So professional and curated. It only needs one thing, a rug in the middle to ground the space. I hope Madison and your son appreciates the fabulous and professional work you did for them. They are indeed fortunate!❤
I agree, a dark rug in the middle of the room would lend itself extremely well to the original inspo photos that Madison had, particularly since painting the walls is likely taboo.
I totally agree.
This is beautiful and so surprising that young folks would be drawn to this style. I'm an old gal and I would be very comfortable in those surroundings. Great job.
I watched this episode twice! Sherry, it truly showcases your amazing ability to stage a room. Unbelievable and so inspiring! Madison is one lucky lady!
Wow, thank you! She is really happy with how it turned out. Now, she wants me to decorate the kitchen! 😜
I had to watch it twice too!❤
@@CanterburyCottagewell that will be fun!
Oh boy can’t wait doe that episode!! Hugs
@@CanterburyCottage Kitchen? Go for it! I'm sure you'll create a spectacular space.
I have a "finish house" but you can come in anytime and decorate for me. It keeps evolving and I am always changing my style. I love your combination of new, thrift, and unexpected.
I love that our homes keep evolving. Isn’t it funny to look back on the things we used to like?!🪿
I just came to see how many adoption requests are in the comments. This is adorable. I'm sure Spencer & Madison will really enjoy "the cozy" in the pending winter. Thanks for sharing this with us. Love, Love the use of the quilt!
Sherri for the win! It feels wonderful to do something for your children. We never stop being their Mom!
Thank you, Melanie! Yep, love helping out my kids!
All of their friends will be so envious! The room is beautiful and completely inviting. Great job!
Thank you so much, Ellen!😊
Stunning transformation! Did anyone doubt Sherry’s process? Love it.
Oh, thank you, Lanet! 😊
So warm, cozy, and inviting. Beautiful transformation!
They are *so* lucky to have a Mum who (a) has a BASEMENT full of things to furnish their home; and (b) has the time and interest to help them get settled in their new home! I absolutely love your ideas, your DIY projects, and the fact you can find such great stuff at the thrift stores!! While the style isn’t my taste, I have been inspired to re-do our living room using many of your ideas and tips…so thank you!! Great job, Mum!!😁
Yes.
How many people have that?.
Not many, I would imagine! She’s a decorator, so she likely has TONS of things she hasn’t used in previous projects.
I keep saying you should have a storefront and classes to teach how to bring a room to life. Your generosity is overwhelming and your taste exquisite. This room, as all your rooms, have HEART ❤️. They are so fortunate to have you. You crated a warm and charming environment on a dime!! My favorite decor is the wall hanging compositions. I never get tired of watching your talents!
I love the way you made the candle holders look by taking off the glass, and I love the way the room turned out…..beautiful!!
Thanks so much! 😊 When I told Madison that we would just hammer off the globes, she was surprised!
Great job Sherry and Madison! Considering you have a maximalist style Sherry, you did well keeping it more open for the kids (which is likely more preferable) They are lucky to have a talented mom and "mil" to help them out😊 OH! And another reason to never throw anything out!
Thank you so much! Madison likes vintage things and likes to thrift shop, so we’ll see if she becomes a maximalist over time! 😉
I keep saying it: Sherry is the best darn diy-er, decorator, thrift flipper, up cycler, etc. I’ve ever seen. 💯🏆🥇
My home is mostly thrifted, and my wardrobe is mostly thrifted ...it's the only way to go! You both did such a wonderful job, must have been so much fun. Can't wait to see how you decorate it for Christmas! 😉
Thank you so much!! I need to spend more time shopping for clothing. I just hate taking the time to try things on, so I sometimes buy clothing that doesn’t fit! 😜
What a beautiful transformation! I love the mirrors and the six dollar oil painting is worth so much more! It’s literally a high art genre of landscape painting. So beautiful! And tasteful! I love the special details like the red cushion table and the green one. Also the little seasonal items like the pumpkin! Wonderful! You made that space into such a wonderful home. They are blessed to have you!
Thanks so much! 😊 I love that painting. I need to do some research because I wonder if there is some way to repair that small tear.
@@CanterburyCottageif it's a stretched canvas, you may can repair it from the backside with some gesso.
I think there's also a way to use a small canvas patch on the back, which could be a more long-term fix than just gesso.
You have such a flair with decor. Maddison and your son are so blessed to have you in their family. Those units are an anchor for the room. I loved the video. X
Sherry, I can't even believe how beautiful this turned out with spending such little money!
What a blessing you are to your children. You've used your skills in both of their homes now and they do not look like first time homes. Well done!
