- A scene from 'The Right Stuff' (1983) in which Dennis Quaid has an unlikely encounter with a beautiful David Gulpilil and an Aboriginal clever man played by artist and activist Wandjuk Marika.

RIP David Gupilil now you are with the moon, the stars and the Milky Way.
I live half an hour away from the tracking station site in Muchea, Western Australia, where Cooper spoke to Glenn in orbit…
As someone who has had an extreme Out of Body Experience, saw the whole earth from space, this scene just makes the whole movie for me.
I think this scene adds so much to the movie and really resonates with me. I like Gordo's respectful acknowledgment of them by tipping his hat as they introduce themselves . Indigenous folk meet a modern astronaut. I also get the feeling Gordo feels a little uncomfortable as they ask him who he is. Brilliant.
Just watched it again last night. Marvelous. This scene and the firefly John Glenn scenes were among my favorites.
Dennis Quaid is brilliant in the Right Stuff, directed by Phil Kaufmann and featuring an ensemble cast including Ed Harris, Sam Shepard, and one of the greatest of all American actresses the legendary Kim Stanley.
This is a movie masterpiece
RIP David Gulpilil
Jennifer Lemming: I recently learned that it is not ok to use the name of someone who has passed after they passed. His family name is, I think OK to use and it is David Dalaithngu.
Love this movie to death, but I still have no idea why this scene is so deeply embedded in my head. I still say the line "He know the moon, he know the star, he know the milky way." to this day, and people are clueless as to what I'm on about.
+YouDummy You should listen to Biosphere's Microgravity. It samples that line.
Rest assured that there is at least one person out there who would get that line instantly.
I do exactly the same thing. Also quote Grissom's wife - "what do they expect me to do ? COOK?" to puzzled stares as well
I was reminded of this by Lao Tzu:
Tao Te Ching - Lao Tzu - chapter 47
Without going outside, you may know the whole world.
Without looking through the window, you may see the ways of heaven.
The farther you go, the less you know.
Thus the sage knows without travelling;
He sees without looking;
He works without doing.
Every time I smoke.
A lot of scenes in this movie probably never occurred, but what great story telling!
one of the best scenes in this film!
Davids words. I bring the movie to life.
this looking-around after "who are you?" - brilliant David G. :-))
"See that old bloke there?... He know."
An absolute gem of a movie - excels in every department
The movie flopped in 1983 which is a tragedy. Ebert listed as the best film that year and one the ten best films of the 80s. My dad worked for NASA and we lived close to Edwards AFB when the space shuttle was being built in nearby Palmdale. Jeff Goldblums description of Edwards was pretty close and I to pray I never go back
Beautiful scene.
I had the luck to open TV and see this scene. It still chill me up. Has a lot of meaning to me. I just smile to TV screen :D Don't remember to feel this with a movie. In my opinion, they wanted to give some mystery environment to the movie, with the touch of "ancient astronauts". Just love this.
Anyone else here after reading the chapter on “Magician” in the book “King Warrior Magician Lover” ?
Oh yeah brother. Great book. Great thoughts. Be a man.
Reading the chapter now, stopped just to find the scene.
Great scene and the payoff later is that you get the sense the old man did help everything turn out okay for John Glenn.
Wow look how young Dennis Quaid looks
When I teach physics and I get to the unit on celestial mechanics I tell the students that the ancients knew a whole lot more about astronomy than they do because they saw the full and bright night sky almost every night . No light pollution and they were often outdoors in the evening.
Then, I fire up a program like Stellarium and display the retrograde motion of the planets against the fixed stars and the structure of the Milky Way and they are often blown away. They have no idea what's above them every night.
Gone too soon, David.
This is the scene that i always remember of this movie, the asutralian chamán that know the Moon, the stars , and the milky way, for me this is true, those kind of man knows a fucking lot that que couldn't imagine
I love this movie. So, so much.
My all time favorite movie.
What people don’t realise is the amount of knowledge of the star charts Australian Aborigines had and used daily to navigate
The Australian Aboriginal culture is very underrated - they truly respect to live one with the Earth.
@@Hz-yl7du man we was white washed as kids I remember so much bulls crud that was said to us shameful absolutely disgusting
@@Uncle_Chuck - Shame you didn't create a written language to record your knowledge for everyone to partake in. How selfish.
Came here from BAD - Mr Walker says, now must watch this film.
One of my favorite scene in that movie ❤
Having seen 'The Dish' every scrap of help they could get would have been needed!
Great movie. They don't make movies like this anymore.
S2 Namastë!
coming here from 'king warrior magician lover' book.
In the next scene . One of the astronauts is flying over. And the director put the original audio of the astronaut saying he is seeing flames . Dancing flames. Beautiful he says.
This was a form of putting this extraterrestrial contact and the original audio bit not sayjg is extraterrestrial. The say who's making contact with him in the space is the aboriginal
Godspeed David.
