Eat DC - 5 Things You Have to Eat in Washington, DC

- The nation's capital is full of amazing restaurants and tons of international food for travelers to enjoy. Here we give you our five favorite foods to enjoy when we visit Washington, DC.
1. Ethiopian Food: DC has an enormous range of great international restaurants, but one that stands out as quite unique is the abundance of Ethiopian restaurants in The District. If you get a chance check one out and make sure you wash your hands before you eat, because you don't use a fork and knife, you use your hands and your bread to enjoy the stews, meats and veggies on offer.
2. Maryland Crab: whether it is amazing Maryland Crab Cakes or just plain old tasty crab in anything DC has a lot of crab options for you. So if you see some one selling some crab cakes on the street or on the menu you will get a fresh and local tasty treat.
3. Oysters: the oysters from Chesapeake Bay are worth their weight in tastiness. And what is great oysters are a popular happy hour treat at a number of restuarants around town. So enjoy some oysters and a local beer.
4. Half-Smoked Sausage: whether you are wandering around the national mall looking at museums or you head up to Ben's Chili Bowl there are plenty of options of eating this local sausage.
5. Other Local Treats: Chicken wings with Mumbo sauce is popular when you can find it. The Mumbo sauce is a combination of sweet and sour sauce and BBQ sauce in my opinion. You can always grab a cupcake in Georgetown (they are famous there), or you can head out to Mount Vernon and grab some peanut soup and some bread pudding.

Ethiopian food is highly recommended for any visitor to DC! Dukem is good and easy to get to from Metro but there are tons of great Ethiopian places. Ask a local when you come because we often have our own personal favorites.
thanks Rob!
Anonymous Automaton your ordered kitfo then there are 3 kinds of it
1= raw meat with different spices
2= the meat has touched fire like 50% cooked
3= 100% cooked
Or you might have ordered raw meat
Can confirm as a local!
@Anonymous Automaton yep...out to😅😄
Silver Spring has a lot of great Ethiopian spots that cost a bit less than downtown and are close to the metro.
This man is valid! He knows everything abt all these places all over the world. This video was spot on once again.
I live in the DC Metro area and your advice is SPOT on! Great advice for visitors...
I agree pretty good for a non Washingtonian
Granted I didn't do the Smithsonian much when I lived in the DC 'burbs but whenever I went to the mall or the Smithsonian museums, I would grab lunch at one of the cafeterias. Most are your simple burgers, dogs, etc. but the one that is amazing is the American Indian Museum's cafeteria. They took the various indigenous regions (Pac NW, Great plains, SW, North Atlantic, S Atlantic; if I remember correctly) and curated dishes from the region to put on the menu. So smoked salmon from Pac NW, Buffalo from the great plains, etc. They also had the simple burgers/dogs/etc if you weren't a brave eater...
Thanks for reminding me of my favorite museum cafeteria now that I live about 500 miles away from them. :(
As a washingtonian, this was surprisingly spot on! ❤️
Hip city veg in dc is literally the best thing ever...
I love how you mention mumbo sauce. You only find that in real dc, hood dc. A lot of suburban people in the area don't even know what that is.
As an arlingtonian yah idk
💯💯💯💯
I have no idea how this man knows what he knows about places all over the world
Mumbo sauce is everywhere in PG County…..
Wonderful video! 💗 Greetings from London! 🇬🇧
thank you :)
This just makes me miss home D.C. Bmore corridor. Missed a few spots but still makes me homesick.
He said oysters and my mouth instantaneously started to water🤤
Sadly due to Covid a lot of places have closed. But as a resident of the metro area, I can say with confidence there’s so much to the dc food scene you’ll never get bored.
Miss my days at Georgetown and living Arlington and walking to Mst everyday
I live in DC and the absolute best raw bar in the city is at Old Ebbitt Grill. They have half price raw bar after 11:30 pm too. They're jumbo lump crabcakes are amazing as well.
Hitting the bars for Happy Hour food specials is a great tips.
If you like a European style indoor/outdoor beer garden there are a several to check out incl. Wunder Garten, Biergarten Haus, and Dacha Beer Garden.
Awesome tips! Thanks!
