- Curious to know if my big plan to get a discounted cruise to Alaska worked? Find out here!
Holland America’s Standby Rate program has changed since we booked it a few months ago. It’s now US $99pp/day for an Inside or Oceanview cabin and US $129pp/day for a Balcony cabin (plus taxes). You still pay at the time of joining the Standby Program and won’t find out until between 2-7 days prior to departure. After that, you can remain on the standby list and will be told for certain at least 2 hours prior to departure & still try to get on OR you can just cancel the cruise and you will receive a full refund.
It’s tricky & there’s a LOT of stress involved, and it’s a bit of a savings but not tons compared to the amount of stress you’ll endure.
Would I do it again? Probably not, but if I did, I’d book it for the beginning or end of the season, to get a better chance of actually getting onboard.

We did the Alaska cruise over 20 years ago out of Vancouver on Holland America Everything was first class and amazing Too bad you didnt get to go but its definitely an awesome cruise
Hi Howard! Yes, unfortunate to have not gotten on - when we cruised to Alaska before, it was on Holland America and I was really looking forward to their fancy Caesar drinks with a massive olive and king prawn! Next time!

@@BrandonEdwards-uc6qb hi Brandon! Wow which sailing are you booked on? It seems like a crazy option this year - last year, way less cruise bookings so it probably would have been fine but this year is the year to cruise apparently. My fingers are crossed for you!!
@@ChristineTurner I am booked on the Westerdam, sailing from SEA on July 21st. Fingers crossed. I plan on going down to the port and waiting 90 minutes prior if I’m not cleared two days prior. I have already mentally prepared myself that 7 days prior is not realistic based off the many reviews I’ve read.