Hello Sherry! WOW, you have such a talent for interior design! I've seen all of your room make over videos. They turn out the same, Stunning. Thanks for sharing your time, talent and inspiration with us. Your boys and their partners are very fortunate to have you assist in making their spaces beautiful. Can't wait for next video. Take care and God bless 😊
Thank you so much, Terri! You are so sweet! Madison would like me to decorate the kitchen next!
@@CanterburyCottage Yes! Can't wait😘
You did good Mom!!!❤ You just showed them a great lesson in being frugal.
Thank you so much!
Spencer and Madison seem precious, and I love seeing her right there beside you, enjoying the transformation. ❤
Wow...instantly they look like Mature, Accomplished and Sophisticated Adults! 🎉 I Absolutely ❤ the Club Chairs!
Sherry, you gave them such a gift with your remarkable talents! I can just picture the Christmas tree in front of the window on the bookcase wall. I hope they keep up the tradition of thrifting and remaking furniture and decor as they explore their style.
Thank you, Gina! Madison does like to shop at thrift stores which is so nice. I have a new shopping buddy!
What a blessing you are to your children and their partners! I hope that young lady appreciates you like we do!! It turned out fabulous. I think the mirror grouping is stunning and the curtains look so high end. Those bookcases add such warmth to the room and her favorite green looks great on that tv stand, door pulls add such personality.❤️ Pretty much the whole room is great!
I agree...my mother in law only told me I couldn't cook and wore too much make up...😂😂😂
@@SD-nh5yr I had four kids and homeschooled and at the time of a visit from my mom in law I had a breastfeeding baby and they showed up early and I didn’t get my sweeping finished because of baby and when she saw my broom still out she said, ‘you’re not the house keeper you used to be’! She broke my heart to bits that day!😭
@@thechickincharge1073that's so sad. She should have offered to help you finish sweeping.
Those are two lucky kids to have a mom like you to put their living room together. It's beautiful! It's a warm, welcoming, comfortable room now.
Oh, thank you! (Hopefully, Spencer reads this!😜)
Aren't they fortunate to have you Sherry! Fabulous transformation.
Oh, thank you, Mikki! 😊
Spencer and Madison are fortunate to have your expertise Sherry! What a gorgeous room, so inviting!! I love the book cases, hounds tooth chairs, and how you used the quilt in so many ways! Thanks for sharing 🙂❤️
Thank you so much, Madonna! They are happy with how it turned out. Madison would like me to help her with the kitchen next!
@@CanterburyCottage that's exciting, hopefully you can take us through the process!! You're fortunate to have such wonderful "daughters".
You really hit one out of the park on this room! Love it!
Thanks so much 😊
I think this makeover is stunning-it's a home-so inviting and beautiful. The term "Grandma Chic" or grandma whatever it is, doesn't seem right. This room is an example of Traditional with a modern flare. It's very classic and tasteful and the only thing I would add is an ottoman for the two houndstooth chairs to share so you can put your feet up and relax! Great job-and this young couple is SO lucky to have an interior decorator to help them. (you win Mother-in-Law of the year!)
Ok.This room is PERFECT! So stylish, so cozy, and so full of visual interest. You are literally the mother / moths in law we all hope and wish for!
I love the look of that room. It is so pleasant and relaxing to look at.
Oh, thank you, Shelly! 😊
What a transformation and I LOVE the houndstooth chairs! The whole room turned out just beautiful and I’m sure they both are so very grateful for your wonderful design eye! ❤
Thanks so much, Janie! They do seem happy and have already invited friends over for dinner to show it off! 😊
I love eclectic rooms that have the common theme of cozy, warm, inviting and homey. This room is beautiful. It's wonderful how you didn't take over but included Madison every step of the way. Great work ladies!
Updated grandma = granny chic!!! Love the two examples you showed! Whose Mama has two gorgeous houndstooth chairs and an incredible round glass and iron table sitting in their basement???? These alone made the room.... everything else was icing on the cake! Note to self.... when choosing a husband, make sure his Mama has a full basement!!!!!
Room is gorgeous...complete transformation !!! I hope they realize how lucky they are to have you Sherry(fabulous decorator & your stash)! I love the mirror wall and the chairs you contributed. Great job as always ! 😺
Thank you so much, Hope! They are really happy with the makeover and are ready for me to decorate their kitchen next! 😜
Really beautiful, looks like a fall color palette 😊
It looks very homey. So comfortable and cozy. Who wouldn't love to sit there and chat, watch the football game, or even quietly read a book. It's gorgeous Sherry!!
I love how the room looks like everything has been collected over the years and has a cozy feel. It's hard to achieve that in a large room. You did a wonderful job. I know they have to be thrilled!
Oh, thank you, Cheryl! They are very happy (despite the lack of emotion in Spencer’s voice😜)!
