I put this information together to inform people of the true meaning behind the Gadsden flag. Given current events in media and the lefts agenda to equate the flag as a symbol of terrorism and racism I thought now would be a relevant time to make and post a video explaining its history as an American Flag.

I think the reason why the government hates the Gadsden flag is because it does not stand for the government, it stands for the defence of our individual rights. That is truly why I love this flag.

    • @classiclistener0150
      @classiclistener0150 Před 7 lety +118

@Hunter Angstadt - True...but, the Gadsden flag stands for 'old' government (Benjamin Franklin and the Founding Fathers) when people had to fight tooth-and-nail (people had to 'earn' what they acquired - fight for it - in a time when elected officials were trusted friends of those who put them in office). It also stands for 'unity' as in the original colonies coming together and staying together (United we stand...); Touch me, I'll touch you back ('new' government HATES those who fight back - they prefer Sheep); it stands for "No Taxation Without Representation" (American citizens nowadays have become so used to rising taxes that we think it's a way of life!?!?); it also represents an opposition to 'false arrest' ('new' government justifies this by calling it 'resisting arrest'); it's also tied in with "The Right to Bear Arms;" "The Right to Free Speech;" and, worst of all for 'new' government..."The Right of Revolution;" etc. Everything our 'new' government wishes to rid and ban US citizens of...and, to NEVER teach in schools!?!? WHY? Somewhat sounds like Communism/Nazism to me!?!?
Government hates when they see citizens uniting; thinking for themselves; defending themselves, their families, and, their proprty; objecting to their silly bans and regulations; and, especially, to The Constitution reading that 'We The People' have the right to, and, can and should, overthrow a corrupt elected government ("The Right of Revolution"). To repress these Constitutional Rights, and, not teach them in public schools, is, in itself, an opposition to the ideals of the US Constitution; an act of totalitarian and/or communist rule...and, un-American...anti-American The "Don't Tread On Me" flag opposes all of this!
Government 'now' has very-little if anything in common with the government that fought, freed, and, gave America its independence. For the most part, our resent leaders have been hedonistic, self-serving parasites who steal from US coffers; lie to and repress their people; and, virtually...get away with it through some sort of plea bargain or pardon!?!? Why? The "Don't Tread On Me" flag opposes this, too!
"NEW" Government also HATES the "Don't Tread On Me" flag because it's morally, ethically, and, logically, against them. The only time government wants its people tough and aggressive is when they can use that energy against an enemy 'they' dislike - in the form of war; embargoes; etc. Other than that, government wants to 'control' sheep! They're sheepherders with benefits - bail-outs; pardons; plea bargains; huge financial payoffs; golden umbrellas; etc.
This flag is against them, all of them...and, this flag hates them!

Liam Dye very true, religion wasn’t harped on when I was in the military; some people had religion, some did not just like in the civilian world. Much more importance was placed on doing the right thing because you have integrity as a person, compassion for human life, and loyalty to your country and fellow countrymen. Being a good person because you truly are a good person is looked at more favorably than being a good person because of a deity or fear of punishment from the deity. Patriotism is not at all synonymous with faith. Atheists will defend you with arms when prayer doesn’t come through.

@Emilie Bouchard socialism only serves to makes its citizens weaker over time and more dependent on the government. The more and more daddy government encroaches on your life, being responsible for everything from healthcare to housing, the more they control you.
Self sufficient people are more confident, and have a greater sense of charity for their neighbors because there isn’t this sense of “the government will take care of it” attitude.
Remember, what is given can be taken away, especially if you start to question or oppose those in power, we’re seeing that in Canada currently. Step out of line and your bank account and assets will be seized. Don’t get the vaccine? Well we’ll deny you a heart transplant.

In 2002 I visited Yokosuka, Japan. I was there for my pre-retirement processing from the U.S. Navy, and it was far from my first visit. The USS Independence was in port during my stay, and it flew the 13-stripe Gadsden flag on the bow, where most ships flew the Union while in port. I learned that the oldest active ship in the Navy flew this flag in this manner. What a travesty that the FBI now associates variants of the Gadsden flag with terrorism.