We loved Megrolls in Alexandria, VA when we visited DC last year. Delicious!
Great video! Dukem is good, but my favorite by far is Chercher in the Shaw neighborhood.
i will put it on my list for our next visit
Wolters World. Have you checked out Addis Ababa or Red Sea in Adams Morgan? I believe there is also still one of the two just north of DC on the Metro Red Line in Silver Spring
@@leyenda6149 yep on Georgia Ave and Thayer ave in Silver Spring.
Local here. Arlington, VA (Courthouse metro stop) has some fantastic restaurants as well.
lifebrarian . I've never eaten over there. What restaurants do you recommend?
OMG yes! The peanut soup and bread pudding are amazing! You can get them I’m Williamsburg too.
My favorite Ethiopian spot in DC is Chercher.
DC's one of our favorite places to visit. Thanks for the tips.
I just arrived and I'm here for 24 hours what's some things I should do today it's raining and windy so I have no idea I'm here with my sister and my father were all over 21 what are some fun things to do besides museums and Parks that sounds boring I don't know I want to do fun stuff
Yeah, the food trucks here are very good and they have nice prices also. Our office was until last year located in downtown DC and usually I dropped my co-worker off while he was getting the food and called me when he was done with his route. Meanwhile I was driving around to avoid terrible high parking costs.. These days our office is located in Tysons Corner, but I do miss the food trucks..
Amazing video! This was very helpful!
For Ethiopian try Dukem or Ethiopic. On the National Mall, go to the restaurant at the Museum of the American Indian.
The Peking Duck at Peking Gourmet Inn is worth the trip across the river. Skip the cupcakes. Old Ebbit if near the mall (get a reservation even for lunch). Clydes or Filomena if in Georgetown. Le Diplomate if you want french. Ser in Arlington. Landini Brothers in Alexandria. Two Amys if you want pizza. You will not go wrong with any of these.
You were in my neck of the woods. I live right across the street. Oh don't forget jumbo slice pizza in Adam's Morgan.
At the Smithsonian, there are restaurants at the national museum of American Indians not far from the Air and Space museum and they serve some very very sumptuous food.
I live in a relatively small city, but our food truck culture has been exploding! Sadly we don't have any Ethiopian restaurants, but we do have a few other African cuisine restaurants I have been dying to try.
If you like pizza, get a jumbo slice at Pizza Mart in Adams Morgan, crazy huge slice for ~$5
Cheers!
Wolters World agreed. Of all the jumbo slices in Adams Morgan, Pizza Mart has the most flavor. It's kinda like NY style, but it really is its own thing. Best time to buy is in the evening on a weekend
funghazi plus you have to.go to the monument there are food places but there are also electric scooters
they all fucking suck
@@michaelonlign Hummm dead tastebuds I see...😥
Just thought I'd mention that Frederick MD has many of the same restaurants with less crowds. Be sure to try Brewers Alley, the pizza and hefeweisen are awesome.
Thank you Sarah! So true so many good and cheaper options outside the district
Yeah frederick is lovely with all of its wines and cheeses
Too far ...why skip B more to go to Fredrick?B more has better food and so does the burbs outside of DC..Fredrick has good restaurants I have eaten at a good tapas place and the guys restaurant that was a contender on Top Chef...but its not a must go to place to eat.
@@stevenkelly9731 Frederick is closer to DC than Bmore
Loveee this video 👍🏻 i can't wait to visit DC next month!!
lots of good Peruvian and Salvadorian cuisine in the dc metro area. Also especially in the NOVA suburbs get some Korean food! I wouldn't too excited about the mumbo sauce or half smokes if you've ever lived in the Midwest. Much better there IMO. I agree on the oysters, they get some good local ones fresh. A lot of chain restaurants near the mall/downtown. Venture into neighborhoods a little farther away off those areas. Chinatown used to have more Asian places but the chains are taking over.
Oh, I do miss the half-smoked!!
Here's some tips, 1.ALOT of the "crab" related foods in DC have filler 2.MAKE SURE you stop at Bub and Pops! 3.There are several different types of Mumbo Sauce around the city ranging from the bright orange-ish red to the dark burgundy BUT the BEST ones are ALWAYS at the sketchiest carry outs smfh
Love Bens Chili Bowl and know Ms Ali personally...but don't miss out on a decent half smoke from some street vendors with their carts.
