- Today I'm bringing here another video and this time it's a little battle of two incredible voices from the music world: Whitney Houston (the one who was recognized worldwide as THE VOICE) and Mariah Carey (the singer who was recognized for her incredible vocal range of 5.4 octaves!). I'm not saying that one is better than the other, I just want to show the differences in their voices that is what makes them unique. Whitney power, power, and straightforward power. MARIAH incorporates so many elements in her singing and what comes out is a harmony of different colors and textures, only applying power when musically necessary. If they were mutants, Whitney is like Magneto, and Mariah is like Storm.
Not just power, she also is a master of dynamics. She can produce the loudest most powerful sound but then in the same instance make the quietest most soft sound that can barely be heard. Compare the intro and outro of IWALY vs the climax for reference

Whitney wasnât just power, only a fool would say that. Whitneyâs tone was overall powerful, she couldnât help that. Whitney had the runs, the riffs, the projection, the musicianship, the head voice, the beautiful creative changes of her songs, and the gospel roots to give her all of that emotion. To mimic the singing of Mariah Carey, you might have to put in some more effort than you would have to put on mimicking any other mainstream singer. I also prefer the sound of Whitney's voice, but I prefer most of Mariah's songs. Her music has a lot more personality (in my opinion) than Whitney's songs do. I think Mariah is an underappreciated songwriter whose phenomenal voice has overshadowed her writing talent. Whitney was an extraordinary vocalist and vocal performer.
@@DavidMichaelCommer I've always loved Whitney's voice more than her actual material. A journalist in 1985 told her ON CAMERA that her voice was too amazing to be wasted on pop cliches. The contract she signed with Clive Davis sealed her misfortune (in terms of being relegated to the pop market) It earned her heaps of money and records but not much respect in terms of sheer artistry.
I seriously wish Whitney had experimented with different genres of music (Much like Aretha had) bcuz her voice in it's prime years was simply too majestic and dynamic for pop music alone. Just imagine a young Whitney signing a hard rock song ! It might have caused an earthquake.

I don't know anything about her private talents or musical interests, but she really had "the greatest voice of all," or at least some of the greatest vocal performances of all time. Mariah Carey's voice is a phenomenon, but I just happen to subjectively prefer the tone of Whitney's voice (if we have to compare) but very much appreciate that Mariah is a very talented and interesting songwriter, and when that is packed together with someone with such a vocal instrument, that's a true phenomenon.
I do wish Whitney had had better material, but I don't want to take anything away from what she gave. I grew up with her music and it's part of the soundtrack of my life. I will always love it. :)

it is kinda unfair to Mariah to eliminate the lowest part of her range (c#3 to f#2) and the highest part of her range (c#6 to g#7), because it kinda eliminates some of her most impressive notes⊠that being said I think Whitney had the more âsoulfulâ and dark tone, and the most power in the mid-belts. Also her head voice was unmatched. Her stage presence was also incredible. These are the areas where Whitney had an advantage over Mariah.
Mariah on the other hand can go lower than her, she has this sort of duality in her voice between her âsolidâ vocals and her breathy vocals (which is kind of her trademark), she had the more open/free upper belts, the most developed falsetto, the whistle register and overall the more melodic/impressive riffs and runs (although Whitneyâs were also amazing). Both of them are incredible in their own right and they both brought their unique contribution to music. Celine should be included in this video as well.

I prefer singers with more weight in their voices because it's how I sing. If I were to choose between them, I would choose Whitney, because she is the voice that inspired me to sing. You must've been huffing on paint fumes in the twighlight zone when you wrote that. At no point in Mariahs career has she ever been as consistent, powerful, creative (live on stage) as Whitney. Having a higher octave range means a hill of nothing in the grand scheme. Ariana Grande has a bigger range than Whitney, does that make Ariana better than Whitney? Don't even answer that rhetorical question. Whitney excelled in so many other areas where Mariah would fail miserably (or fake it with her famed lip syncing presentations)
Try as best as you can to absorb this-- possessing a bigger octave range doesn't make you superior, it simply means you have a bigger range...nothing more. What matters is how you utilize what you have.
What so many of you Lambs fail to understand is aside from natural ability/talent, the most important aspect of singing is the ability to reach through the listeners heart by delivering a song with feeling, depth and emotion (something Whitney truly excelled in) not how high/low you can sing, or how many acrobatic transitions you can do. This is MUSIC, not the Olympics. As far as I know, The Olympics have yet to unveil a category for big octave range vocalists.
Keep in mind Whitney grew up singing Gospel while Mariah grew up LISTENING TO soul/R&B Records, then used her "5 octave" bag of tricks to lend her best impressions of it when she landed herself a record deal. Never compare a gospel rooted singer to an imitator with a bigger octave range.

Mariah starts to shine from C#5 (belts and mixed). Except for the head voice cause I think Whitney is unmatched with her headvoice as well as Mariah is with her Whistle.

Whitney wins the battle for superior live musicianship, power, breath control, full rich tone throughout her range, agility in head voice and being the best mid-belter in the business. Mariah at her peak is a Queen. Whitney at her peak is a Goddess!
I love both, different strength and style, both have their own charm, but you can find many singers with thick sounded belting like Whitney's though not the exact tonally like her, but not one have Mariah's range, tone, textures and depth that her voice possess. Truly one of a kind.