Thanks for posting - great info. Here’s what some one sent me about the Gadsden flag:
Considered by many to be the true symbol of freedom and independence, the Gadsden flag was created by Christopher Gadsden, in 1775. The field was yellow and featured a rattlesnake that was coiled to strike. Below the rattlesnake, the words “Don’t tread on me” were printed.
The flag was first flown on a warship in 1775 as a battle cry for American independence from British rule. The snake was an established symbol for America at the time, even Benjamin Franklin used it, saying the rattlesnake never backed down when provoked, which captured “the temper and conduct of America.”
The tread in Gadsden’s defiant phrase, don’t tread on me, means “to step, walk, or trample so as to press, crush, or injure something.” And so, with its tongue flicked, fangs out, and body coiled in defense, the rattlesnake (and motto) warns:
“If you dare put your foot down on me, I will strike.”
    Thanks again - GB

I honestly don't understand how anyone can misinterpret the message of this flag. It's pretty explicit. I mean, it's spelled out right there. "Don't tread on me."
Recently, I saw an image someone had made depicting an altered version of the Gadsden flag. On it, a bare foot was squashing the snake, with the words "Let's Tread On Them."
Clearly, the creator of that image has no idea what happens to bare-footed people who go about stepping on rattlesnakes. THEY GET BITTEN.

Thanks for posting. You had me at Ben Franklin. I have a first edition of his autobiography. I read it when I was 12. It was given as a gift to an ancestor who was a vet of the revolution and passed down the family. He is my favorite founding father. His quote that you recited was a moving and beautiful explanation and for me nothing else was needed though the history lesson was also interesting. I was unaware that anyone thought or could think this was anything other than a symbol of our revolution and unity as a nation. I have the one my great great grandmother made for the centennial and I have also purchased a red and white stripped variation. I am also a stamp collector and this and variations of it have appeared on US stamps during the 1960's and again for the bicentennial. My collection of flags is not complete of course but I have over 20 historic flags or flag fragments and about 50 reproductions. I love patriotic flag history and am always learning new things about flags. My favorite is the flag fragment I have from the US flag one of my ancestors got at the end of the War of 1812. It consists of one hand sewn star on a torn square of blue. He got it off a battle flag for the unit he was in. He was a lieutenant.
I suppose I have been remiss in keeping up with current culture and news. So I have not always noticed when the media has made errors. Anyone who thinks this is anything other than what the founders intended is an ignorant *********. I sometimes get my nose too stuck in history books or on a research project to be paying much attention to what has gone on around me.
I have noticed though that our educational system is turning to shit. When I was in school we were required to take history or social studies every year from 3rd grade onward. I took my first history course in the 4th grade. I had good teachers. I also had good things to bring in for show and tell but that's another story. In high school we were required to take four years of American History, one year of world history and two years of civics. We had to pass all of the above to graduate. Recently I learned that the local high school only lets students take history if they are honor students. They have no civics courses and don't teach world history and no history is taught at all prior to high school. So to recap, students have to earn a spot on the ONE class that teaches American History and, get this, they only teach an extremely liberal view of history. Washington is ONLY mentioned as a notorious slave owner and NOT as a war hero or even president. Students are only taught a very skewed view of history. One paragraph is devoted to the time prior to the revolution. One paragraph is devoted to the revolution. One hundred pages are devoted to slavery. Two chapters are devoted to the civil war. One chapter is devoted to reconstruction. One chapter is devoted to the combined topic of WWI, the depression and WWII. The last half of the course is devoted to the civil rights movement. Nothing is devoted to the Korean War, the space program or the Vietnam war. The course ends in 1970. Only about a dozen presidents are mentioned. This is what today's children learn. I know that many high schools have no history at all. This high school has one class taught by the English teacher whose other 5 classes are all on how to pass standardized tests.
I blame the government. They meddle in school systems that were not broken. My school was not broken. My small high school graduated 125 in my class. 42 went on to Ivy League schools. Most of the rest graduated from college or a post secondary school. Because of government meddling my high school has had to drop 90% of offered courses and now mostly teaches students how to pass standardized tests. What this means is we are raising a generation of drones who are ignorant of history and civics, are unaware of their constitutional rights, are uninformed in how the political process works. It is obvious that our government has deliberately done this to create an obedient generation of idiots who, like lemmings, would follow any elected official off a cliff.
This is also how we have so many people who will swallow anything the media tells them. They were not raised to understand the concept of critical thinking. They can't tell when the media is lying to them. Today, on CNN they stated that the flag of the state of Florida was filled with confederate symbolism and needed to be redesigned. They didn't actually show which confederate symbols they were talking about. They didn't point to any one part of the flag. They just said it was filled with Confederate symbolism. I live in Florida. One branch of my family was enjoying it's third generation of being Settlers here on the day the "Pilgrims" landed on Plymouth rock. I am intimately familiar with Florida history. I am intimately familiar with the symbolism of the state flag of Florida. There is not one trace of Confederate symbolism on any part of our state flag. They are not just exaggerating here. They just outright fabricated, lied, to the whole world about our flag. They invented controversy just to sell advertising on their channel. I wrote them a long scathing and highly educational email on the topic and I am certain they will not even bother reading it. Our flag is a white field with the cross of Burgundy emblazoned with the great seal of Florida on it. The white field symbolizes peace. The cross of Burgundy symbolizes our Spanish heritage. The seal pays homage to our indigenous peoples, our maritime history and our agricultural history with nothing about either the Confederacy or slavery included. In other words, the flag we have has been completely sanitized of all Confederate symbolism. So to understand why they might do this to our flag I did some research. It seams that the governor who signed into law adding the cross of Burgundy to our flag was a segregationist. So it seems that a small group of people feel that since a segregationist sighed into law the new changes, those changes must be confederate in nature. This is like saying that since Adolph Hitler signed into law the bill that made it possible for Volkswagen to be founded, all people who own a Volkswagen are NAZI's and Volkswagen should be banned in our country.
    Again, no critical thinking.
I fly the cross of Burgundy next to the American flag in my front yard. I do it to honor my Spanish ancestors who founded St. Augustine 450 years ago this September. They had nothing to do with the Confederacy. They flew the cross of Burgundy 295 years before the first shot of the civil war was fired. There were many many flag designs used by the various Confederate units and local Confederate governments. If one were to ban all flags that incorporate any element that bears a vague resemblance to any flag used thus then we have to ban all flags containing stars, stripes, the colors red, white, blue or any saltire. That would require redesigning virtually all state flags and our national flag. Such would be ludicrous and the fact that this is not universally obvious is sickening.

