- I successfully treated mare's tail / horsetail using a common, everyday product. This weed is so invasive and can be difficult to get rid of in gardens.

cheers 👍
Thanks Nathan ivr been a gardener for over 15 years I've never heard that one so thanks mate
It kills it off but does come back the next year
I'll give it a try thanks 👍👍
Kurtail EVO is the weedkiller for it👍 good luck. Cheers 👍
might try this, love the vid, my kind of humour
Cheers 👍 there's some great ideas in the comments too👌
Nice One Nathan Thanks again
Cheers 👍 thanks for watching 👌
Interesting. Marestail is a very very useful and ancient plant.😊
It does have a lot of uses historically, like everything else that's classed as a weed it's just growing in the wrong place. Cheers 👍
My strategy is to accept that it exists, and pull it out in those areas I don't want it in such as planting beds. It's not that much of a hassle as long as I keep on top of it; pulling it out as deeply as possible in late spring and summer regularly until it's under control, then once a month from August onwards.
Nathan, mix glyphosate at twice full strength, put rubber gloves on & over the top of the gloves put an old woollen sock. Swish your hands in the glyphosate for a couple of seconds. It soaks the sock but doesn't touch your skin. Then crush the mares tail with your hand. The glyphosate immediately gets past the waxy leaf coating & starts to work. Works great & is ideal if marestail is amongst cultivated plants as the direct squeeze rather than broadcast spray targets the weed.
Sounds like a good way to get past that outer layer and target them individually 👍👌 cheers for watching
Great idea I use a small paint brush with net glyphosate.
I have a raised bed full of this. I want to take it back and garden in it, how long before the soil would be ok to grow in after all the treatments to rid the horsetail?
@@LewisgardenservicesLtd Nathan I have several small trees trying to grow in the small gap between the floor concrete and the garden wall, I keep cutting they back but the buggers grow again, I was thinking of trying to spray vinegar and salt to kill them, next time I cut them back, do you have any better ideas mate ?
Try drilling into the stumps and applying whatever you choose to use
Washing up liquid in the mix of roundup it also works on moss there is no sticking agent in roundup work's on most wax like weed's great video 👍👍
Always helps using a wetting agent 👍
Another quality funny video.
Cheers 👍 I look back and wonder why I thought that was funny 😅 Thanks for watching
You always make me laugh Nathan, it’s the dry sense of humour.
@alanbrown8296 thanks, it's too dry for most people 🤔😅
Hi Nathan. Enjoyed reading the comments to this video 👍 many useful ideas
Cheers 👍 there's a few ways to tackle it. Think Scott had the simplest tho on his vid😅
Diamond is a weedkiller for horsetail.
White spirits in your gallup mix dissolves through the waxy waterproof layer letting the glyphosate to soak into the plant and kill it.
Or strim and spray, but it is a temporary thing not permanent.
Wd40🤔 not heard that one👌👍
It's all about getting through that outer layer and there seems to be a few methods 👍
You legend! This stuff is the bane of my f*****g life!
It is a pain, kurtail EVO work and some other methods in the comments. Cheers 👍
Cause....this is Canada. ....and the silica in the horsetail makes them waterproof and they have limited leaf surface we injure them a bit with a hockey stick then apply a blend of glyphosate and one of our broadleaf herbicides with 24d with a brush or wiper like the Red Weeder. (Tm)
That's the way 👍 bash them around a bit and apply weedkiller. Thanks for watching 👌
I personally have found that thick bleach, the same that you put down your drain or toilet, dripped down the stem and around it's base clears them after a few days. Other than that Industrial strength bleach sprayed onto them also works.
Hypo and plants aren't the best of friends for sure🤔😬👍 cheers for watching
😂😂😂 Great vid Nathan, first time I've laughed today. Love the humour. On the serious topic, I've had success with Gallup glyphosate, mixed stronger than recommended. Did your guy recommend putting a cut off plastic bottle over the mares tail and spraying into the neck? I've done that to protect surrounding plants
Cheers 👍 glad I cheered you up👍 thanks for watching 👌
That sounds like an easy solution to make a cone to confine spray 👍
I’ve tried pushing a hole next to the weed with a screw driver and spraying into the hole. That works, Lime also good.
Was it diamond weed killer you used in the end and did it work?! I’m all for the environment but I want a pretty garden 😩
I used kurtail which works fine
I use a mix of Depitox (selective) and Gallup , seems to knock it back
👌 sounds ideal
horses tails have a coating you need to brake.i used soapy water spray them then throw salt on them, put salt round base.took a few week but they disintergrated like powder.
