I was wrong about rally points. The original game doesn't have them, but Crusader DOES. They're aligned to number keys for the unit, and not a traditional click like I expected so I missed them.

These games are personal to me. When I was a child I would sit in a wooden chair next to my father, watching him play both Stronghold I and Crusader. It was really the most exciting part of my days, waiting for him to get off work to come home and play Stronghold. I have strong associations with almost everything about these games because of that. A couple of months ago, my father was killed by a drunk driver and I wish more than anything I could go back to one of those nights and experience it just one more time. I miss the happiness and ease of life I experienced in those days.

He still played them with me. IMO a dad who plays video games with their kids (or really any parent or any kind of game) is something to be encouraged. A very touching and beautiful story.

The thing that I love the most about Stronghold Crusader are the AI‘s. Every enemy has his own personality and building style, his play style is also fitting to his personality.
For example The Caliph is a aggressive phyromanic motherf+cker. So he does use a lot of fire slaves, fire balistas and horse archers. For defense he does use high towers (for more range) and fire traps.
I never fund another game with such an AI.

People like LegendOfTotalWar and Kerkovich have great channels and info but they're so super-in-depth on the single player and multiplayer metas (respectively) that they have complaints and praise which, while completely valid, just don't apply to me. The other one would be my magnus opus: a Black Isle style RPG with full voice acting where every character was Brian Blessed SHOUTING except for one: Minsc would appear in the intro with his original voice actor, and then he would get possessed and as Brian Blessed shouted from his larynx he would die from the pure power of the man who should have voiced him initially, and Boo would slowly chew his corpse before a fade to black and you wake up in Candlekeep.

Instead you lay out your blueprint and artisans start building while you defend them with your military and insure that there is enough supplies. Honestly, it's suprising how well these games aged visually and gameplay wise. They just play so nice and fluid, everything kinda explains itself well, there are no major UI or control issues, even lack of A-move isn't that big of a deal. And the visuals... backed with that soundtrack - 10/10.
Also, interesting note: this game was EXTREEEMELY popular in Poland - back then not many people spoke or read english (in PL), and this game came out with full PL voice acting - and believe me, it was as good, if not better than the original. I kinda miss those times - full PL voice acting in games was rare, but done VERY well, with professional voice actors and with people that cared. Nowadays... quantity went up significantly, quality though... one of the Battlefield games in recent years was voice acted by youtubers - it was really, really bad idea...

I remember falling asleep so many nights at my dads house in the country to crusader music playing quietly from my computer in the corner of my bedroom when I was growing up, a lot of summers spent building the most impressive castle and village I could.
There never was enough time, though.
That was a long time ago, but whenever I open up Crusader, which I'll always keep a copy of no matter how old it gets, it feels like I was back at my dads just a few days ago.

Ullrich Pfeiffer God I feel so ripped off. My friends only played empire earth and age of empires 2, with a sprinkling of battle for middle earth and age of mythology. I’ve always been bad st those fast twitch RTS games (still can’t get into AOE2) but I love these slower paced more economy based RTS games like settlers.
This seems so perfect for me. Would have lead me to discover Things like Anno and dungeon master earlier.