In the city, all I can think of For sure is: Bens Chili Bowl and Mumbo Sauce. In MD, crab cakes 1000%! Everything else is per your own taste buds. Now that I think about, I gave the DMV a HARD TIME, but the city has changed so much, it is pretty awesome!!! Prior to this summer, I hadn’t been in the city in YEARS cause of traffic, and MANNNNNNNNN HAS IT CHANGED!! (Peanut soup ...... nah, go to the hood and get some soul food!) or easily go to Hst and Horace and Dickies fries fish😋😋😋
Ben's Chili Bowl is a little overrated, but definitely love crab cakes and mumbo house! Mumbo House is the king!
I'll wait...lol, love that, Mark!
Take a side trip to Baltimore for the world's best crabcakes!
#5 should be number 1. That’s real dc
You HAVE to have a meal at Metro 29 Diner. Diner is fantastic, and the portions, oh my goodness! Any of the breakfast items are my favorite, but they also make the best reuben sandwich ive ever had
Steamed crabs is a must, fried chicken and mumbo sause from Chinese restaurant is good to, don't forget steamed shrimp
Have you been to weenie beenie in arlington? Home of the original half smoke. Also gt cupcake is good but at the wrong time, lines are around the corner.
A half-smoked or a buffalo burger at the Museum of the American Indian suffices for me!!
Interesting how Five Guys was local about ten years ago before they franchised. I remember trying it in 2007 and finding it amazing, then shortly after they showed up everywhere. That's a good option if you want it from it's original city, if the pizza is as bad as another commenter claims. I will look for the Ethopian place my next trip there, thanks!
wow i genuinely didn’t know 5 guys was from the DMV. Great burgers just crazy expensive
@@papagramps1257 used to not be the case - original was a hole in the wall
This is Wolters World at it's finest. Thanks.
I just ordered my Wolters World t-shirt ! I can't wait to get it ! :-)
Thanks for the suggestions
Our go to place is Old Ebbitt's ....it is a DC institution. Great food and people watching.
Greetings from Dublin in the Rep of Ireland.would you recommend Washington hoping to visit the capital.
I'll come to DC by the end of the year, so thank you for the tips.
Definitely trying to crab cakes when we go.
Great little video, so I would have the hot dogs and the three deserts lol
Thanks for this, visting soon!
I've never been to NY, but in DC there were quite a few delicious bagel places. Best I've had so far.
Whenever I'm visiting DC time to time I'll take the metro to the outskirts whether Alexandria or PG County because the restaurants are a bit pricey and bougie and if you do want something cheaper it's the fast food restaurants. The outskirts of DC tend to have much better food and restaurants and prices are much reasonable.
Marrakech is a great Morrocan restaurant on "P".
I was there last year and, like you said, I was surprised how around little food was available walking around the landmarks on Pennsylvania Avenue.
This is great... going there next summer :))
If you're willing to splurge I go to Jaleo or really any of Chef Andres's restaurants. Expensive but really good. I'm really sad that pasta plus in Laurel is closing ( know its way out of the way) but I don't think you'll find better Italian food in the area, it was also inexpensive.
The Korean barbecue is worth mentioning, too.
Perfect timing! Im heading down there in 15 days!
I’m hungry.
I've been to Ben's Chilli Bowl 2 or 3 times and I think it's overrated. Get a half smoke at a hot dog cart.
I like Ms Ali.....but yeah you right the cart half smokes are better...Spicer and ...just better.
I had one and it was awful So much good food in DC too !!
Check out "Levantes" at DuPont circle in DC. Great Turkish food. Thanks 😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Döner Bistro in Leesburg, Virginia is fantastic. Reminds me of the great Turkish Döner stands back in Germany.
Hot wings with mumbo sauce 😋
Sooooo good
Chicken wings and mumbo sauce doesn't often get mentioned in these videos!
You missed the NUMBER ONE MUST EAT FOOD IN D.C. The bean soup served in the Senate Dinning Room. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senate_bean_soup
That is THE quintessential food of D.C.