Something I find interesting is that the Metallica song "Don't Tread On Me" better represents the symbolism of the flag than most governments or news outlets.
"Once you provoke her, rattling of her tail
Never begins it, never but once engaged
Never surrenders, showing her fangs of rage"
This is in reference to Franklin's quote about the rattlesnake, which starts no battles unless provoked but fights like hell when it does fight. A good analogy for America, indeed
" Love it or leave it, she with the deadly bite
Quick as the blue tongue, forked as a lightning strike
Shining with brightness, always on Surveillance
Eyes that never close, emblem of vigilance"
This is a reference to the rattlesnakes anatomy, which is important to mention because the choice of the rattlesnake is significant in the first place, as it's only found in the US's corner of the world. Also apparently Benjamin Franklin called the rattlesnake an "emblem of vigilance".

Christopher Gadsen saw the yellow painted drums with a rattlesnake and the words "Don't Tread On Me" sketched on them in the Spring of 1775. They were being carried by a regiment of Continental Marines from Philadelphia. Gadsen was so taken with the imagery that he converted the design into a flag in the Fall of that year. He first gave it to Commodore Esek Hopkins to serve as the standard for his flagship. Gadsen later presented one to the Congress of SC.

However I lived up to those values and learned to value our freedom as Americans. I had a guest speaker today during ethic class and made a statement about the flag. I do believe we are one of the greatest country however to get there has its cost.