Well Sherry, you hit the ball out of the park once again! You are a gal like me. I check out the wall art first thing wherever I go thrifting! The pieces you chose were stunning! The living room is definitely magazine worthy! You are a “master” decorator in my book! One would never know that this was mostly thrift store bargains. Superb job!!
Hi Sherry,
I love this living room. It looks like it was curated over time. The room is so cozy !
The mirror gallery is cool and the bookcases were just perfect for their spot ❤
Thank you so much, Mary!😊
This does not look like a young couple's first home. It looks very comfy, and more like something that was created over time. Beautiful!
What an inspiring video, Sherry! It's amazing how talented and resourceful you are. It's a beautiful room! How terrific that you used your son's girlfriend's preferred colors in the room. 🧡 💚 🧡 You are no doubt the kindest mom.
Totally agree with you on gallery walls! What a lovely room
Thanks, Karen! 😊
Love this video
Dang I was looking forward to seeing Spencer too. We wish them lots of fun, happiness & love in their new place ❤
Thank you, Nancy! He is growing a mustache, and it looks bad, so he didn’t want to be on camera! 🥸
You truly have a tremendous styling ability!!
You're always up to a smashing room transformation! Spencer and Madison are so fortunate to have your assistance in completing this cozy transformation. Well done, you!
Thanks so much, Brenda!!
Beautiful! They are so lucky to have you. I love their home, especially the gallery wall. 😍
Thank you so much, Vicki!
Your sons place looks so gorgeous! You did a magnificent job with making over this room. I’ve helped my 3 daughters with their homes but a lot of things were newly purchased. I love repainting old furniture & picture frames to make them fit the decor. Amazing!
Thank you so much! I was lucky to have several previously thrifted items in my basement. I’m sure your daughter’s appreciated your help!
I was surprised at the kids subdued comments. I thought you did an awesome job on that room Sherry ! You made it warm and inviting and 99% more lovely than most beginner couples have even after several years. You are a super mom!🌸
That's because it's decorated for middle-aged people, not a young couple.
@@stitcher4729 I disagree with you. It’s a warm ,comfortable , inviting room that anyone would be proud to invite friends and family into.
I tried to be guided by Madison’s tastes, and I think she has “mature” tastes. Have you seen the makeovers I did in Amiah’s house? czcams.com/video/m3mSa2SOdyY/video.htmlsi=FOkjzy8oS6s-Bbtm I also tried to be guided by her tastes, and I think she has a more youthful aesthetic. I think you will probably like it more.
I wish I could have had a surprise reveal, but they were already living in the house and saw the room evolve over the week. And, I think they are both rather low-key personalities.
How fortunate for them that they had such an expert with so many extra items to give them to use and help so much to bring that room to such a wonderful finish! I love that Madison has such great tastes too and seems to like DIY herself. Sherry you did a great job and I am sure they are so appreciative, as I know when I started out it would have been a dream come true to have someone like you to work on my space. Such a pretty space!
Thank you! Madison is not afraid of doing a little work and she loves to go thrift shopping, too. I’m so happy to have a new shopping partner!
What a beautiful room! Fantastic job! I love the hounds tooth chairs.
Thank you so much!
You did a great job on their new living room! It looks so cozy!
I know your not Madison's mother-in-law(yet), but your are the dream mom-in-law. You aren't just nice for your son's sake, but you seem to welcome the young ladies in with an abundance of kindness & love. Sharing your stash of decor & furniture probably blessed Madison so very much. What a great example of an older lady coming alongside a younger lady.
Draping over the chair backs and even the lower front are my favorite easy the ngs to change for seasons. It is such a lovely shade for the sofa and chairs. Wonderful way to teach your children how to do things in a pinch. Your total expense was less than $500!😊❤
Again, I cannot believe how creative and talented you are. You absolutely amaze me! Seriously, I cannot believe how great you are!❤❤❤
Sherry, i have said it before and I will say it again. You are truly amazing and your taste in home decoration is impeccable. I only wish I owned a house that you could decorate! Love your videos! You never disappoint.
Your children are so lucky to have such a talented and generous mom! Awesome job!!
Thank you so much! Hopefully, they see your comments, Kristina! 😜
WoW! The room looks so cozy and beautiful!
Thank you!! 😊
This is absolutely gorgeous, Sherry. I hope your son and Madison appreciate all you have done for them. It just shows that you don't need a lot of money to have a classy finish🌷
Definitely one of your talents! I love how you can pull these makeovers together from a stash! Great details and finishing touches. Love that painting! Just a little curtain hack… let that hem out and you’ll get about 3” more in length if you want to hang curtains a little bit higher!
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!
Dang, that was satisfying!!! What a gift you have for making empty spaces into cozy, charming abodes!!!
