    I read Little House on the Prairie to my third grade class a few years back bc we were going to pioneer school but we analyzed it in a way where the families sentiments were wrong and we had a discussion on racism and the way natives were treated in that time period and today. We did similar discussions during black history month, latinx history month, aapi heritage month and 9/11. Personally, I think my class grew a lot through these discussions and were incredibly compassionate and had some deep convos around it.
    Brutal parts of our history get swept under the rug in our curriculum all the time and I actually think books like Little House on the Prairie can be a good bridge between giving them content at their level and extending it to have a deeper meaning and correcting wrongs.

  • @kaylarghh
    @kaylarghh Před 2 lety +77

    I guess the reason that the Little House on the Prairie books didn't quite come full circle and have the family realising they were wrong etc. is because they're autobiographical so I guess if her family didn't learn that lesson in real life then she didn't include it in the books - which is such a shame! I've never actually read them but my sister was named Laura because my mum loved the books and TV show (she also named me Kayla after the character on Days of our Lives HA!) and it's so funny to me because my sister is extremely passionate about anti-racism (as we all should be)!

    • @sarah-jk7px
      @sarah-jk7px Před 2 lety +16

      Also there is a book before Little House on the Prairie and there are like 7 after if I remember correctly? I’m trying to remember from when I read them as a kid, but I feel like by the end of the series Laura is more outspoken. But the reality is her parents were racist and she documented the truth of her childhood which is sad

      Yeah Laura herself learns and grows a lot which is probably why she ended up writing about her life. I actually really enjoyed the books as a kid, though I'm sure they don't hold up, and the show was my favorite (definitely tried to be less racist at least)

    I really loved this video. Your mom is a gem. My heart goes out to you, and your family. I am so sorry.
    I don’t have a good relationship with my parents. My mother is abusive and my father was complacent in that abuse and while I know my mother did like things, she didn’t share those things. BUT, what I have tried to do is be more open in sharing my interests with my kids. I turned 37 this year and my oldest child is almost 18. So much of our life has been shaped by that openness. We have a pretty strong familial identity outside of our own, stark differences. And I see that with you and your mom, and even with you and Robbie and Liam. It’s so special. I’m so glad you used books as a vessel for showing what family can be. The books I have passed down and my kids would say are “Mom’s Faves” would be; Interview with the Vampire, The Lord of the Rings, and their films - always.
    In less heavy news… I hope you do read the original Dune trilogy. I am definitely doing that. I don’t own a physical copy of Dune Messiah - and the copy I want is like $40, so in the mean time I think I’ll do the audio book, it’s only like 9 hours! I hope if you read it (and if I do) it’s just as good as Dune!

    I read Little House on the Prairie all of my childhood (I'm currently 14). I will always have a deep love for this series, and for the comfort it brings me. I am a Christian, as is my family, and I can honestly say reading those books as a child helped me love others more compared to feeling the need to be rude to other groups of people. Those books brought me so much peace as a child, and the dream of living in the middle of no where on a homestead still lives strong. I understand people's issues with it - and I think while those things are not okay and discriminating, people writing that sort of thing back then thought it was normal (which is really sad). Those books are an autobiography, and like another comment said, they probably didn't come full circle because not everything in life does in a perfect way that will please everyone. But as a young impressionable child, I had already understood the need to love everyone despite disagreeing with them, and reading about the way people back then treated other races and or groups of people didn't negatively affect my mindset on racism and inclusivity. Just wanted to share my own experience with those books.

    I'm so sorry to hear about your dad, sending you and family so much love. You and your mam are a pillar of strength, he's very lucky to have people like you. I loved this vlog like always, and I'm so intrigued that you loved Dune so much. It's definitely one I want to read. I got it for my partner recently so a great time to steal it and read it myself haha.

    I’m so sorry about your dad. I can definitely relate as my dad also had a stroke that has significantly changed his life (and my mom’s) in April 2020. Thinking of you!

    Sending you and your family good vibes Kayla. Stokes are so tricky because you never know when they can happen and sometimes the signs aren't universal for all strokes but it's good to hear that your dad is home surrounded by family. I've gone through the same thing and that time seems like the toughest so just take it day by day. 💜💜💜

    I am so sorry for what you, your father and your family are going through - my own father passed from a stroke when I was sixteen and I can only imagine what it feels like to see the aftereffects in this way that you all are. You are all my thoughts and in my heart

    My dad had a stroke in April. Sounds like our dads are similar. A lot of my dad’s personality was being outside in nature. It has been tough, but I just have to keep reminding myself that different dad is better than no dad. He still has so much to offer, and I can still learn so much from him. Hang in there! Thanks for all the fun book material!

    I wish I could reach out and give you a big hug! My dad's suffered multiple heart attacks over the years, and it's hard watching him not be able to do things that he used to be able to do, and I still get super panicky every time he gets a cold. Lots of love to your dad and your family ❤️❤️

    My mom has a collection of Trixie Belden books (I think around 30-40 of them) and since she grew up with them, I also read them as a kid and they're one of the books I remember reading in like 3rd or 4th grade. It's really cool to see someone else acknowledge them. I've never seen them get talked about before, it's always either Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys.

  • @kerisbookishcorner2864

    First, I loved watching you and your mom talk together about the books and things-it was so fun and enjoyable!!
    Second, I k ow I’m watching this later than it happened but I’m so sorry to hear about your dad-and this was the perfect time for me to watch because my mom had a hemorrhagic stroke in July about a month ago and it’s been just hard to process because like your dad she has always been very active and couldn’t be found sitting still long at all; and now she’s in recovery/therapy to relearn basic life functions. I don’t know why but for some reason hearing you briefly talk about that made me feel like another person outside my family understands. I’m sorry, and thank you for sharing that with us.