1 bens chilly bowl is the only place 2 get a half smoke (I’m from DC btw) and I would flip out if Mumbo sauce wasn’t on here. Thank god
I had a pound of crab legs at The Wharf. Go to Captain White's and enjoy.
i forgot about all this stuff haha
I do miss Ben's! I also laugh at what they call a MD style crab cake in Hilton Head. Don't even bother ordering one anymore.
i keep that in mind ..anyhow it all sounded real good
HEY where are yo going to be today. I'm from DC and I want to meet you. I've been watching your channel for about a year now and always wondered when you're coming to my city. Love your videos, keep it up.
I filmed this a couple weeks ago :( so we are not in DC any more. It was a fun trip though. My feet hate me :) but I loved it.
I disagree on the jumbo slice. DC has terrible pizza. :). Also, the DC area has fabulous Salvadoran and Peruvian food.
just saying if you don't have any other options with no reservations it is at least there for you :) but yeah the other international fair is so good. love peruvian! need to try salvadoran
Wolters World they have fantastic Korean restaurants also
Timber Pizza Co is amazing. One of the best I've had
Thanks for making this video. I am looking for creative ways to grow my DC centric travel channel and I appreciate your remarks.
Ben's is overrated. Been there once in the past decade. Yes to Ethiopian food though!
Convenient timing😄 are you ever planning on visiting the Twin Cities?
We have a 10 shocks of Minnesota video of you want to see some Minnesota fun :)
Wolters World okay I will thanks. It's interesting to see what visitors think of your hometown😂
Wow, you teleported from London to Washington really quickly!
Shhh it's a secret
Wolters World have you ever done a video, or discussed elsewhere how you shoot your videos? You are in an amazing number of different far apart places all while working full time as a professor in Illinois, if I am not mistaken.
i don't think i have a specific video on that. But i could put something together
Wolters World that would be great. Been watching your videos for a while and always wanted to know.
The jumbo slice place featured in this video is probably the worst one in the city lol
I love how you mention mumbo sauce. You only find that in real dc, hood dc
Do u have any videos about traveling through new england
we have a 5 love and hates of visiting New England video and i filmed a don'ts of visiting new england video that will be coming out in August i believe.
Wolters World can’t wait for it
Ethiopic on I think H St? Has the best lamb tibs!
thanks! will check it out on our next visit because we are in love with ethiopian food
No prob! It’s my favorite cuisine in DC as well! Habesha near U st I think is a hole in the wall that does some good food and at affordable prices! Ethiopic is more expensive.
dc yay
Crab cakes are number one. Bar none
A half-smoke is a hot dog the same way a bratwurst is a hot dog
**Is pleased Mumbo sauce is on the list** ......... by the way some of the best mumbo sauce is in the carryouts in the very parts of town that the scaredy cats are telling you to avoid.
Nandos forsure !!!! since most of the US doesnt have one nearby
That's a joke ...right?
DC is a great food city but surprised Mark hasn't had Ethiopian before. My modest medium sized Midwestern city (Indianapolis) has four Ethiopian restaurants. Get the honey wine! It is really good.
Hi there! I’m planning to visit DC on December. Which would be the best restaurants you’ll recommend for a tourist?
Food trucks!
You forgot jumbo slice! Everyone should eat a slice of pizza the size of their arm at least once in their life.
Are there any other places to get a half smoke besides Bens Chili Bowl? Just curious.
Any hot dog cart you see....they are better than Bens.
bens is terrible
If you like korean check out "Hee Been". Really great bulgogi.
You need to be careful when buying a crab cake. Some are filled with breading.
True. There is quite a "variety" of crab levels in crabcakes
Are you gonna do a Top Things to Eat in the Florida Keys?
Best. Video. Ever.
Pony tail 👍🏻
brent vanevery I was born and raised in DC he doesn’t have a clue what he’s talking about
Y'all gotta come to the Dallas/Ft Worth area sometime!☺
OK so I searched for Israel and got this
Who’s from the dmv?
When I went to dc I had lunch at the department of the interior.
WoW ...that's boring.