Yea they have need a good bashing before applying anything, I've heard salt does have some effect 🤔 cheers 👍
Fetel mix with diesel does ivy as well hangs on plant rather than run off
Diesel smells great too👌
You can make a tea from it and use it to protect against blight, it has many uses. If you had enough you could sell the tea to market gardeners as an organic product.
I'll need a second van and go into the herbal tea trade😅 Japanese knotweed tea too apparently? Thanks for watching 👍
It's a herb good for heart kidneys liver skin hair health it's a diuretic as well it's got multiple health benefits . This is crazy to get rid of it.
moderately toxic to Sheep, horses.
We were told to distress the mares tale or damage it or hit it to damage that wax like coating it's got then hit with roundup
Yea, run over them with a brush and apply👍 thanks for watching 👌
Top tip 👍
Cheers 👍
Horsetails can be considered living fossils. This group of plants is what is left of a group of plants that were as thick as forests and had relatives as big as trees that flourished during the Devonian period approximately 350 million years ago.
Yea it is👍 it came up a few times when I studied geology, it'll see us lot out that's for sure
I enjoyed this video, but please can you tell me how to get rid of Mez tail when it is among my flowers, my prize begonias? thank you
Try painting kurtail weedkiller on them carefully with a brush, will take some time but good luck👍
D up with washing up liquid to break the silicone like skin on the mares tail and it really works
Always needs a bit a fairy liquid 👍
strong round up, hit a couple times.
100%in all ways👌
I think mares tail and horse tail are different, but we have had acres? of it. I obsessed and pulled and pulled it out. Last year a bunch of it grew & and we didn't deal with it. It died and is still standing, about 3 to 5 ft. I walked today by it and pulled gently, and the whole plant with roots came up easily. So I have a bundle of dried mares tail. I imagine seeds are all over the place. That stuff nearly made me suicidal the first year. I feel better now. 😊
It's a nightmare, I've the proper weedkiller for it now. Just thought this would be fun plus I love the smell of WD40😅 thanks for watching
If you pull it up it grows even more shoots underground. It’s akin to Japanese knot weed. A total pest. It’s everywhere too. I have it in my garden and even when it looks dead it’s still green when you snap it. Proper bastad thing.
@@LewisgardenservicesLtdwhat is the proper weedkiller?
Ammonium sulphamate. With washing up liquid and water apparently is best .
Kurtail killed my lawn wherever I sprayed as well as all the ground cover in my borders and now a whole load of new horsetail plants emerged even though I had covered the surrounding area when I was spraying! So be very careful as you could be making a bad situation worse… I have had to go back to pulling by hand!
I don't think it's selective so will do that and takes a few seasons treatment usually to hit it back.
Ammonium sulfate added to glyphosate gives it a bit more kick. I've heard of people accidentally spilling red diesel and discovering weed killing properties. Allegedly.
Haven't heard of that one but yes diesel is not too friendly to the ground or plants😬
Was the egg / salt thing a joke ?? I often wonder abount salt lol am I low due to always gardening 24/7
Do you focus on a good salt top up like that or was it a joke lol ?
Slightly too much for the camera but when it's hot and I've been grafting I'm always craving crisps and salty food, surprising how much you loose 👍
This is best done just as it is starting to show.
We used a cheap as hell (Tesco) lemon dish soap, basically anything that cuts through grease.
Don't use any medicated dish soaps or any that are moisturising... You want it cheap and nasty so it strips the oily/waxy layers from the plant and doesn't apply another oily layer.
Mix your roundup at 1.5x the normal strength and then AFTER all the shaking and mixing has been done, gently stir in about a 20:1 mix of that dish soap. DO NOT MAKE BUBBLES!!!!
You may need to reapply 3 months later.
We did graveyards with quite good results. Not perfect, but better than just roundup.
Another trick is to strim the tops off and THEN apply it... But that means you have to wait for it to grow first.
It's a pain🙄 sprayed kurtail on a site a month ago. Went back today all dead 👌
@@LewisgardenservicesLtd but kurtail is so expensive... Or it was when we were looking at it.
About £80 per litre?
That can get bloody expensive after a while!
Put diesel in a hand sprayer spray on the weed and it will die used it down the allotement and it works if you have plants near put a tube over the weed and spray in the tube it works every time.
That'll do it, ivy too👍 plus everything smells beautiful afterwards 😅
Does it include wallpaper paste ?
We have a winner, it definitely does😅
Is the adjuvant washing up liquid?
That always help with the application 👍
Kindly advise the best way to get rid of horsetail. It is driving me crazy in my garage
Kurtail Evo is the best option to treat next year when it comes back up
I was in a rented house for 3 years that had mares tail rife throughout the garden, all between paving slabs and growing up through paths and steps.... I was getting through 5 litres of WD40 per month to kill it off.