Enjoyed how you put such a beautful room together on a budget. All your thrift store finds and use of colour really brought the room together for a lovely living space. Bravo!❤
Thanks so much, Carol! 😊
I'm so glad your son moved out of his brother's basement so we got to see you do this again! I love the room. I have to try to create a couple of rooms in my home over the next few months with an almost zero budget so I was just thrilled to see you put this together so beautifully. Now I'm super inspired. Thank you! 🙂
Those houndstooth armchairs are sweet!!
Wow how beautiful it turned out… I have to say I was skeptical at first bc of the colors being used… but WOW everything flows and coordinates beautifully.
Thank you for sharing Ms. Sherry
Thank you so much! Yes, the color of the sofa and swivel chair were a challenge for the colors that Madison wanted in the room.
I was just wondering, have you ever made slipcovers? I was thinking I might try making slipcovers from dropcloths. If I could find white or light colored dropcloths, I might be able to dye them. My furniture is blue, which I love for Spring and Summer but I'd like green for Fall and red for Christmas & Valentine's day. I'd love any advice, Sherri. Thanks.
@@georgiannaneller1394 I have made slipcovers, but I’m certainly no expert at it. It’s been awhile, but I remember it involves a lot of pinning! I believe that Miss Mustard Seed has a video series on making slipcovers that are very thorough and well done.

Thank you very much for sharing that information. I'm grateful. I'm going to try it, too. I love everything you do. You're so talented. It's, truly, a gift.
This room is so cozy! My favorites were the herringbone chairs. And I’m so envious of your thrift store finds!
Thank you so much! I do feel lucky to have several good thrift stores near me!
This room looks very collected over time. It’s so pretty!
When my husband and I started out we had donations from family and finds from local auctions and some we brought from England. A lot of the finds came from the estate of Pearl Hutton, she is still in our lives 40 years later as my daughter wanted them for her place. They may be over 70 years old but look good with the new bookcases from IKEA. We never achieved the wonderful ambiance that you created. ❤
Great job - it just proves that you don't have to have brand new everything in your home when you're starting out.
Yes! Thank you!
I love the gallery wall! This really looks like a grown-up room.
How sweet of you to help them with their home furnishings! The hardest part of filling in a room is the style and design. I cracked up when you said Spencer’s only priority was the tv. Hmmm…he sounds suspiciously like my husband. 😂😂😂
Sherry what a beautiful job. Your son really gave it a thumbs up, I laughed when Madison said her favorite was the curtains. Thank you for the journey, it was a great learning tool.
If I was asked what I liked I would say EVERYTHING!!!! Your daughter is very blessed to have you. You are amazing. I recently found your channel and I’m grateful that I did. ❤❤
Wow, thank you! You are very kind, Debbie! I am so glad you liked this video. After Christmas, I am going to make over some other rooms in their new little house. I can’t wait.
As usual you never disappoint Sherry! You have done wonderful projects for your boys and their significant others!!
What a beautifully curated room. I had sooooo much fun watching you turn this room into a stylish comfortable place for your son and his lady.
What a strikingly beautiful room. Those kids are so lucky to have you helping them to get started. You made so much out of a very little investment, quite impressive!
Outstanding job, Sherry! Madison and your son are very fortunate to have you in their lives to help them put their first home together, especially now a days when money is tight. So smart to reuse and recycle. Looks comfy and cozy. My favorites are the bookcases and the mirrors above the sofa. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much, Karen! They are both happy with how it looks. They already had friends over for dinner, and Madison said that Spencer sat out drink coasters on all of the tables! 😜
Wow as always awesome make over everything comes together amazingly all the little touches make for a comfortable room. Thank you for sharing your talent with us have a wonderful blessed week.
Thanks so much! 😊 The weather in Illinois has just been beautiful, so I hope to spend some time outdoors this week!
Sherry this room is absolutely stunning. What an awesome job you’ve done. I’m sure your Don and his partner are over the moon having this room to come home to each day. All my life I’ve wanted a room like this and I can never manage to get anything like this no matter how I decorate it. They are so lucky to have you and your expertise at decorating. You’re a great mum and mil. My mother in law ( Ivey had 2 ) would rather have criticised me rather than ever offer any help. You’re amazing.
You nailed it mom, she blessed to have you
Wow! Great job all the way around. The room feels so warm, cozy, welcoming, comfortable, and lovely. They must be over the moon.
What a comfy and charming space! It looks like it had taken quite a while to curate this room, instead of a fairly quick project. Awesome job! ❤
Absolutely gorgeous! You prove over and over you don't have to spend a lot of money to have a beautiful home. Keep the inspiration coming!
Thanks so much, Terry! Honestly, I wouldn’t know how to decorate if I had a lot of money to spend! 😜
