    I'll be going there in a few weeks, and the first thing I want to do after I land at Reagan is hope on the Yellow to Ben's for a half-smoke.

    Loved the video and the tips Rob. I am heading out to DC Oct 23-26 and your "Tips, Tricks, and Hacks" have been invaluable. Thanks for that. I was looking at staying at Hotel Harrington on 11st SW (I'm cheap), however, I am now looking at the Holiday Inn or CitizenM on 6th St SW, but I noticed there isn't much food around there. What are your thoughts? Is staying south of the National Mall a good choice? I'll pretty much be on foot or capital bike share.

    GreT video rob. Yummy half smokes. Do you know a great place in DC for a Reuben sandwich. Right now I love the ones that Bethesda bagels has, but I would love to know your favorite if you like them.

    Ben's Chili Bowl was a one and done for me. I can say, been there, done that, and never wasting my money again. The only plus of Ben's was the people that work there. They were so nice and helpful. The food was awful IMHO. Thank you for the information on the Eastern Market! I will definitely go there next trip.

      Ben's is the most famous half smoke and has a lot of history but I don't eat there with any frequency. For a visitor it could be OK for an experience though.

    • @joannlawery4258

      I love going to Ben's Chili Bowl whenever I visit DC. It was on my bucket list. The half smokes were very good especially loaded with Chili. (I'm from New York City so we don't have something like this.) I went the next day for breakfast and had grits with cheese. So good. My last day I had the chili with cheese for dinner. The chili was spicy but oh so good. Ben's Chili Bowl may not be for everyone, but I enjoyed it as well as seeing the historical pictures on the walls outdide.

    While popularized in DC the honor of inventing jumbo slices belongs to Koronet Pizza, a whole-in-the-wall pizzeria near Columbia University in NYC.

      I used to work in DC and lived in the area, Arlington, to be exact. This was back in the late 70s, and being from Jersey, I didn't really eat much pizza while down there because how could I? The NY/Jersey/Philly area always has the best pizza in the country. And when I was in NYC, big slices was always common.

    Nah seafood belongs to eastern VA too and the Chesapeake region as a whole, which I consider DC as an outskirt of.

  • @chinaberg
    @chinaberg Před 2 lety +5

    Unfortunately, many of the great international food is being pushed to the suburbs due to high rent.

    • @mattbalfe2983

      Very true, but downtown Silver Spring might be the best spot because its an actual city with metro access and lots of good options.

    • @chinaberg
      @chinaberg Před 2 lety +1

      @Steven Kelley You are referring to the new restaurants. Look at Chinatown. It is not really a Chinatown. And the best place for Vietnamese food and Middle Eastern food in the region is not even in DC but in Eden Center and Seminary Hill, respectively, in No VA.

    Um, the most common reason given for why half-smokes are called "half-smokes" is because they are only somewhat smoked, unlike fully-smoked sausages. It definitely doesn't have anything to do with cutting them in half or not.

    I grew up in the College Park Maryland area and worked in DC for Uncle Sam. Actually, your food choices are not great except for the crab cakes and seafood. How about empanadas and tamales instead of Pupusas? Many people, including Salvadorians, ordered tamales for Christmas. How about Pork BBQ like Red, Hot and Blue and other local joints? The hotdogs served in the vending carts in the tourist areas and Peruvian Chicken restaurants that are everywhere. The Ethiopian restaurants are great, especially their bread. The ice cream made by the University of Maryland Dairy.