IT ALWAYS COMES BACK.
Good luck to anyone fighting this week....you'll need it.
Glad someone did a long term test on it😅👍 I'll keep using it on everything else tho😂
That’s a lot of WD40 that eventually goes to ground water…
It did seem a lot 😬
is oil good for the ground ?
Not entirely sure, it does come from the ground.
“Over millions of years it’s become resilient to weedkiller” 😂😂
It sure has🤣🤣
Did it ever grow back?
There was regrowth this year until I used the proper weedkiller on it, guess that's the easiest way. Cheers 👍
Horsetail absolutely hate the stuff! I was asked to tidy a garden and cut the grass a while back... Lets just say I had to ask them where the grass was 🤦🏾♂️ yeah I turned that job down 😂
It can take over gardens and lawns in just a few seasons, it's everywhere in my area unfortunately 🙄
It can take over gardens and lawns in just a few seasons, it's everywhere in my area unfortunately 🙄
evening Nathan apparently white vinger works on meres tale
Hi 👍 great on your chips too👌
@@LewisgardenservicesLtd 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Spill the beans on the secondary option don't think the local. DIY center will have enough wd40
Sure it's in the comments now but roundup mixed into cheap wallpaper paste instead of water, bruise the stems of the plant and apply the paste, tape the area off to prevent transfer. Buy kurtail EVO is less time consuming tho
Hey I wanna know what gets rid of it I have a customer who’s has it
Easier way, buy the right stuff. Roundup way, mix it with cheap wallpaper paste instead of water, bruise the plant with a brush to breakdown stem coating and brush on paste. Area will need to be protected to stop and manual transfer to other areas, cheers 👍
He's finally told us! Thank you. I'm off to wilkos to get some wall paper paste!😊
@@adamcaldecott5846 thought someone had said it in the comments, good luck with the decorating 🤣
Do you hang the paper vertically or horizontal?
I wish I find pulling the mare's tail straight up with not to much force applied gets it all out Otherwise the boss just uses GALOP that stuff kills everything
Does it work on neighbours? 😅
@@LewisgardenservicesLtd I wish it would work on mine 😁
I've had horsetail tea before! It's actually got a load of health benefits funnily enough! Feel free to just munch it as you go 👍🏻😂
I think it might beat some of my grub😅
@@LewisgardenservicesLtd lovely horsetail salad for lunch??
Course it has also it's great for skin hair and kidneys liver heart and so many other things to. Tastes lush. This is crazy to get rid of it. Mind you people are un educated think most plants are weeds . This is actually a herb.
The trouble with my garden is that the horsetail grows all over and around my plants and flowers. I don't know what else to do, though. 😕
Are you happy to use weedkiller?
@LewisgardenservicesLtd it didn't work, though .
@alexsandrapuzanov1007 try mixing weedkiller with wallpaper paste rather than water to make a gel, bruise the plants without snapping them and apply the gel individually to the plants and keep pets etc away until dry or use kurtail EVO
@LewisgardenservicesLtd Thank you very much for your help. 😊
I have the same problem, it grows between plants. How do you bruise the marestail? (If that's not a silly question!) Do you mean just crush them kinda thing!? 😀 thanks very much 🙏😊
If you ever need to survive an apoc level event the tools you'll need is WD-40 and ducttape.
And zip ties 😅
Kurtail worked for me last year
Yea bought a load for this this year, WD40 smells just too good tho😅
White vinegar does the same in less time
Sounds ideal👍👍
I can see it killing top top by sealing up the cells so it can't breath. I'd be sure there's nothing systemic about it.
I'd try damaging it and 50/50 glyphosate, there's nothing I've found that it won't kill yet!
It's a pain😬
Thing is, I have it in the darn greenhouse.
😬 kurtail weedkiller possibly
I am so sorry
Horse tail can be toxic to your dogs… Our springer spaniel just ate some horse tail I didn’t know we had around the corner by the barn. Upset stomach vomit diarrhea and a trip to the vet. And two hours later we pulled up as much as we could. Thank you for the tip I can’t wait to make sure the stuff doesn’t grow back
Glad you're dog was ok, always a worry but at least you know what the cause was. Cheers
No your dog must got sick from something you gave it cos Horsetail has anti-inflammatory properties. It is also useful as an astringent and as a diuretic, meaning it is a useful herb for any dog suffering from urinary tract problems. The plant is exceptionally rich in silicon, the matrix for the formation of connective tissue, bone cartilage and skin.
Clearly you blamed it on the horse tail but your dog like many dogs cats eat certain grasses when their unwell . He must ate it to relive his already belly ache. Before you tell people it's toxic Gey your facts right
And vets make money of people.
Be careful what you feed your dog at home.
Hi Lewis, I have a large amount Mare's tail in a plantar, that I hope to one day grow and eat from.
I'm concerned if I use any of the products (round up or anything else) to kill the Mare's tail that the soil won't be safe for me to eat any of the produce that I will (hopefully) grow from the plantar.
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Chris
Hi, the weedkiller used to treat is systemic and should not leave any residue in the ground. Follow the application rate on the suitable weedkiller for mares tail. It may however take a few seasons to clear. Good luck 🤞 cheers 👍
Went to the garage, filled up a jerry can for £8 with Diesel.. did the job.. all turned black and died within a week.. ( it still pops up in other places)
I love diesel 👌❤️😅
It'll be back next year. Don't bother. The only way to get rid of it is to dig it all out, constantly
Have had some good success with the right weedkiller. Cheers
Ok, i think i have a process that may work on this obnoxious weed.
1 - clear as much of the green top layer off as possible using a stirrup hoe. Discard them in a plastic bag and seal tightly.
2- use a pitchfork to dig down 6 to 8 inches and break up the soil thoroughly.
3- mix a double strength weed killer solution that contains 2-4-D and saturate the ground. Let stand for a week or two and then repeat this step in its entirety.
4- horsetail has a deep tuber that is hard to grt to, so use a Ross brand tree root feeder to inject more 2-4-D into ground to attack the tuber.
So far it looks like I have been successful and will follow up again after the 4th of July.
Sounds like you've a plan👍
following!
Ok. My method appears to be working pretty well. I found two small clumps of the weed. One was a torn up straggler from the pitchfork step. The other was a runner that worked its way up beneath a rock that popped up. I spot treated both areas and have not seen anything since.
Two closing points.
1. The 2-4-D appearss to have sterilized my entire planter except for my magnolia tree.
2. Ill continue moitoring, but won't plan on replanting it again till next spring. By then all the 2-4-D should be flushed out. I'll add more compost and manure to refresh the soil.
Might upset the vegans but Petrol will kill it dead ... I save my old stale fuel and that works a treat .
Chuck a match to it and it's an instant solution😅
Mares tail is a separate weed in the Pacific Northwest.
The one is alot bigger?
Ìts certainly a 'mare!
Sure is😬😅
get some kurtail, its expensive but works
Have seen it used with good success 👌
Kurtail is the easiest, yes it’s expensive but it works and you only have to spray it on.
Boiling water great quick killer
Think that's a go to for a few things with some of my customers...the expensive weedkiller will be cheaper than boiling the kettle soon🙄
My garden has it obviously its only a quick temporary fix but done repeatedly it helps
The problem is WD40 is not cheap
It's not unfortunately 👍
Wel I'm of to get WD 40
😅 everything getting a spray😬
@@LewisgardenservicesLtd ooohhh. Yes 👍✋
@@LewisgardenservicesLtd il let you no how I get on have a great weekend
Cheers 🍻 you too
@@LewisgardenservicesLtd after being in hospital just tried the WD40 on horse hair weed first day it's starting to work it's dying. thanks for a great idea it was driving me crazy thanks so much
Just so you know, I don't know, I know that you know and if you tell me I'll know but until then, I guess it's on a who needs to know basis, ah who knows? Well you know............ 😂👍🏼
😅 there's a few ways but bruising the stems to break down outer coating helps
I have this obnoxious weed in one of my planters. I'm pretty sure i have a way to kill it off and will report back in a day or so.
Todays date is may 11, 2023
Good luck
Thanks pal didn’t know WD 40 worked on elbows 🤣👍 I use elbow grease.🤣👍…..anyway nightmare tail.🥲🙁
You make actually need to put in your coffee for the joints😅🤔 I ended up just buying the proper weedkiller. Cheers 👍
Gallup weed killer pure not diluted, Use a artist’s paint brush and carefully brush the stem and the soil at the root, brush the leafs, do it again three days later it will feed the rest of the root and new growth to kill it, don’t cut it because it will spread. Another trick put a small cut in it to feed the Gallup to the stem, it’s a very glossy weed and hard to soak the weed killer in, Check your neighbour’s garden to make sure it’s not coming from there garden. It’s a lot cheaper than spraying if you can control it or stop it completely. It’s been around since the dinosaurs.🥲
Sounds ideal 👍 it's definitely been around a while. Cheers for the comment 👍
I'm experimenting with laundry powder. sprinkle it on the weeds and either water in or wait till it rains. Works well for normal weeds. Try it.
Great for moss too👍
Hi. I don't know what will kill it. Neat glysophate and wallpaper paste didn't work. WD40 only gets the top... Love to know the off record way
Wallpaper paste and glyphosphate is the way, you need to bruise all the plants first to break their coating
